  • Superb Summer Reading List
Superb Summer Reading List This is it! The Sixth Annual Bethel Superb Summer Reading List. I hope this list makes your summer just that much more entertaining, relaxing, and enjoyable! Remember each of these books was read and recommended by a fellow Bethelite! Teachers, custodians, EA’s, administrators, librarians, secretaries, and more contributed. The variety is wide and the entries are not in any particular order, but the descriptions themselves can be pretty entertaining! The last page is the tear off "glove box" version of the list. This is the one to mark your favorites on as you read the descriptions. Leave it in your car so as you go to the library or bookstore it is always at the ready. Have fun! And, remember make a note of any great books you read in the coming year so we can update the list for next summer! Since we became an OBOB (Oregon Battle Of the Books) district, I went ahead and added the 2012-13 OBOB books to the end of the list as well. I know I need to read ahead on those! Note to contributors…I took license with my editing. If something came out wrong I apologize in advance and take full responsibility! The opinions expressed in this may not be those of their owner…but hopefully they are close! Another note…anything within [] is definitely my opinion and can be ignored completely. 1 Bethel’s Superb Summer Reading List | 2012 Edition Kristi [email protected] With the Bethel Family Since 1999 Oster Currently a Teacher @ Cascade Title: The No.

Many think of 1776 as the defining year of American history, when we became a nation devoted to the pursuit of happiness through self- government. In Unfamiliar Fishes, Sarah Vowell argues that 1898 might be a year just as defining, when, in an orgy of imperialism, the United States annexed Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and Guam, and invaded first Cuba, then the Philippines, becoming an international superpower practically overnight. Among the developments in these outposts of 1898, Vowell considers the Americanization of Hawaii the most intriguing. • The Controversy Behind US Federal Recognition of Native Hawaiians
G o u v e i a | 1 Paradise Lost: the Controversy behind US Federal Recognition of Native Hawaiians “Grandson, all of this land someday will not be yours. That’s the reality of federal recognition. Someday, none of this will be yours. Welcome to America.” - The Late Russell Means of the Oglala Sioux Nation Photo Taken by Brieanah Gouveia G o u v e i a | 2 Paradise Lost: the Controversy Behind US Federal Recognition of Native Hawaiians Brieanah Ka´ohinani Wylde Gouveia Henry Fowler Policy Paper Competition Since the overthrow of Hawai´i’s last reigning monarch, Queen Lili´uokalani, in 1893, there has been no formal government-to-government relationship between a unified Native Hawaiian political organization and the United States government. However, on September 23, 2016, the Department of the Interior’s Office of the Secretary passed a final ruling outlining the administrative process for Hawaiians to form their own government body, if they so choose.1 Part of the DOI’s motivation for condoning Native Hawaiian federal recognition and self-governance, after more than a century, is to improve the US’s ability to fulfil its trust responsibilities to this indigenous group, set forth in legislation such as the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act of 1921 and the Hawai´i Statehood Admissions Act of 1959.2 Should the Hawaiian community organize and establish such a government, it would make them eligible for similar political and legal status, immunity and benefits as are granted to the roughly 566 federally recognized Native American and Alaskan tribes today.3 This is particularly important to evade constitutional challenges based on racial discrimination that have been made against benefits and programs created solely for Native Hawaiians.

Her talk of early missionaries and trips to the islands have a great deal of warmth to them. Author Sarah Vowell gives an overview of the history of Hawaii by focusing on the introduction of New England missionaries to the islands, and the subsequent impact of their arrival. This book, sadly, made me a bit embarrassed to be an American. This is a good book, but not a great book. Mar 01, martha rated it liked it Shelves: nonfiction , year But overall, a good experience. Everything is interconnected. Vowell has a great way of knocking the higher goals of historical figures - she cuts through the hyposcrisy really well - and at the same time elevating the intentions of these very human people. Very slight bump to heel of spine, else a tight fine copy in a fine unflawed dust jacket which is now protected in an archival cover. Ugh, white people. Unfamiliar Fishes. I've always meant to read Vowell, and never have, so Unfamiliar Fishes provided an opportunity to kill two Hawaiian nene geese with one lava rock: learn history, read Vowell.

  • Nature, Culture, and Hawaiʻi's Sugarcane
PLANTER’S PARADISE: NATURE, CULTURE, AND HAWAIʻI’S SUGARCANE PLANTATIONS A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY by Lawrence Helfgott Kessler May 2016 Examining Committee Members: Andrew Isenberg, Advisory Chair, Department of History Beth Bailey, University of Kansas Petra Goedde, Department of History Richard Immerman, Department of History John McNeill, External Member, Georgetown University © Copyright 2016 by Lawrence Helfgott Kessler _____________ All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT Over the course of the nineteenth century, the Hawaiian sugar industry rose from economic insignificance to become one of the world’s most efficient and productive sugarcane plantation systems. "Planter's Paradise" traces the transnational environmental history of cane planting in Hawaiʻi, from Polynesian settlement to the early twentieth century, to explore how an export-based mono-culture plantation system eclipsed diversified farming, how cultural encounters between indigenous and Euro-American groups influenced agriculture and natural resource use, and how the politics of planting contributed to the rise of American hegemony over the islands. With research grounded in plantation records, agricultural association publications, popular media, and personal correspondence, I address sugarcane planting as a point where ideas about nature, methods of converting nature into commodities for consumption in distant markets, and nature itself influenced each other within the context of U.S. imperial expansion. I argue that the ascendance of Hawaiʻi’s sugar industry was the result of cultural encounters, economic relations, and environmental conditions at the local level, but cane planting also connected the archipelago to particular transnational networks of economic, ecological, and cultural exchange.
