  • MANDOLIN ORANGE – Short
MANDOLIN ORANGE – Short Mandolin Orange makes music that WNYC describes as being “laced with bluegrass, country and folk…often wistful and contemplative without being somber, and always firmly grounded in the South.” The duo, comprised of Andrew Marlin and Emily Frantz, have just announced the May 5 release of Such Jubilee , their second studio album for Yep Roc Records. The group’s 2013 debut for Yep Roc, This Side of Jordan , was released to critical acclaim which included coverage from American Songwriter, Magnet and a coveted year-end spot on NPR’s list of Top 10 Folk & Americana Releases. In 2014 the duo played sold-out shows across the country alongside many festivals, including Merlefest, Newport Folk Festival and Pickathon. MANDOLIN ORANGE - Medium After the breakout critical success of Mandolin Orange's 2013 Yep Roc debut, This Side of Jordan , you'd be forgiven for expecting the classic "road record." Instead, the North Carolina duo of Andrew Marlin and Emily Frantz have crafted Such Jubilee , a gorgeous, deeply moving about album about home. "When you're gone so much, you start realizing what you have and what's waiting for you," explains Marlin. "You realize this there's place to come back to at the end of the journey. The road has been good to Mandolin Orange since releasing This Side of Jordan . NPR called the album "effortless and beautiful," naming it one of the year's best folk/Americana releases, while Magnet dubbed it "magnificent." It earned them performances everywhere from the iconic Newport Folk Festival to Pickathon, as well as tours with Willie Watson, Gregory Alan Isakov, The Wood Brothers, and more.

  • 2018 Delfest Program
WELCOME! Hi folks, Thanks for joining us for DelFest 11. We are glad you are here. While we showcase many types of music here at DelFest, most of it has its roots in Bluegrass, and for this year’s festival we’re shining a big spotlight on Bluegrass, especially with the Bluegrass Congress on Saturday night. The gentlemen we have gathered for that set have made as big a mark on the music as anyone. They’ve taken the music that Bill Monroe created to new levels on their respective instruments. I’m very excited to get to share the stage with all of these friends – Dawg, Ricky, Jerry, Sam, Bryan and Stuart – for a night that I know I won’t soon forget. This focus on picking and bluegrass continues with sets from many of the top bluegrass touring bands on the road like Greensky Bluegrass and Old Crow Medicine Show, as well as the next generation of great pickers that are taking up the mantle, like Billy Strings and Sierra Hull, as well as a host of young bands that are creating some excitement. As usual, there will be a little something for everyone at this year’s DelFest, but I hope you look back on it when it’s all said and done, and say, “We might have just witnessed the world’s best and biggest picking party.” Most of you know what DelFest is about, but I’ll dare repeat it here for any newbies. We are all family, we love one another, we love music, and we are here to have a good time with each other.

  • Sierra Hull Episode Transcript
VOICES IN THE HALL SIERRA HULL EPISODE TRANSCRIPT PETER COOPER Welcome to Voices in the Hall, presented by the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. I’m Peter Cooper. Today’s guest, is singer, songwriter, and mandolin virtuoso Sierra Hull. SIERRA HULL I carry my mandolin with me. Some lady says, “What kind of music do you play?” and I said, “You know I grew up playing Bluegrass.” So she says, “I just love Bluegrass music,” but she didn’t know what the mandolin was. Well then when she thinks of Bluegrass music, I wonder what she thinks of. When I was about eight years old I decided I wanted to play something. And I would see my heroes and think, someday I want to do what they’re doing. I want to make albums, I want to tour, I want to… I wanted to be just like those people that I admired. Well I’ve been really fortunate. A lot of the people that I have loved and admired the most have been some of the sweetest most encouraging people to me. I was super vulnerable, was definitely not sure about sharing some of these songs or what people would think. Maybe they weren’t even any good. You know you have all this self doubt and things that go in when you’re really trying to share something close to you like that. If there are little girls out there somewhere that are inspired by what I’m doing, I’m so flattered by that. And that’s a really special thing to me because I certainly know what it’s like to be that little girl.
