Where the Heart Is for More Projects More for Interiordesign.Net/Residentialleaders15 RESIDENTIALleaders where the heart is The first Residential Leaders survey takes us home We pride ourselves, here at Interior Design, not just on the broadest possible coverage of the design world but also on our ever deepening knowledge of specific sectors. Each year, we collect and curate data to form clear pictures of business trends for our top 100 Giants firms, the Rising Giants just behind, and the Giants in hospitality and health care. Now we are focusing on the firms working in the blooming residential sector. Over the course of several months, we carefully developed our questions for Interior Design’s first business survey of Residential Leaders. Then we sent them out with high hopes. We weren’t disappointed by the results. Nearly 200 firms— massive entities, individual practitioners, and everything in between—responded with detailed information about their business operations. Because of the diversity of the respondents, we chose to present our list alphabetically rather than by size or work vol- ume. The information we’ve collected serves as a terrific win- dow onto the residential landscape. Everybody loves a good view! We hope you find it as intriguing and enlightening as we have. However, as committed overachievers, we’re already thinking about how to expand and enhance the survey for 2016. A model apartment by If you don’t see your firm in these listings, please let us know. INTERNI offers the international Design community that meets in Milan during the FuoriSalone® the event GREEN ENERGY DESIGN, to focus on the creative processes of a series of Italian and international design talents, through projects characterized by a highly experimental, multimedia approach, capable of transmitting design culture and expression to the city as a whole, conveying a sense of the ferment of ideas and creativity found in the worlds of design and architecture, in the area of increasingly timely themes like the relationship between the environment and new design expressions. Sustainability, bio-construction, ecological architecture. There are many ways to describe what, at this point, is an obligatory path to follow in the world of construction and production of useful objects: the design of responsibility. The idea is to respond to a demand advanced by society: to live in more healthful buildings and less polluted cities, to develop an environmental policy of reuse and recycling of both objects and places, in a general process of protection of the territory. Needs that join the more pragmatic and alarming factors of the depletion of traditional energy supplies and the increasingly high costs of energy.

One of the goals of the center is to expose both children and adults to the benefits of sustainable green design and architecture, and to raise awareness about energy conservation. The building is a teaching tool, where green building strategies are expressed clearly and energy efficient systems are left exposed as educational opportunities. MATERIALS The design incorporates recycled and green materials throughout. Its striated rammed earth walls are comprised of cement, earth from local mountains, and crushed brick recycled from site demolition. Rammed earth construction results in durable walls that slow the transmission of heat and sound. The 18-inch thick walls absorb heat during the day and release heat as ambient temperatures cool. Each classroom’s nap area is lined with rammed earth, reducing echo and naturally regulating temperature where the children are most sensitive to noise and thermal fluctuations. Lowering the embodied energy of the materials was a priority. In addition to the rammed earth walls, the Center utilizes a palette of sustainable materials throughout, RAMMED EARTH WALL 2 including composite wood fencing, low VOC paints and adhesives, particle board and recycled paper countertops ABOUT MARMOL RADZINER with no added urea-formaldehyde, and CRI Green Label To limit its carbon footprint, the Center encourages alternative Since its inception in 1989, the Los Angeles-based firm Plus Certified Carpet Tiles.

LIVING IN SCOTTSDALE home design From top: Situated on 5 acres in Scottsdale, this two-story home blends into the desert environs; natural light bathes the kitchen, outfitted with white MODERN oak cabinetry. NATURE When Marmol Radziner designs for the Sonoran Desert, magic ensues. By Riki Altman-Yee // Photography by Bill Timmerman “Our goal was to make it feel like this house grew out of the natural landscape,” explains Ron Radziner, one of the architects behind a 5,000-square-foot oasis recently realized in the Sonoran Desert. Commissioned by a Midwestern couple, the project was the first Los Angeles-based design-build firm Marmol Radziner (marmol-radziner.com) completed in the Grand Canyon State. The firm is known for its award-winning modern designs, including the notable, sensitive renovation of the iconic Kaufmann Desert House in Palm Springs, Calif., designed by modernist Richard Neutra in 1946. The home’s original owner, Edgar J. Kaufmann, commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to build Fallingwater 10 years prior. Though arid environs were nothing new to Marmol Radziner, this particular build also came with specific directives from the owners. “They wanted a home that would preserve the incredible views,” Radziner recalls, “and they wanted something simple and elegant that would blend seamlessly into the desert terrain.” continued… 88 INTERIORS FALL/WINTER 2017 | MODERNLUXURY.COM LIVING IN SCOTTSDALE home design From left: Marmol Radziner varied the home’s elevations to provide seamless sight lines. • Marmol Radziner Launches White Brass Jewelry
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE OCTOBER 28, 2015 Marmol Radziner Launches White Brass Jewelry New white brass cuffs shown with Marmol Radziner’s classic light brass cuffs. Los Angeles – Marmol Radziner has launched a unisex collection of handcrafted white brass jewelry, including rings, cuffs, and earrings. The new collection is available for order at www.marmolradzinerjewelry.com. The white brass collection emerged out of a desire to expand and complement Marmol Radziner Jewelry’s current offerings in brass and bronze. Needing a gift for a friend who only wears platinum and silver tone metals, Chief Jewelry Designer Robin Cottle saw an opportunity to grow and diversify the collection. White brass, also known as nickel silver, is a copper alloy with nickel and zinc. The silvery appearance of white brass pairs well with other cooler-toned metals like stainless steel, platinum, silver and white gold. Alternatively, Marmol Radziner’s white brass jewelry can be paired with the current collection, which comes in light, natural, distressed, dark, and torched finishes. Like the existing collection, the new collection is fabricated in small production runs by the firm’s own in-house metal shop. Each piece is handcrafted by master craftsmen who produce the firm’s custom architectural hardware and furniture. “Exploring new ways to create wearable jewelry made from architectural material is an exciting challenge for us,” says Cottle. “Unlike the tradition of cast jewelry, we cut, torch, and hammer to create each ring, earring, and cuff.” Marmol Radziner Jewelry was originally conceived in 2010 by Marmol Radziner Design Principal Ron Radziner, who had little luck finding men’s jewelry that was both minimal and substantial.

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN NARRATIVE The architecture of the Resort at Cayo Largo is deeply rooted in the modernist heritage of Latin America and the indigenous architecture of Puerto Rico’s history. Drawing inspiration from the designs of architects such as Félix Candela of Mexico, Oscar Niemeyer and Lina Bo Bardi of Brazil, and contemporary Puerto Rican architects such as John Hix of Vieques, the resort engages guests in a dialogue between contrasting visual concepts of mass and void, weight and weightlessness, light and shadow, and texture and smoothness. Simultaneously, the architecture reflects Marmol Radziner’s design philosophy that emphasizes the connection between a building’s interior spaces and the natural beauty of the site. Each building on the site is unique in its form and visual expression. The buoyant sculptural form of the Arrivals building contrasts with the understated guest villas nearby. The angled gable roofs of the Market Square recall the simple wood and metal houses of old Puerto Rico. Long walls of glass extend the interior spaces outward into the lush gardens and outdoor terraces throughout the resort and frame views of the ocean in the distance. Locally-sourced materials, including tropical hardwoods, textured concrete, natural stone, plaster, and terracotta brick, create a distinct tropical modern vernacular. RON RADZINER, FAIA MARMOL RADZINER Ron Radziner, FAIA, is the design partner of the design-build practice Marmol Radziner. The Los Angeles and San Francisco based firm is known for it’s work in architecture, construction, landscape, interior, and furniture design, as well as the restoration of historic modern buildings by lengendary architects, such as Richard Neutra, Rudolph Schindler and Cliff May.
