The Cinema of Derek Jarman and Humphrey Jennings’
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MUSEUM OF THE MOVING IMAGE PRESENTS ‘POETS OF PANDAEMONIUM: THE CINEMA OF DEREK JARMAN AND HUMPHREY JENNINGS’ February 8–17, 2019 Astoria, New York, January 23, 2019—From February 8 through 17, 2019, Museum of the Moving Image will present Poets of Pandaemonium: The Cinema of Derek Jarman and Humphrey Jennings, a partial dual retrospective that allows these two English filmmakers’ work to be experienced in juxtaposition. Jennings (1907–1950) was a pioneering documentarian who captured life during wartime and the immediate postwar period, while Jarman’s (1942–1994) iconoclastic films addressed late- twentieth-century queer life. Organized by guest curator Max Carpenter, the screening series looks at the two directors—and their reactions to the external and internal turmoils of their ages—through seven pairings. Of particular note, this February marks 25 years since Jarman’s death. Many of the films will be presented in rare imported 35mm prints and restored DCPs. The series will also be presented at Harvard Film Archive from January 25 through February 11. The films of Humphrey Jennings and Derek Jarman are separated by a gulf of decades, decades in which their native Britain metamorphosed from a world power into a melancholy little island. They were both radical in their employment of audiovisual montage, non-professional actors, and their frequent use of recited poetry, though Jennings utilized these techniques in the espousal of his signature brand of optimistic patriotism, while Jarman was preoccupied by the psychological strife of late-twentieth- century queer life. The two artists shared a detached skepticism of the cinematic medium; as dually accomplished abstract painters, skilled theatrical designers, and acclaimed authors, they saw the cinema as only one facet of their voluminous oeuvres. -

Abstract The 1960s was a period of change for the British cinema, as it was for so much else. The six feature films directed by John Schlesinger in that decade stand as an exemplar of what those changes were. They also demonstrate a fundamental change in the narrative form used by mainstream cinema. Through a close analysis of these films, A Kind of Loving, Billy Liar, Darling, Far From the Madding Crowd, Midnight Cowboy and Sunday Bloody Sunday, this thesis examines the changes as they took hold in mainstream cinema. In effect, the thesis establishes that the principal mode of narrative moved from one based on objective realism in the tradition of the documentary movement to one which took a subjective mode of narrative wherein the image on the screen, and the sounds attached, were not necessarily a record of the external world. The world of memory, the subjective world of the mind, became an integral part of the narrative. -

The Great Documentaries II Instructor: Michael Fox Mondays, 12 noon-1:30pm, June 7-28, 2021 [email protected] With nonfiction films entrenched as a genre of mainstream movie entertainment, we examine standouts of the contemporary documentary. The five-session lineup is comprised of a trio of films about recent historical events bookended by personal documentaries. This lecture and discussion class (students will view the films on their own prior to class) encompasses perennial issues such as the responsibility of the filmmaker to his/her subject, the slipperiness of truth, the tools of storytelling and the use of poetry and metaphor in nonfiction. Four of the films can be streamed for free (three on Kanopy, one on Hoopla) and the other can be rented from Amazon Prime and other platforms. All the films are probably available via Netflix’s DVD plan. The Great Documentaries II is a historical survey that follows and builds on Documentary Touchstones I and II, which I taught at OLLI a few years ago. I’ve appended a list of those films and more information at the end of the syllabus, if you have never seen them and wish to journey further back into the history of documentaries. Most of the titles are available to watch for free on YouTube, although the quality of the prints varies. June 7 Sherman’s March (1986, Ross McElwee, 158 min) Kanopy After his girlfriend leaves him, McElwee voyages along the original route followed by Gen. William Sherman. Rather than cutting a swath of destruction designed to force the Confederate South into submission, McElwee searches for love, camera in hand, “training his lens with phallic resolve on every accessible woman he meets.” Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, named one of the Top 20 docs of all time by the International Documentary Association, added to the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 2000. -

In between, we will examine Social & Political Documentaries, the Russian Revolution and Kino-Eye, Cinéma Vérité and the rise of the Rock n’ Roll Doc, the Holocaust and representation, the essay film, and performance. Come prepared to think about how we see the “real world” of everyday life through film, television, social media, and the Internet. At the conclusion of the course, students will have a working knowledge of the theory and history of documentary media and will have completed a short documentary project that incorporates creative production and research on topics of interest in historical or contemporary contexts. “It’s a true story. THE COMMUNICATING VILLAGE: HUMPHREY JENNINGS AND SURREALISM NEIL GEORGE COOMBS A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of Liverpool John Moores University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy January 2014 1 Acknowledgments. With thanks to my supervisors Dr David Sorfa and Dr Lydia Papadimitriou for their support during the process of writing this thesis. 2 Abstract This thesis examines the films of Humphrey Jennings, exploring his work in relation to surrealism. This examination provides an overview of how surrealism’s set of ideas is manifest in Jennings’s documentary film work. The thesis does not assert that his films are surrealist texts or that there is such a thing as a surrealist film; rather it explores how his films, produced in Britain in the period from 1936 to 1950, have a dialectical relationship with surrealism. The thesis first considers Jennings’s work in relation to documentary theory, outlining how and why he is considered a significant filmmaker in the documentary field. It then goes on to consider Jennings’s engagement with surrealism in Britain in the years prior to World War Two. The thesis identifies three paradoxes relating to surrealism in Britain, using these to explore surrealism as an aura that can be read in the films of Jennings. The thesis explores three active phases of Jennings’s film work, each phase culminating in a key film. It acknowledges that Spare Time (1939) and Listen to Britain (1942) are key films in Jennings’s oeuvre, examining these two films and then emphasising the importance of a third, previously generally overlooked, film, The Silent Village (1943). -

The Great Documentaries Instructor: Michael Fox Tuesdays, 2:30-4:00pm, January 19-March 9, 2021 [email protected] With nonfiction films entrenched as a genre of mainstream movie entertainment, we revisit the pivotal films that established the technique, tone and tenor of the modern documentary. From Frederick Wiseman’s Titicut Follies (1967) to Werner Herzog’s Grizzly Man (2005), this screening, lecture and discussion class appraises key works of lasting power and influence. The discussion will encompass perennial issues such as the responsibility of the filmmaker to the subject, truth and storytelling, the thin line between observation and activism and our evolving relationship to images. The Great Documentaries is a historical survey that follows and builds on Documentary Touchstones I and II, which I taught at OLLI a few years ago. Jan. 19 Titicut Follies (1967, Frederick Wiseman, 84 min) Kanopy Wiseman’s debut film is a stark and graphic portrayal of the conditions that existed at the State Prison for the Criminally Insane at Bridgewater, Mass, documenting the various ways the inmates are treated by the guards, social workers and psychiatrists. “A great work, a near-masterpiece not just of the documentary form but of moviemaking in any category. Course Description “Non-fiction contains any number of ‘fictive’ elements, moments at which a presumably objective representation of the world encounters the necessity of creative intervention.” Michael Renov in Theorizing Documentary: 2 Historically, the dominant perception of documentary or non-fiction cinemas is that they teach us about the ‘real’ world by documenting truth transparently. However, this course will consider documentary as a form of representation and as such, trouble its relationship to the ‘objective reality’ it seeks to represent. What is at stake in representing the ‘historical real’? What issues of selection and mediation intrude between the reality unfolding in front of the lens and the projection of that reality on a screen? As theorists such as Michael Renov and Bill Nichols argue, although a documentary film references the historical world and actual people, it also constructs an audience’s understanding of this world and its inhabitants through point of view and the post-production process. Early practitioners and theorists of documentary were well aware of this contradiction; John Grierson, the so-called ‘father’ of documentary film and one of its first theorists describes documentary as “the creative treatment of actuality,” but audiences were frequently unaware of this creative element, often reading documentary film as ‘true’. -

Flanagan, Ph.D. University of Pittsburgh, 2015 This dissertation argues that discussions of war representation that privilege the nationalistic, heroic, and redemptively sacrificial strand of storytelling that dominate popular memory in Britain ignore a whole counter-history of movies that view war as an occasion to critique through devices like humor, irony, and existential alienation. Instead of selling audiences on what Graham Dawson has called “the pleasure culture of war” (a nationally self-serving mode of talking about and profiting from war memory), many texts about war are motivated by other intellectual and ideological factors. Each chapter includes historical context and periodizing arguments about different moments in British cultural history, explores genre trends, and ends with a comparative analysis of representative examples. -

Anita Jorge 220 SOUNDINGS Introduction ‘Do you think that modern war has no music? That mechanisation has banished harmony, and that because her life is for the moment so grim Britain no longer thinks of singing? What an error’ (Jennings, 1942, p. 1). These words, taken from Humphrey Jennings’s treatment of his ‘sonic documentary’ Listen to Britain, made in 1942 and sponsored by the British Ministry of Information, are emblematic of the wartime offcial discourse that postulated the intrinsic musicality of the sounds of warfare. Offcial discourses on sound were not new: they had started to develop in the inter-war period in reaction to the emergence of new kinds of noise that came to be associated with the advent of ‘modern civilisation’. As extensively shown by James Mansell (2016), during the war, the debate broadened out to become a matter of national well-being, and above all, social cohesion. Positing that a discrete collection of sounds possessed an intrinsic musicality was part and parcel of the offcial propaganda discourse aimed at rationalizing the unknown and controlling the fears of civilians. It implied that something as chaotic and unfathomable as the sounds of warfare was actually driven by a sense of purpose and harmony, and that Britons were ‘pulling together’ in the war effort to the sound of a ‘national symphony’ across social and geographical divides. It was also a way of reassuring the people by maintaining the illusion that there existed an organised and systematic retaliation to enemy attacks.
