This thesis is dedicated to my father Frank William Salter (1947-2005) 4 Women’s M-O Diaries: Writing, Time & ‘Subjective Cameras’ Abstract This thesis concerns women’s wartime diaries written for the radical social research organisation Mass-Observation (M-O) between 1939 and 1967, treating these as ‘social texts’ informed by social and temporal practices which also influence what ‘a diary’ is more widely perceived to ‘be’ as a genre of writing. It analyses the centrality of time and temporality to these social practices, to the relationship between writing and representation, and also to what it was to write a diary specifically for M-O and thus to position oneself as a ‘subjective camera’. Chapter One overviews the genesis and activities of M-O, its co-founders’ research perspectives and how these influenced activities in Worktown and the Economics of Everyday Life project and also in Blackheath, London. Blackheath activities are examined in detail because M-O’s Directives and Day-Diaries were organised from there, the latter providing the material for Jennings and Madge’s (1937) May Twelfth , the basis for their conceptualisation of ‘subjective cameras’ and also the starting point for the wartime diaries. Chapter Two discusses the origins of the wartime diaries, and analyses anthologies compiled using this material, the individual M-O diaries that have been published, and two attempts in the 1940s to produce M-O books from the diaries, discussing how previous uses have influenced my own analytic approach. Chapter Three examines the complications that M-O diaries make to popular understandings of the diary form, in particular by the multiple and diverse influences impinging upon writing a diary for M-O. A key example concerns overlaps between M-O diaries and letters, showing that epistolary conventions and practices are extensively drawn on by M-O and its diarists and that inscription of times and dates are central to this. Chapter Four examines temporal aspects of the diary- genre and analyses their writing ‘over time’ by focusing on the long-term diary written by Nella Last, what she did with time in its pages, and how the methodological approach I utilised for sampling and analysing it impacts on interpretation of temporal matters. Chapter Five analyses diary-entries written by different women for the same dates, exploring discrete specific temporal points to examine what is happening with time in relation to this, again reflectively commenting on the interpretational consequences of methodological strategies. The Conclusion considers M-O’s idea of diarists as ‘subjective cameras’ and theorises its connections to time and diary-writing. 5 Women’s M-O Diaries: Writing, Time & ‘Subjective Cameras’ Guide to Reader The spelling, punctuation, grammar and emphases used in the manuscript Mass-Observation materials have been followed as closely as possible and are retained in the extracts used in this thesis, unless otherwise indicated. With some extracts (usually, but not exclusively, when quoting more than one diary-entry written by the same diarist in succession or when quoting from M-O organisational notes/letters), I have also attempted to retain their format to give an impression of the layout of the text, although I acknowledge that in most cases the word-processing of this thesis will have made a difference. I have used ellipses to indicate where words from quotations have been excised and, to the best of my knowledge, all such editorial interventions are ‘marked’ in the text, although I of course recognise the likelihood of my own error. I have used square brackets to show where I occasionally insert additional and non- original text within the text of diary-entries and other quotations. And in a few cases I have enclosed a question mark within these square brackets to denote words in the original manuscripts that could not be confidently interpreted.     FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MUSEUM OF THE MOVING IMAGE PRESENTS ‘POETS OF PANDAEMONIUM: THE CINEMA OF DEREK JARMAN AND HUMPHREY JENNINGS’ February 8–17, 2019 Astoria, New York, January 23, 2019—From February 8 through 17, 2019, Museum of the Moving Image will present Poets of Pandaemonium: The Cinema of Derek Jarman and Humphrey Jennings, a partial dual retrospective that allows these two English filmmakers’ work to be experienced in juxtaposition. Jennings (1907–1950) was a pioneering documentarian who captured life during wartime and the immediate postwar period, while Jarman’s (1942–1994) iconoclastic films addressed late- twentieth-century queer life. Organized by guest curator Max Carpenter, the screening series looks at the two directors—and their reactions to the external and internal turmoils of their ages—through seven pairings. Of particular note, this February marks 25 years since Jarman’s death. Many of the films will be presented in rare imported 35mm prints and restored DCPs. The series will also be presented at Harvard Film Archive from January 25 through February 11. The films of Humphrey Jennings and Derek Jarman are separated by a gulf of decades, decades in which their native Britain metamorphosed from a world power into a melancholy little island. They were both radical in their employment of audiovisual montage, non-professional actors, and their frequent use of recited poetry, though Jennings utilized these techniques in the espousal of his signature brand of optimistic patriotism, while Jarman was preoccupied by the psychological strife of late-twentieth- century queer life. The two artists shared a detached skepticism of the cinematic medium; as dually accomplished abstract painters, skilled theatrical designers, and acclaimed authors, they saw the cinema as only one facet of their voluminous oeuvres.

The portraits are shown to be responses to modern life, revealed not in formally avant- garde depictions, but in the subject-matter. Industrial growth, the increasing population, expanding suburbs, and a renewed interest in the outdoor life and popular entertainment are reflected in Fleetwood-Walker’s artistic output. The role played by exhibition culture in the creation of the portraits is analysed: developing retail theory affected gallery design and exhibition layout and in turn impacted on the size, subject matter and style of Fleetwood-Walker’s portraits.

Monroe’s difficulties finding publishers and readers for her work led her to establish Poetry: A Magazine of Verse to publish and encourage appreciation for the best new writing. 2. Stern This portrait head was made from life by the American artist Joan Fitzgerald in the winter and spring of 1963. Pound was then living in Venice, where Fitzgerald had moved to take advantage of a foundry which cast her work. Fitzgerald made another, somewhat more abstract, head of Pound, which is in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. Pound preferred this version, now in the collection of Richard G. Stern. Pound’s last years were lived in the political shadows cast by his indictment for treason because of the broadcasts he made from Italy during the war years. Pound was returned to the United States in 1945; he was declared unfit to stand trial on grounds of insanity and confined to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital for thirteen years. Stern’s novel Stitch (1965) contains a fictional account of some of these events.

Abstract The 1960s was a period of change for the British cinema, as it was for so much else. The six feature films directed by John Schlesinger in that decade stand as an exemplar of what those changes were. They also demonstrate a fundamental change in the narrative form used by mainstream cinema. Through a close analysis of these films, A Kind of Loving, Billy Liar, Darling, Far From the Madding Crowd, Midnight Cowboy and Sunday Bloody Sunday, this thesis examines the changes as they took hold in mainstream cinema. In effect, the thesis establishes that the principal mode of narrative moved from one based on objective realism in the tradition of the documentary movement to one which took a subjective mode of narrative wherein the image on the screen, and the sounds attached, were not necessarily a record of the external world. The world of memory, the subjective world of the mind, became an integral part of the narrative.

S. Eliot and Kathleen Raine: Two Contemplative Poets* Grevel Lindop oets who are true mystics are very rare. Nonetheless there have P been, even in recent times, poets who approached contemplative experience despite living in a secular age and culture, where spiritual quests have seemed very much a minority interest. Neither T. S. Eliot nor Kathleen Raine was a mystic in the full sense. Eliot himself said, towards the end of his life in 1963, ‘I don’t think I am a mystic at all, though I have always been much interested in mysticism.’ And he added, ‘A great many people of sensibility have had some more or less mystical experiences. That doesn’t make them mystics. To be a mystic is a full-time job—so is poetry.’1 This may give us a key-signature, as it were, for approaching these two poets who were not mystics but who, in Eliot’s words, were ‘much interested in mysticism’ and had ‘some more or less mystical experiences’. To write about such experiences in poetry means, in some degree, attempting a communication of some aspect of them to the reader. And since mystical experience is notoriously incommunicable, this implies a particularly interesting challenge, or perhaps a paradox. T. S. Eliot was born in 1888 in St Louis, Missouri, and came to England, which became his permanent home, in 1915.
