Kindly approach the Club Treasurer for your payments. Thank you for coming and enjoy the rest of the evening. PORTSIDE CLUB BULLETIN President’s Message – January 2020 Today in 1950, President Elpidio Quirino writes to Rep. Miguel Cuenco justifying the government's investment in De la Rama Steamship Co.'s acquisition of three vessels as proper and in conformity with the government's program to encourage overseas shipping by the Philippine merchant marine. The De la Rama deal is a major issue in the Osmeña-Cuenco political feud. (Sergio Osmeña, Jr., is president of De la Rama Steamship Co). Also, today in 1622, a battle between a Spanish expeditionary force and 1, 500 rebels in Bohol takes place. The Spanish force consists of 50 Spanish and 1, 000 Cebuano troops under Juan de Alcarazo, alcalde mayor of Cebu. The Bohol rebellion is quelled after two weeks. And lastly, today in 1961, Toledo is formally inaugurated as a chartered city under Republic Act No. 2688. Welcome everyone to our Rotary meeting tonight! Happy New Year Thank you for joining our Christmas Party last December 2, 2019 held at Cebu Country Club and the Governor's Night last December 6, 2019 at the Tent, Mandani Bay. As we just celebrated our Christmas Day followed by New Year's eve with full of long non- working holidays, I know that a few of us are still in a vacation mode. Let us start the year with full of confidence and high spirit praying that God will give us good health and more blessings for the coming days. We are now on another chapter and another challenging year. 2020 is the Year of the Rat according to Chinese zodiac. This is a Year of Metal Rat, starting from the 2020 Chinese New Year on January 25 and lasting to 2021 Lunar New Year's Eve on February 11. Rat is the first in the 12-year cycle of Chinese zodiac. The Years of the Rat include 1912, 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008, 2020, 2032... Though people consider the rat not adorable, and it even makes its way into derogatory languages, it ranks first on the Chinese zodiac signs. It has characteristics of an animal with spirit, wit, alertness, delicacy, flexibility and vitality. District Conference 2020 As relayed by our Rotary Viber group, our District Conference (DisCon) 2020 is held this PORTSIDE CLUB BULLETIN March 5 – 7, 2020 at Cebu Grand Convention Center, Banilad, Cebu City. Let us all participate this activity and join our Cebuano District Governor in welcoming delegates from our District 3860. Rotarian spouses and Rotaractors may also attend to this event. Promo registration cost (with deadlien until January 31, 2020) is Php4,500.00 for Rotarian (Php3,000.00 for Spouse and Rotaractor). After January 31, cost is raised to Php6,000.00. Club listing is at Php3,500.00 per club. You may deposit your payment to the BPI account designated (Account Number “9121- 0074-84”, “BPI Robinson's Galleria” depository bank under the name “RC Cebu West Rotarians, Inc.”) and use the deposit slip during your online registration. No Onsite Registration anymore allowed per announced by the District. DisCon 2020 is a time – among others – to personally meet RI President's representative (who will give an update on Rotary International, inspires and motivates participants), hear reports by the District Governor to the district (including its successes and challenges), witness local and international speakers giving information (on topics relevant to district members), and time to network (reconnect with friends, and find inspiration for continuing service and community leadership). For the other events in the DisCon 2020, our Club – RCCPC – is tasked to host the Golf and Bowling tournaments on March 4, 2020. Thus, we will have to formally assign Committee Chairmen for these activities and a Board Meeting will be called within the week for this purpose. Meeting Make-Up Another appeal to our Club members who are unable to attend regular Rotary meeting. There is now an easier way of having Make-up, which I already tried doing it online thru Rotary E-Club of the West –website address at: https://www.rotaryeclubwest.org/make- up/.
