Our district covers 532 square miles from the Columbia River to the base of Mt. Hood. Hood River is known as the “Windsurfing Capital” of the world due to the geography of the Gorge. Other recreational activities are abundant such as mountain biking, skiing, snowboarding and running. Our town has been featured in many magazines including: Outside, National Geographic, Sunset and others. The natural beauty of the area, along with its reputation as a recreation paradise, stimulated economic growth and has increased cultural and economic diversity in the valley. Hood River Valley had historically been an agriculture/timber based economy. A migrant population that traditionally was seasonal labor is becoming more established in the community year round adding to the diversity of the community as a whole. Our graduation rate for Latinos is the 3rd highest in the state and our dropout rate in one of the lowest in the state at 4%. Academics Hood River Valley High School is a four-year comprehensive 5A high school serving 1,300 students, grades 9-12. The academic program is organized on a rotating block schedule with eight 90-minute classes – four each day. Freshman and sophomores must take eight classes. Juniors and seniors must take a minimum of five classes. Students earn .5 credit for passing each semester course. The school year is two semesters of approximately 18 weeks in length. Grade Scale and Ranking: A = 4.0 (90%-100%) B = 3.0 (80%-89%) C = 2.0 (70%-79%) D = 1.0 (60%-69%) F = No credit P = grade is C- or above GPA is unweighted. Rank is compiled based on GPA and is unweighted. All students must also present an Extended Application (EA) project demonstrating a Career Related Learning Experience as a part of the graduation requirements for HRVHS and the State of Oregon. Students also benefit from an extensive co-curricular program. HRVHS students are involved in over 25 different clubs in the areas of academics, culture, athletics, special interest and community service. Each year our students bring in over 100,000 cans of food and several thousand dollars to support our local food bank during our Canned Food Drive. Our Engineering and Robotics team consistently win awards at the state level, along with the Electric Car Race Team. Our students are also competitive on the athletic field. HRVHS offers 17 different sports throughout the school year and a large part of our student body is involved in one or more sport. Our Ski Team has brought home several state championships over the years being one of the most renowned programs in the state.
