CUZCO & MACHU PICCHU (8D / 7N) – Luxury Collection SUNDAY CUZCO & MACHU PICCHU (8D / 7N) – Luxury Collection SUNDAY: Guayaquil - Lima Upon arrival on Aerogal Flight 37 from Galapagos to Guayaquil at 3:10PM, transfer to the international terminal to check-in for your flight to Lima on LAN or TACA Airlines departing late afternoon. Upon arrival in Lima to the Jorge Chavez International Airport, you will be met by our guide and transferred to your hotel. Overnight Westin Hotel Lima. Westin Hotel Lima (Opened in 2011) Located in San Isidro, Lima’s financial district, the Westin Hotel Lima has 300 spacious rooms and suites all equipped with Westin amenities such as heavenly beds with plush pillow top mattress and pillows, and heavenly bath with vertical showerhead and plush towels, offering exceptional restaurants and concierge service and helpful staff. MONDAY: Lima – Cuzco – Sacred Valley After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight to Cuzco on LAN Peru departing in the morning, Upon arrival to Cusco, transfer to the Sacred Valley of the Incas (1 ½ hrs by van) to the Tambo del Inka, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa Hotel in Urubamba. The rest of the day is at your leisure to acclimate to the altitude and enjoy this 5 star property. TUESDAY – Urubamba – Pisac – Ollantamambo – Machu Picchu After buffet breakfast, depart the town and fortresses of Ollantaytambo and drive up and hike the splendid Inca ruins of Pisac, a large complex of religious temples, agricultural terraces and Astronomic observatories. A lunch buffet and ceviche bar is provided at Tunupa. After lunch, we visit Pisac, a picturesque town of creole and colonial aspect that comes alive on market day. People from surrounding communities converge on the tiny central plaza to buy and sell produce, alpaca sweaters, and beautiful llama rugs of all sizes, blankets, cotton fabric, musical instruments, and food. Transfer to the Ollanta train station for a 1 ½ hr scenic ride through the Valley to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo). Dinner and overnight at the Hotel Sumaq. Join a cooking class and learn to make Peruvian ceviche or Pisco Sour or indulge in relaxing treatments at the Aquila Spa WEDNESDAY: Machu Picchu After buffet breakfast, the bus will collect you in front of the hotel for a 30-minute ride up to the breathtaking Lost City of the Incas, Machu Picchu followed by a guided tour through the ruins. Lunch is included at the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge. The afternoon is free to explore the ruins on your own and return to the hotel at your leisure. Dinner and overnight at the Hotel Sumaq. THURSDAY: Machu Picchu - Cusco After buffet breakfast, you are free to return to Machu Picchu (on your own, no guide or bus tickets provided) or you may choose to go on foot but you must leave early (6am). The overnight stay allows you to fully explore the altars, temples, fountains, staircases and terraced gardens early – before the crowds arrive. If you are adventuresome, you may want to walk to Inti Punku or the “Gate of the Sun” a mountain pass on a hill behind the site through which the Inca Trail passes on its approach to Machu Picchu. Or you may wish to climb Huayna Picchu, the peak that rises dramatically above the ancient citidel. Return to the hotel for afternoon departure by train to Cusco (3 ½ hrs). These spectacular carriages have beautiful panoramic windows offering scenic views and photographic opportunities. With glass surrounding them on all sides, passengers feel they are part of the landscape. Upon arrival, transfer to Libertador Palacio del Inka Cusco Hotel. Libertador Palacio del Inka Cusco Hotel This impressive 254 room hotel is located directly in front of the Koricancha or Temple of the Sun, and surrounded by magnificent Inca and colonial buildings. Its spacious guest rooms with queen or king size bed are located in a quiet part of the hotel, some with direct view of the temple, and others with wireless internet service, cable TV, mini bar, laundry service and 24 hour room service, restaurant, bar, café gym sauna, Jacuzzi and courtyards. FRIDAY: Cusco Buffet breakfast at your hotel, afterwards explore this capital of the Inca Empire including visits to “Plaza de Armas” (main square), the Cathedral and the Santo Domingo Monastery (Koricancha). Also visit the surrounding ruins of Kenko, Puka Pukara, Tampu Machay and the fortress and religious site of Sacsayhuaman. Overnight Libertador Palacio del Inka Cusco SATURDAY: Cusco – Lima Transfer to the airport for your fight on LAN from Cuzco to Lima departing mid-morning. Upon arrival, transfer to the Casa Andina Private Collection in Miraclores. Afternoon city tour of Lima includes: The Cathedral, "Plaza Mayor" (main square), Government, Archbishop, and Torre Tagle Palaces. Afterwards, drive through Lima's modern residential areas: San Isidro with its olive grove, golf course, and “Huaca Huallamarca”; and Miraflores with its Central Park, “Parque del Amor”, and ocean views. The private museum of Miguel Mujica Gallo includes a splendid display of gold objects and ornaments which illustrate the craftsmanship of the ancient Peruvian cultures of Chavin, Paracas, Nazca, Lambayeque, Mochica, and Chimu. This museum also houses an eclectic arms collection which includes old Peruvian weapons and ancient, bizarre firearms. Overnight Westin Hotel Lima.     AC 2011-2240: MATHEMATICS AND ARCHITECTURE OF THE INCAS IN PERU Cheri Shakiban, University of St. Thomas I am a professor of mathematics at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota, where I have been a faculty member since 1983. I received my Ph.D. in 1979 from Brown University in Formal Cal- culus of Variations. My recent area of research is mostly in computer vision, with applications to object recognition. My publications are in diverse areas of mathematics and engineering. I love to work with undergraduate students, in particular, underrepresented students, to get them involved in doing research in mathematics and encourage them to give conference presentations/posters and submit their work for publication. In addition to teaching regular math courses, I also like to create and teach innovative courses such as ”Mathematical symmetry of Southern Spain” and ”Mathematics and Architecture of the Incas in Peru”, which I have taught as study abroad courses several times. Michael P. Hennessey, University of St. Thomas Michael P. Hennessey (Mike) joined the full-time faculty as an Assistant Professor fall semester 2000. He is an expert in machine design, computer-aided-engineering, and in the kinematics, dynamics, and control of mechanical systems, along with related areas of applied mathematics. Presently, he has published 41 technical papers (published or accepted), in journals (9), conferences (31), or magazines (1). In 2006 he was tenured and promoted to the rank of Associate Professor. Mike gained 10 years of industrial and academic research lab experience at 3M, FMC, and the University of Minnesota prior to embarking on an academic career at Rochester Institute of Technology (3 years) and Minnesota State University, Mankato (2 years).

Dichos accidentes geográficos —reverenciados como apus, wakas y paqarinas— constituyeron los escenarios en los que se protagonizaron importantes aconteci- mientos históricos y míticos. Como elementos tangibles y reales, enraizaron y fortalecieron a los diferentes ayllus y grupos humanos del valle durante la hegemonía andina prehispánica. Abstract The mountains which define the valley of Cusco and which were responsible for its occupation have been considered sacred within the context of Andean magico-religiosity. These geographical features —rever- entially referred to as apus, wakas and paqarinas— constituted sites in the landscape that gave rise to important historical and mythical events. As real and tangible places, these landscape features engendered and nourished the different ayllus during the pre-Hispanic hegemony of these human groups within the valley.
