Jerónimo Saavedra Acevedo Alcalde de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria 4 Cultural excellence 2011 will be an exceptionally important and decisive year for the general citizens of the city of Las Palmas de GC. Before the end of June and if many of the forecasts are correct, we could become the European Capital of Cutlure after passing with flying colours the exam to which we were submitted by the European experts last year in Summer and being chosen as a finalist. Some eternal pessimists droned that this aim was totally inaccessible but we have fed upon the illusion, day by day, working tirelessly for a seamless, modern city based on solidarity, sensitivity and culture that opens up a future full of accomplishments and social progress. However, these proposals do not only find their justification in this crowded programme of activities that we have produced over the last few years as a resut of the bid for the Cultural Capital of Europe of our city, but also by way of consolidation of one of the main cultural venues in our city, growing in success, year by year, over more than a decade and which has become, with time, one of the historic references of our community, with echoes, above all, in the voice of our younger generations and talents, beyond our island frontiers. These great artistic manifestations which are able to pull together thousands of spectators and which have placed our brand on the market in far-flung places in the world are, doubtless, one of the pulsating arteries of cultural life in our city. We have been, and will be the showcase for creative works from the most diverse parts of the world, which make manifest the breadth and scope of creative sensitivity and the various windows onto the conflicts presented in our complex world. Meanwhile, in the first week of April, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will house among its broad variety of cultural proposals, the twelfth edition of the famous Festival of Film, a date not to be missed, much the same as the festival of Theatre and Dance and the International Music festival or WOMAD, a must for the many avid fans in search of novelties, innovation, emotions and thrills. The city is truly proud to hold this international festival each year and to receive dozens of famous people linked to the world of inter- national film over nine intense days of screenings, debates, presentations, round tables, press conferences, exhibitions and a long et- cetera of activities related to the present state of art of signature cinema. The Festival’s twelve years of cultural solvency represent its best institutional publicity and endorsement. This edition will once again allow for the creative work of filmmakers from all corners of the world to be made known and valued by our filmgoers, at a time when the crisis is most acute for backing for culture and any artistic activity which demands a sizeable investment. This Festival, like any other in the world, is demanding in terms of time and energy of all the people involved in making it come about above all given our shared commitment towards maintaining standards and being as demanding artistically as ever. Aware as we are of the relevance both inside and outside of Gran Canaria of this international forum, there has never been any doubt in our mind as to the importance of backing its permanence in time. The Film Festival will show us the State of the Art in the world of cinemas, showing us films on the periphery of the major circuits and underlining the importance of certain figures who shine with a light of their own in the contemporary film world. In short, it will suggest new and interesting perspectives from which to review the reality of our world.

ABSTRACT This article tries to sum up the basic phases of japanese cinematography, from its origin at the end of the niniteen century to the beginning of this millenium. The essen- tial stages are described and put in order, the historical, social and cultural reasons are searched. They all expound the special shape of this exotic cinema, one of the worthier in the world scene. 1. Religious Studies 181B Political Islam and the Response of Iranian Cinema Fall 2012 Wednesdays 5‐7:50 PM HSSB 3001E PROFESSOR JANET AFARY Office: HSSB 3047 Office Hours; Wednesday 2:00‐3:00 PM E‐Mail: [email protected] Assistant: Shayan Samsami E‐Mail: [email protected] Course Description Artistic Iranian Cinema has been influenced by the French New Wave and Italian neorealist styles but has its own distinctly Iranian style of visual poetry and symbolic lanGuaGe, brinGinG to mind the delicate patterns and intricacies of much older Iranian art forms, the Persian carpet and Sufi mystical poems. The many subtleties of Iranian Cinema has also stemmed from the filmmakers’ need to circumvent the harsh censorship rules of the state and the financial limitations imposed on independent filmmakers. Despite these limitations, post‐revolutionary Iranian Cinema has been a reGular feature at major film festivals around the Globe. The minimalist Art Cinema of Iran often blurs the borders between documentary and fiction films. Directors employ non‐professional actors. Male and female directors and actors darinGly explore the themes of Gender inequality and sexual exploitation of women in their work, even thouGh censorship laws forbid female and male actors from touchinG one another. In the process, filmmakers have created aesthetically sublime metaphors that bypass the censors and directly communicate with a universal audience. This course is an introduction to contemporary Iranian cinema and its interaction with Political Islam. Special attention will be paid to how Iranian Realism has 1 developed a more tolerant discourse on Islam, culture, Gender, and ethnicity for Iran and the Iranian plateau, with films about Iran, AfGhanistan, and Central Asia.

  • 43E Festival International Du Film De La Rochelle Du 26 Juin Au 5 Juillet 2015 Le Puzzle Des Cinémas Du Monde

Centering on the reminiscences of Rose McNulty, a woman who has spent over fifty years in state institutions, The Secret Scripture is a deeply moving story of love lost and redeemed, against the backdrop of an emerging Irish state in which female sexuality and independence unsettles the colluding patriarchies of church and nationalist politics. Demonstrating Sheridan’s trademark skill with actors, his profound sense of story, and depth of feeling for Irish social history, The Secret Scripture marks a return to personal themes for the writer-director as well as a reunion with producer Noel Pearson, almost a quarter of a century after their breakout success with My Left Foot.

Palaeontology in the virtual era BOOK OF ABSTRACTS 6 4 PRESENTATION The 1st Palaeontological Virtual Congress (1st PVC) is just the natural consequence of the evolution of our surrounding world, with the emergence of new technologies that allow a wide range of communication possibilities. Within this context, the 1st PVC represents the frst attempt in palaeontology to take advantage of these new possibilites being the frst international palaeontology congress developed in a virtual environment. This online congress is pioneer in palaeontology, offering an exclusively virtual-developed environment to researchers all around the globe. The simplicity of this new format, giving international projection to the palaeontological research carried out by groups with limited economic resources (expensive registration fees, travel, accomodation and maintenance expenses), is one of our main achievements. This new format combines the benefts of traditional meetings (i.e., providing a forum for discussion, including guest lectures, feld trips or the production of an abstract book) with the advantages of the online platforms, which allow to reach a high number of researchers along the world, promoting the participation of palaeontologists from developing countries.
