The author’s interest in this particular subject was awoken while studying in Fukuoka Japan, where these legends seemed to be a popular interest amongst the public, or at least they thought it to be a good idea to share these legends with a foreigner. In this essay a general introduction is given to the term contemporary legends is explained with the help of Dr. Jan Harold Brunand who is a known folklorist and has written a number of books on the subject. Then the vengeful Japanese ghosts are introduced into the essay, their appearance and behavior, followed by the four legends chosen, Toire no Hanako-san, Aka Manto, Teke-Teke or Kashima Reiko and Kuchisake- Onna. Samples of western stories are also mentioned as to show that there are similar stories from other places of the world. As well as written research an online survey was conducted and shared with native Japanese where they were asked if they knew and believed in the four legends cited in this essay. Stories and believes of co-students and others in Japan were also taken into consideration.

CHAPTER II LITERATURE RIVEW 2.1 Designing Design is a plan or drawing produced to show the look and function or workings of some object or work. Design is very important to support the quality of a product. Design is also about the progress. In some cases, the direct construction of an object (engineering, management, coding, and graphic design) is also considered to use design thinking. According to Wiyancoko (2000), design is everything related to the drafting, data analysis, project planning, drawing, cost calculation, prototyping, testing frame, and test riding. Archer (1976) states that design is one form of physical and spiritual needs of human are described through a variety of experiences, expertise, and knowledge that reflects the attention to the appreciation and adaptation to his surroundings, especially relating to the form, composition, meaning, and value. While Jones (1970) states that Design is the actions and initiatives to transform human work. So based on the explanation above the writer concludes that design is one of the way or actions to form some work and relating to drafting, drawing, composting and testing. 2.2 Elements of Design In designing, the elements of design are really important. White (2011) states that design have nine elements: 1. Lines Lines connect two points and can be used to help define shapes, make divisions, and create textures. All lines, if they’re straight, have a length, width, and direction. There is no specific consideration in choosing the line to make a picture storybook. 2. Shapes Shapes are self-contained areas. To define the area, the graphic artist uses lines, differences in value, color, and/or texture.

Contemporary legends are a type of folk narrative, but unlike folk tales, they are believed to be true. They usually concern ordinary people who are known to the narrator, occur in familiar settings, and are generally conveyed orally. Drawing on her experience teaching in a variety of cultures, the author encourages other teachers to use contemporary legends as authentic texts for teaching both culture and communication skills. The paper presents adapted stories and accompanying questions and class activities, and offers seven sample lessons using some of the texts. Specific classroom techniques, and some caveats for the teacher, are noted. (Contains 13 references) . Thomas 1 Heather Thomas April 23, 2013 Folklore Collection Thomas Carter, Story His Mother Told Him of an Experience she had Around the Age of 20: My mother, now, said that before she was married, she was getting ready to marry some guy who had asked her to marry him, and she was considering it. One night she woke up—she said she woke up— at night, and sat up in her bed, and her mother’s ghost was standing at the foot of the bed. She said, “don’t marry him, you’ll be sorry”. So, she didn’t. Two years later, the guy she had been asked to marry, he died of tuberculosis. My grandfather, Thomas Carter is 77. He is a quiet yet clever person who enjoys humor, history, and trains. He lives in an area known locally as Hunton—a small portion of Henrico County, Virginia that sits on the border to Hanover along the Chickahominy River. He was born in a house located about five miles away from where he lives now and can even point out the exact location of that house. When my grandfather was two years old, his elder brother drowned in the Chickahominy, leaving his mother rather protective of him. Grandpa heard this story from his mother sometime during his childhood. Although unsure of exactly when his mother recounted the tale, he does “remember hearing about it” when he was young. My grandfather feels that his most significant life experience is his marriage to my grandmother, a marriage that reaches its 57th year in the fall.
