HHomer Causey won the starting job in camp over eight other signal ccallers. Causey sat out last season after transferring from Shaw UUniversity, where he played for Asberry as a freshman. Causey pplayed in nine games in 2011. He completed 50 of 97 passes for 7735 yards and 4 touchdowns. Two other promising quarterbacks aare Earnest Carrington a 6-3, 210 sophomore transfer from UL- MMonroe and freshman Jay Christophe (6-4, 205) from Brusly high sschool in Addis, Louisiana. Causey completed 6 of 17 passes for 83 yards and 1 touchdown in his fi rst game as a Tiger. He also rushed for 39 yards. Texas Southern vs. Sam Houston Texas Southern returns 15 starters, nine of them on defense. The Tigers defense will be led Head to Head by defensive coordinator Mike Vite who has several SWAC Championships during his 30 plus years of coaching. Former Alabama State defensive coordinator Cedric Thornton also TEAM STATS TSU SHSU joined the TSU coaching staff to coach the linebackers. The defense will be led by defensive RECORDS(overall /conf.) 0-1 / 0-1 1-1 / 0-0 backs Tray Walker and Le’Tevin Wilcox, TSU’s lone All-SWAC preseason pick. The heart of the defense starts up front with the defensive line according to Coach Vite. Fred Plummer was the TDs Passing 1 4 Tigers’ leading receiver in 2012 with 34 catches for 534 yards and 2 touchdowns. Malik Cross TOTAL OFFENSE 260 845 will be a deep threat for the Tigers. He sat out last season but he is extremely fast, has great KICK RETURNS: #-Yards 5-126 2-39 hands and knows the offense. Derek Shipman and Larry Clark are two other receivers that will be on the radar. Tight end Billy Rosenberg will also be a favorite target for the Tigers. PUNT RETURNS: #-Yards 0-0 7-131 INT RETURNS: #-Yards 0-0 4-94 Special teams will be a key to the Tigers success in 2013. TSU has two exceptional kickers, FUMBLES-LOST 4-2 2-1 Corey Carter and Eric Medina. Carter is the returning punter who averaged 55.5 yards a punt. PENALTIES-Yards 9-53 10-61 Medina is a freshman who has a strong leg and is very accurate. Plummer and Cross will handle punt returns while Perkins-Loving and Trent Richmond will return kick-offs. PUNTS-Yards 7-339 9-377 Average Per Punt 48.4 41.9 The Tigers should be stronger in every position. The key to a successful season is staying TIME OF POSSESSION/G 32:14 29:07 healthy. Limits on TSU’s recruiting numbers has hurt the depth chart but a good conditioning SACKS BY-Yards 0-0 2-5 program over the summer may help the Tigers stay in the game.
