    Chimney Rock State Park Master Plan 2011 4NEEDS ASSESSMENT Introduction In order to develop an appropriate design program for Chimney Rock State Park, it is important to consider the outdoor and recreational needs of a diverse range of past, present and future visitors. The assessment of these needs helps to define development alternatives for Chimney Rock State Park. A definition of ”need” comes from several sources: an examination of state and national surveys of outdoor needs and use in west- ern North Carolina, opinion surveys, and direct public input. It is clear through public input that potential users of Chimney Rock State Park are interested in a variety of park and recreational facilities. User trends and needs for specific recreational spaces and facilities have been identified both throughout the Hickory Nut Gorge region and the western part of North Carolina. Determining Regional & Local Need For Natural Resource-based Recreation Chimney Rock State Park is a world-class park and must be designed, developed and managed to meet di- verse visitor needs. Therefore, the need for natural resource-based recreation was examined through local, regional, and national sources of input. Examples include the State Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan, the National Survey of Recreation and the Environment, online surveys and public comment forms specific to Chimney Rock State Park, and public input from a planning workshop.     State Forest - DuPont State Forest Driving Directions from Asheville: I-26 E to NC 280 S (Exit 40). Take 280 to US 64 junction. Go east on 64 to Crab Creek Rd., then right. Right again onto Dupont Rd. to Hooker Falls parking lot on right before bridge. Hiking directions. From the Hooker Falls Parking lot follow trail to footbridge over Little River and up to Triple Falls. You can go down the steps to be nearer the falls, or you can go up to the overlook of the falls. Continue up to the left towards High Falls. When the trail veers right, stay left on the flat trail along the river to see High Falls from the base. Return to intersection and continue up to the lookout point of High Falls. Enjoy a snack at the picnic area at the overlook. You may continue up the path to the bridge that is over High Falls and see if you can spot Mt. Pisgah in the distance. Return to parking lot the same way. After crossing the footbridge, turn left to head towards Hooker Falls. It will be on the left. Go down a short hill to enjoy being by the water. Return to parking lot when done. Advisor: Steph Jeffries Abstract The Drawing the Natural Gardens project was initiated to bridge between the Botanical Illustration and Native Plant Studies programs by combining drawing and ecology. The goals of the project were a) to show the possibilities of nature journaling or field sketching for getting to know plant communities, plant/animal interactions among species, and plant interactions with their environments; b) to introduce others to the wonderful beauty and diversity of our North Carolina natural gardens and generate interest in saving what we have left. The project included visiting and drawing many of our North Carolina habitats in Mountains, Piedmont, and Coastal Plain and creating visual/verbal narratives of seasonal ecological observations, recording a slice of place at a point in time. Each drawing is an overview of a particular community on a particular day in a particular season, as observed in the field. This report contains scans of most of the sketchbook’s double-page spreads, which show how the drawings evolved from field sketches to studio- completed drawings, and includes some supplementary information about these habitats. For those of us who live here, North Carolina is our homeland. It is our special Place. Within the vast landscape of this beautiful state there are a wonderful variety of different natural habitats. Each habitat, with its unique combination of elements (elevation, topography, types of rock and soil, temperature, moisture) is home to special groupings of plants and animals.

The purpose of this effort was to identify, evaluate, and document the presence of unique features and/or significant ecological resources. This memorandum summarizes the findings of these efforts. Table 1 lists ecological communities found to occur at the Site, and the areal extent of each, based on the Classification of the Natural Communities of North Carolina (Schafale and Weakley, 1990). Table 2 lists rare, threatened, and endangered species confirmed at the Site. Table 3 lists bird and non-avian species observed at the Site during field assessments. A map specifying the location of ecological communities is provided in Figure 1. Figure 2 illustrates the juxtaposition of ecological communities relative to those contained within DuPont State Forest. Site topography and the locations of Significant Natural Heritage Areas and National Wetland Inventory wetlands occurring at the Site are depicted in Figure 3. Appendix A provides a list of Transylvania County species with state and/or federal status. A description of ecological communities, along with a list of species associated with each community, is detailed in Appendix B. A photographic log of observations is presented in Appendix C. A 2006 summary prepared by others of reported significant natural features is provided as Appendix D.
