Indeed, from a position of relative obscurity when he arrived in New York in 1959, he went on to become one of contemporary jazz’s most prolific and commercially successful composers. The main focus of this dissertation will be Zawinul’s rise to prominence in American jazz during the 1960s and 1970s. -
A Journal for Contemporary Music (1971-1988)
Contact: A Journal for Contemporary Music (1971-1988) http://contactjournal.gold.ac.uk Citation Reynolds, Lyndon. 1975. ‘Miles et Alia’. Contact, 11. pp. 23-26. ISSN 0308-5066. ! [I] LYNDON REYNOLDS Ill Miles et Alia The list of musicians who have played with Miles Davis since 1966 contains a remarkable number of big names, including Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Tony Williams, Chick Corea, Joe Zawinul, Jack de Johnette, Dave Hol l and, John McLaughlin and Miroslav Vitous. All of these have worked success fully without Miles, and most have made a name for themselves whilst or since working with him. Who can say whether this is due to the limelight given them by playing alongside , Miles, the musical rewards of working with him, or Miles's talent-spotting abili- ties? Presumably the truth is a mixture of all these. What does Miles's music owe to the creative personalities of the musicians working with him? This question is unanswerable in practice, for one cannot quan- tify individual responsibility for a group product - assuming that is what Miles's music is. It is obvious that he has chosen very creative musicians with which to work, and yet there has often been an absence of conspicuous, individual, free solo playing in his music since about 1967. It would appear that Miles can absorb musical influences without losing his balance. What we find then, is a nexus of interacting musicians, centring on Miles; that is, musicians who not only play together in various other combinations, but influence each other as well. Even if the web could be disentangled (I know not how, save with a God's-eye-view), a systematic review of all the music that lies within it would be a task both vast and boring. -

Jazz Styles “Jazz” Is a Broad Genre That Includes Many Different Styles
Jazz Styles “Jazz” is a broad genre that includes many different styles. The activities in this pack will familiarize students, histori- cally and aurally, with the styles listed below. Present the information from the talking points that follow that best matches your students’ previous experiences and the focus of your lesson. Ragtime Ragtime is a piano-based jazz style that developed in the early 1900s and was popular for about 20 years. Ragtime has a two-beat rhythm that’s played in the left hand of the piano while the right hand plays “ragged rhythms” in the melody. Ragtime music was written down rather than improvised. The city of St. Louis is associated with the development of the ragtime style and some ragtime players include Scott Joplin, Ferdinand “Jelly Roll” Morton, and James P. Johnson. Blues The blues grew out of field hollers, work songs, and spirituals. It was originally a vocal style of jazz that expressed the challenges of a difficult life. Flatted third, fifth, and seventh scale degrees give blues its “blue” feeling. The 12- bar blues contains 3 four-measure phrases. The lyrics of the first two phrases usually state a problem and the third phrase resolves it in some manner. The singing style includes scooped and bent notes and the tempo is usually slow and expressive. A lot of the improvisation that is done in today’s jazz is based on the 12-bar blues formula. Memphis Blues, written by W.C. Handy in 1912, was one of the first blues pieces to be published. Bessie Smith was a famous blues singer who was popular in the 1930s. -

THE BASS PLAYERS of WEATHER REPORT by MARK STEVEN
FORECASTING FUSION AT LOW FREQUENCIES: THE BASS PLAYERS OF WEATHER REPORT by MARK STEVEN FRANDSEN, B.M., M.M. A DISSERTATION IN FINE ARTS Submitted to the Graduate Faculty of Texas Tech University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Approved Matthew Santa Chairperson of the Committee Christopher Smith Alan Shinn Jonathan Marks Carolyn Tate Accepted Fred Hartmeister Dean of the Graduate School January, 2010 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS There are many individuals to thank for their help and encouragement in completing this dissertation, but to name them all would fill another chapter. I do wish to pay special thanks to my advisor, mentor, and friend Matthew Santa for his support and encouragement throughout the entire process of writing and completing this project. Dr. Santa provided valuable insight and guidance from “across the pond” to keep me focused on the subject at hand while, at the same time, allowing me plenty of opportunities to follow my own path. I also wish to thank Christopher Smith for helping me focus my ideas during the inception of this paper, imparting increased knowledge about his article on improvisation in the Miles Davis groups, and introducing me to Christopher Small’s concept of “musicking.” I owe a special debt of gratitude to the living bass players of Weather Report : Miroslav Vitous, Alphonso Johnson, and Victor Bailey for their time and consideration in granting me interviews and answering questions about their respective times in the group. The experiences they shared and reflected on truly became the essence of this paper and reinforced the intangibles we encounter as musicians on a daily basis. -

Weather Report - Tale Spinnin' - The Audio Beat - www.TheAudioBeat.com 13.08.13 10:50 Music Reviews Weather Report • Tale Spinnin' Columbia/Speakers Corner PC 33417 180-gram LP 1975/2012 Music Sound by Guy Lemcoe | August 11, 2013 ale Spinnin' won Down Beat's best album award for 1975 -- the third Weather Report album to do so -- and provided the framework for the group's best-selling, award-winning Heavy Weather from 1977. It was Joe Zawinul’s composition "Birdland" from that album that served as my introduction to what was then called jazz fusion. Featuring the fleet-fingered, dancing bass of Jaco Pastorius and an infectious, hook-laden theme, "Birdland" set the standard for fusion’s future. I never truly warmed up to the idiom, or Weather Report itself for that matter, but I have returned occasionally for a listen in order to gain a deeper understanding of this music. Tale Spinnin’ has an outdoor, festive feel. Its music arises from street celebrations, animated conversations and wild, frantic dancing. Not surprisingly, a distinct undercurrent of funk permeates the proceedings, with the exciting drumming of Herbie Hancock’s former drummer, Leon "Ndugu" Chancler, and the bass of Alphonso Johnson. Multi Grammy winner Wayne Shorter demonstrates throughout this album, on both tenor and soprano saxophones, why he was (and still is -- he just released a new album, Without a Net, to coincide with his 80th birthday) one of the leading sax men in jazz history. The late Joe Zawinul shows he is a master of just about anything with a keyboard attached to it.
