Mr Chancellor, If you were to Google the name Peter Erskine you would find two eminent people of that name, both of about the same age and both decorated, in an earlier stage of their careers, by highly distinctive and yet virtually identical moustaches. One Peter Erskine is one of our great jazz musicians, the drummer who first achieved fame with the band Weather Report. The other is one of our great business leaders, the manager who was until recently Chairman and Chief Executive of the telephone company O2. Given the remarkable physical resemblance and given the meteorological and musical strengths of our University, there is scope for some confusion here, but it is the business leader I present to you today. From humble North-East London beginnings, Peter Erskine’s drive, enthusiasm and immense ability took him first, via a psychology degree at Liverpool, into a career in marketing. Following positions at Polycell and Colgate Palmolive and a substantial and successful stint at what is widely regarded as the world’s most sophisticated marketing company, Mars, he was headhunted in 1990 to be head of sales and marketing at a start-up mobile telephone company by the name of Unitel – known nowadays as T-mobile. Three years later he moved to British Telecom and by 1998 he was Managing Director of BT’s own mobile telephone arm, Cellnet. By 2001, following the de-merger and re-branding of the Cellnet business, he was Chief Executive Officer of what was then mmO2. Under Peter’s direction, O2 grew rapidly to become the largest and most successful mobile telephone operator in Britain, as well as in Ireland, Germany and the Czech Republic.

Indeed, from a position of relative obscurity when he arrived in New York in 1959, he went on to become one of contemporary jazz’s most prolific and commercially successful composers. The main focus of this dissertation will be Zawinul’s rise to prominence in American jazz during the 1960s and 1970s.

Contact: A Journal for Contemporary Music (1971-1988) http://contactjournal.gold.ac.uk Citation Reynolds, Lyndon. 1975. ‘Miles et Alia’. Contact, 11. pp. 23-26. ISSN 0308-5066. ! [I] LYNDON REYNOLDS Ill Miles et Alia The list of musicians who have played with Miles Davis since 1966 contains a remarkable number of big names, including Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Tony Williams, Chick Corea, Joe Zawinul, Jack de Johnette, Dave Hol l and, John McLaughlin and Miroslav Vitous. All of these have worked success fully without Miles, and most have made a name for themselves whilst or since working with him. Who can say whether this is due to the limelight given them by playing alongside , Miles, the musical rewards of working with him, or Miles's talent-spotting abili- ties? Presumably the truth is a mixture of all these. What does Miles's music owe to the creative personalities of the musicians working with him? This question is unanswerable in practice, for one cannot quan- tify individual responsibility for a group product - assuming that is what Miles's music is. It is obvious that he has chosen very creative musicians with which to work, and yet there has often been an absence of conspicuous, individual, free solo playing in his music since about 1967. It would appear that Miles can absorb musical influences without losing his balance. What we find then, is a nexus of interacting musicians, centring on Miles; that is, musicians who not only play together in various other combinations, but influence each other as well. Even if the web could be disentangled (I know not how, save with a God's-eye-view), a systematic review of all the music that lies within it would be a task both vast and boring.

CHICK COREA INTERVIEW by Eric Myers _____________________________________________________________ [This article appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald on February 24, 1982] espite all the talk about jazz becoming increasingly popular over the last ten years or so, the music has produced few superstars with a D genuine mass following. One of those few, however, is the American composer and pianist Chick Corea, who will perform two concerts with his quintet tonight at the Regent Theatre. US pianist/composer Chick Corea, one of the few jazz superstars with a genuine mass following: freedom to write his own tab… PHOTO CREDIT ALAN PURCELL SYDNEY MORNING HERALD 1 Corea served his apprenticeship during the 1960s with various bands, including the essential finishing-school for great modern jazz musicians, the Miles Davis group, which he joined in 1968. With ideas of incorporating rock rhythms into jazz, Corea formed his electronic ensemble, Return To Forever, in 1972, playing the kind of high-decibel jazz rock fusion music which had tremendous appeal to young people throughout the world. One version of Chick Corea’s group Return To Forever, L-R, Lenny White (drums), Corea (keyboards), Al Di Meola (guitar), Stanley Clarke (bass)… By 1976, when the group disbanded, Chick Corea had become one of the biggest drawcards in jazz. Some people see overwhelming popular acceptance as inimical to the spirit of jazz. Has Chick Corea's huge commercial success (including five Grammy awards) hindered his development as an artist? "So far as recognition by the public is concerned, it has certainly provided me with a channel through which I can communicate with humanity, which is actually one of my goals in life," he says.

As with 2016, the year 2017 was a bit on the lean side as far as reviews go of box sets, books and DVDs - it appears tht the days of mass quantities of boxed sets are over - but we do have some to check out.
