It's not just a remake, // Weigh-Ins for UFC 129: St-Pierre but a remake to a 1981 film that has gained a tremendous cult following. This film vs Shields To Be Held in Toronto was made on a $7 million budget and made the most of its small amount of money, giving it a unique look and charm that stands the test of time. It was directed and GAMES co-written by John Carpenter, a man who just three years before, re-invented the // New Mortal Kombat Trailer for horror genre by creating the character of Michael Myers in Halloween. Shang Tsung Advertisement After the success of Halloween, Carpenter pulled out an old script for a science- fiction / action film that was also a western. Well, it wasn't set in the Old West or anything, but the main character was someone with a very obscure past and is sent into a very dangerous town to save the day. When the script was greenlit, Carpenter brought in a former Disney actor named Kurt Russell and together, the two of them created one of the most iconic anti-heroes in film history: Snake Plissken. The film that made Snake Plissken and Kurt Russell famous: There's a very basic plot to this film, which leaves Carpenter and co-writer Nick Castle plenty of time to explore the strange landscape and characters that populate the burned out New York City. Here's a quick rundown of what happened, according to the opening narration. In 1988, the crime in the United States rose 400 percent. To accommodate all of the captured criminals, the island of Manhattan has been sealed off from the rest of the country and turned into the world's largest maximum security prison. The United States Police Force, like an army, keeps watch over every border. The bridges are mined, the rivers are patrolled. The rules are simple: once you go in, you don't come out. Now, in the year 1997, the President of the United States (Donald Pleasence) is flying to a summit when Air Force One is hijacked by a terrorist that aims the plane at one of the buildings in New York. The President gets out with the help of his emergency escape pod just as the plane crashes, and as soon as he lands, he is kidnapped by a group of thugs and delivered to the top dog in the city: The Duke of New York (Isaac Hayes). MOVIE REVIEWS The only course of action that the United States Police Force sees is to recruit a newly convicted thief named Snake Plissken to go into the city, find the President and get him out alive for his summit. Fortunately for them, Plissken's not an ordinary convict. He's a war hero, a recipient of two purple hearts, and the youngest man to be decorated by the President. To keep him in line, the Commissioner of the US Police 1 av 4 2011-04-08 01:53 411mania.com: Movies - Scene Anatomy 101: Escape from New York http://www.411mania.com/movies/columns/55389/Scene-Anatomy-101... // Insidious Review Force Bob Hauk (Lee Van Cleef) has two capsules injected into Plissken that detonate a lethal charge after 24 hours. After he is spotted in a theater by a cabbie named, well, Cabbie (Ernest Borgnine) – he's the first in the film to say the now-famous line: "I heard you were dead" – he is given some shelter by a girl in a Chock-Full-of-Nuts store (good thing she // Paul Review was there too since her character's name is "Girl in Chock-Full-of-Nuts"), gets past a gang of nutjobs that look like they're left behind from The Warriors, and is eventually rescued by Cabbie. // Battle: Los Angeles Review Cabbie offers Snake a ride to get what he needs, and what he needs is information about the President. Cabbie immediately tells Snake that // Drive Angry 3D Review the Duke's got the President, so Snake tells him he wants to meet him. Snake slowly steps forward and gives his answer. The way Snake responds is in the exact same fashion that Clint Eastwood would have answered as "The Man with No Name," another hint that John Carpenter always looked at this film as a western at heart. SNAKE: I wanna meet the Duke. Maggie opens the door and Cabbie and Snake walk inside. Cabbie is talking Snake's ear off as they descend down the stairs. CABBIE: Hey, you remember this place, Snake? It used to be the public library. Oh, that Brain. He's the greatest. Mr. Fabulous! The Duke loves him. Snake motions towards Maggie, who's walking further away from the two. SNAKE: Who's that? CABBIE: That's Maggie, Brain's squeeze. The Duke gave her to Brain just to keep him happy. See what I mean? Snake and Cabbie catch up with Maggie. She doesn't even look back to acknowledge him, but instead she says something that Snake had to be tired of hearing by now. MAGGIE: Heard you were dead. Maggie, Snake and Cabbie walk into the main room. A man is sitting by himself in the corner of the room. This is Brain (Harry Dean Stanton). MAGGIE: Brain? CABBIE: Brain, I brought somebody to see you. Snake walks closer to Brain. He immediately recognizes him, but not under his current nickname. SNAKE: Harold Helman. Brain immediately realizes who is in front of him and a chill goes up his spine. BRAIN: Snake? Maggie looks at Brain, confused. Snake almost cracks a smile as he walks closer to Brain. SNAKE: How you been, Harold? It's been a long time. MAGGIE: You never told me you knew Snake Plissken, Brain. Cabbie immediately interrupts. He can tell the situation is getting a little tense and tries to change the subject. CABBIE: Isn't that great? Hey, Brain, I could use some gas if you could spare some. But Snake's not finished talking. He feels the urge to remind Brain of what he was before crossing the border into New York City.

Jaume Balagueró & Paco Plaza) S pain 2007 Odeon Sky Filmworks In 1965, at the height of the Cold War, Susan Sontag declared in her famous essay ‘The Imagination of Disaster’ that the world had entered an “age of extremity” in which it had become clear that from now until the end of human history, every person on earth would “spend his individual life under the threat not only of individual death, which is certain, but of something almost insupportable psychologically – collective incineration which could come at any time”. Sontag went on to claim that narratives in which this fate was dramatised for the mass audience in fantastical form – like the monster movies of the 1950s – helped society deal with this stress by distracting people from their fate and normalising what was psychologically unbearable: a kind of vaccination of the imagination, if you will. If this is the case, then Cloverfield, in which Manhattan is destroyed by an immensely powerful sea monster, George A. Romero’s latest zombie movie, Diary of the Dead, and claustrophobic Spanish hit [Rec] are not so much preemptive vaccinations against probable catastrophe, but intermittently powerful, if flawed, reminders of actual calamity. In all three films some of the most destabilising events and anxieties of the past decade – including 9/11 (and the fear of terrorist attacks striking at the heart of American and European cities), Hurricane Katrina, the 2004 Tsunami, and the SARS virus– are reconfigured as genrebased mass market entertainment.

  • It Was the City Killed the Beast” 1
“It Was the City Killed the Beast” 1 “It Was the City Killed the Beast:” Nature, Technophobia, and the Cinema of the Urban Future James A. Clapp You have nowhere to go. The last line spoken in George Lucas’s THX 1138 N the 1951 movie The Day the Earth Stood Still, a single alien visitor and his powerful robot land their saucer-shaped space- ship in a park in Washington, D.C. To demonstrate technological Isuperiority, they turn off all electrical and mechanical power on Earth, illustrated in a montage of cities brought to a halt by stalled modes of communications and transportation. The message of the film is that unless humans find a way to live peacefully with one another—the film was made during the days of the Cold War when atomic weapons proliferated in the United States and the USSR—even more techno- logically advanced aliens might have to step in like parents among squabbling children and slap some sense into them. Klaatu, the alien, played by Michael Rennie in an aluminum foil suit, is a rather messianic figure backed up by an eight-foot Cyclopean robot that can incinerate anything with its ray-gun eye. He has been sent by a federation of Earth’s galactic neighbors to tell us to get our act together and to show us what might happen if we do not. Although Klaatu is on a peace mission, he does not hesitate to have his robot, Gort, take out a few tanks and soldiers when they get too militaristic and wound Klaatu.

  • The 15Th International Gothic Association Conference A
The 15th International Gothic Association Conference Lewis University, Romeoville, Illinois July 30 - August 2, 2019 Speakers, Abstracts, and Biographies A NICOLE ACETO “Within, walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut”: The Terror of Domestic Femininity in Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House Abstract From the beginning of Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House, ordinary domestic spaces are inextricably tied with insanity. In describing the setting for her haunted house novel, she makes the audience aware that every part of the house conforms to the ideal of the conservative American home: walls are described as upright, and “doors [are] sensibly shut” (my emphasis). This opening paragraph ensures that the audience visualizes a house much like their own, despite the description of the house as “not sane.” The equation of the story with conventional American families is extended through Jackson’s main character of Eleanor, the obedient daughter, and main antagonist Hugh Crain, the tyrannical patriarch who guards the house and the movement of the heroine within its walls, much like traditional British gothic novels. Using Freud’s theory of the uncanny to explain Eleanor’s relationship with Hill House, as well as Anne Radcliffe’s conception of terror as a stimulating emotion, I will explore the ways in which Eleanor is both drawn to and repelled by Hill House, and, by extension, confinement within traditional domestic roles. This combination of emotions makes her the perfect victim of Hugh Crain’s prisonlike home, eventually entrapping her within its walls. I argue that Jackson is commenting on the restriction of women within domestic roles, and the insanity that ensues when women accept this restriction.
