San Francisco: William Doxey 1895. 8vo (5 1/8 x 7 1/2”), pictorial wraps, [16]p., two clean margin mends and edge chipping, still a better than good copy of this fragile book. This is the first separate edition of Burgess’ first published book and is the 1st state which is printed on rough textured paper on both sides of the page. Because the textured paper was difficult to print on, later copies were printed on smooth paper on one side of the page only. Illustrated in black to accompany nonsense rhymes including the now famous Purple Cow. Although Burgess is well known for his Goop series of children’s books, he was also a dedicated avant guard figure of his time. Amongst other accomplishments, he was the first to introduce Cubism to the United States in an article he wrote about his interviews with Matisse, Picasso and Braque.
