Additional scientific studies were funded by the BGS. The general site at Castle Hill, and more specifically South Toll House Cliff, is a geological Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) as designated by Natural England. It provides an excellent section through the Middle and Upper Jurassic succession of the upper Osgodby Formation and overlying Oxford Clay Formation. Furthermore, the site is of significant current and historical scientific interest as it was studied and extensively collected down to the sea-level (prior to the construction of Marine Drive) by pioneering geologists who established the ammonite biostratigraphy of the Callovian to Oxfordian sucession in the Cleveland (Yorkshire) Basin. The lower exposures have not been visible since the late 19th century, hence the importance of recording the site investigation borehole cores and the geology exposed during shaft excavations. The scientific results of the site investigation boreholes at the Toll House shaft site are integrated in the report with information obtained during the incremental excavation of the shaft to ca. -20 m OD depth, together with additional borehole data from the surrounding Castle Hill area. Now taking the train from Bempton railway station (Flamborough railway station, originally named Marton, closed on the 5th January 1970) on the Hull Scarborough line, also known as the Yorkshire Coast line built in 1845, we travels past Speeton railway station which opened on 20th October 1847 and closed on 5th January 1970. The station building and the adjacent platform are still in place. Then on to Humanby and Filey both railway stations are still open today. The Dogger Formation is of ‘earliest’ Aalenian age and is correlative with the uppermost Dunlin Group, Drake Formation and Båt Group, Ror Formation. The overly- ing Aalenian Saltwick and Eller Beck formations correlate with the Brent Group, Broom–Rannoch–Etive–Ness and the Fangst Group, Ile–Not–‘lower’ Garn genetic packages. The Cloughton Formation is either unrepresented or condensed in the Brent Province and Mid-Norway due to a regional unconformity, which truncates lower Bajocian sediments. The Scarborough Formation is of ‘latest’ early to ‘earliest’ late Bajocian age and correlative with the older part of the Tarbert–Heather and the ‘upper’ Garn–Melke genetic packages. These interpretations contrast markedly with the majority of those published. Introduction At its peak in the mid 1870s-mid 1880s the ironstone industries in the area (alongside the remainder of the Cleveland Hills) provided 38% of Britain’s need for iron, which equated to 20% of world demand. The area contributed to the shifting industries in North East England and the establishment of Middlesbrough as a centre of iron-making and its impact on the nation and the world beyond. Iron was in much demand - investment in construction of railways, in Britain and abroad started around 1835 and continued apace for the next three decades creating a significant demand for rails made from iron. In 1835 ironstone was first identified and the first underground ironstone mining commenced in the Cleveland Hills ironstone mining district. Ironstone was identified in stream near tunnel works at Grosmont when building the new railway between Whitby and Pickering and was subsequently worked along the Murk Esk Valley at Beck Hole and Esk Valley, then at Kildale. In 1853 a magnetic ironstone with a significantly high iron content was discovered in Rosedale.

Terraces and channels, most of which are now relict features well above the altitude of the present river, attest to the impacts of massive meltwater discharge and deposition of sand and gravel outwash, and dynamic river regimes with rapid incision.
