Much of the present landscape had been influenced by three major factors: the creation of Haveragh Park in the 12th century, the of land and the construction of Penny Pot Lane turnpike road in the late 18th century and the creation of Beaver Dyke Reservoirs in the 1860s. The study site to the south of John of Gaunt's Castle had been occupied since at least the early 17th century and probably before. The existing structures and features surviving on the surface represented the remains of the 18th century farmstead and later mid-19th century buildings. The discovery of sub-surface archaeology was possible or other such structures, perhaps also relating to John of Gaunt's castle. [Au(adp)]

A cultural heritage assessment, which accompanied a planning application to use an area currently under pasture as a borrow pit in connection with the ongoing improvement works to the adjacent A66 road some 2km west of its junction with the A1, was carried out. The assessment identified six sites of local significance and one site of possible regional significance that would be directly impacted by the proposed development. One buried site of national importance, a section of the Scot's Dike, an early medieval earthwork, lay sufficiently close to the western site boundary that its setting would be visually impacted by the development. It was concluded that the area contained remains of sufficient significance to warrant mitigation by avoidance and preservation in situ. The only regionally significant site to be impacted by the development was a trackway and field boundary marking territorial divisions between Melsonby and Middleton Tyas townships/parishes and between Gilling West and Gilling East wapentakes. The northern section was heavily quarried. Cliff cottage was constructed between 1819 and 1839 and there was no evidence of earlier properties built on the site. Stables Wood was part of an area of seigniorial enclosure enacted by the Lords of Barnburgh prior to the 1819 parliamentary . The site was named as an Ancient Wood in 1819. There was evidence of coppicing during the 20th century. There were no Anglo-Saxon remains evident, however, the village name (Mexborough) suggested that it was founded pre- as part of a chain of defensive sites established near the Rivers Don and Dearne. The site of the later motte and bailey castle lay approximately 900m east of the site was likely to be that of the original pre-Norman fort. However, it was concluded that the site had a low potential for archaeological remains and therefore no further investigation was suggested. [Au(adp)]

An archaeological desk-based assessment concluded that any development would impact significantly on archaeology dating from the prehistoric period onwards. In particular, the known archaeological remains dating to the Roman, Saxon and medieval periods were of local and regional importance. The defences of the Roman fort and Anglo-Saxon burgh were projected to run directly through the proposed development area. The close proximity to the churchyard of St. Mary Magdalene increased the potential for the discovery human burials. [Au(adp)]

No prehistoric remains were known from within the development area. However, two prehistoric sites of national importance were situated close to the site to the immediate north-east and east. A Mesolithic site was excavated just to the north-east of the site in 1962. The excavation revealed two concentric rings of stone, which were interpreted as a possible structure. A total of 36,000 flint flakes and a large amount of flint tools were also recovered. Adjacent to the eastern boundary of the site was the Scheduled Ancient Monument of Wharncliffe Quern Workings. Many quern working sites and querns had been identified above and below Wharncliffe Scar and related to intensive workings that appeared to date from the Iron Age to Roman periods. There was little information regarding the area for the Saxon and medieval periods. The eastern part of the site may have been part of the Wortley Estates in the post-medieval period. By the mid 19th century the northern part of the site was occupied by a chemical works, which was taken over by John Grayson Lowood in c.1860 and became Lowoods Gannister and Brick Works, later General Refractories and latterly RG Stein Brickworks. All the buildings relating to the brickworks had already been demolished. Parts of the site have also been used as landfill by Corus. Most of the eastern site had been heavily disturbed by the brickworks and landfill, and although there may have been islands of undisturbed ground, especially close to the river, these areas being retained as "public open spaces". The small area on the western bank of the River Don had, apart from a pipeline running across it, not been disturbed and the greatest potential for the survival of archaeological remains lay here. Cultural Heritage Scoping Study Northern Archaeological Associates Barnard Castle : Northern Archaeological Associates, 2006, 17pp, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Northern Archaeological Associates There was not thought to be a great deal of impact to the archaeological record, partly due to the pipeline's proposed location within the track bed of a railway. Three short sections of the pipeline would be through farmland, and there was a slight chance of encountering archaeological remains. Monitoring of the groundwork was proposed as mitigation. There was evidence that the course of a Roman road bisected the site and cropmarks indicated the presence of probable later prehistoric or Romano-British settlement activity in at least three locations. The study area was widely settled during the medieval period and substantial settlements were at Wickes, East Keswick and East Rigton. The proposed works would impact upon four recorded sites, including a later Prehistoric or Romano-British Archaeological Investigations Project 2006 Desk-based Assessment Yorkshire & Humberside settlement and former field boundaries, extant ridge and furrow and a hollow way dating back to enclosure and possibly originating in the medieval period. Other sites included a later prehistoric or Romano-British settlement identified from cropmarks and surface finds and the site of a possible Roman villa at Biggin Farm. [Au(abr)]

There was also evidence for human occupation of the Methley area in the Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age periods. Medieval pottery and other material had been found in the vicinity and a known medieval farmstead existed to the south of the site. Medieval and post-medieval field systems and ridge and furrow cultivation was in the vicinity. [Au(adp)]

The first came in the 19th century when the area of the medieval deer park was divided and sold off. At this time, the site consisted of large houses and surrounding grounds, which later were built over during the 20th century. [Au(adp)]

A ring ditch identified as a cropmark from aerial photographs was the only archaeological feature within the confines of the development site, and was thought to be the remains of a Bronze Age barrow. It was suggested that a walkover survey of the site and a geophysical survey of the ring ditch be carried out in order to assess the possible extent of any archaeological remains. [Au(adp)]

An archaeological desk-based assessment was carried out at the Manor School site. The study site was enclosed by field boundaries laid out during the late 18th century. There was no archaeological documentary or cartographic evidence for early activity within the area of proposed development. No formal archaeological investigation of this area had previously been undertaken and cartographic sources prior to the mid-19th century were scarce. There was a possibility for the presence of sub- surface archaeology. Analysis of aerial photographs identified extensive evidence of medieval activity and possible Iron Age occupation within the study area and there was potential for the discovery of archaeological deposits of these periods within the area of proposed development.
