Desk-based Cultural Heritage Assessment Northern Archaeological Associates Barnard Castle : Northern Archaeological Associates, 2006, 14pp, colour pls, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Northern Archaeological Associates The proposed development was not predicted to have a direct physical impact upon any of the recorded cultural heritage sites within the study area, however, there was the potential for previously unknown sites to be uncovered during development. Where any impacts were predicted on Scheduled Ancient Monuments and Listed buildings, the effects were thought to be both negligible and temporary. Final report the environment agency preston : the environment agency, 2006, 38pp, figs, refs Work undertaken by: Environment Agency An archaeological desk-based assessment was carried out and revealed a total of 48 recorded potential archaeological and historical sites within the study area. Although there were no Scheduled Archaeological Investigations Project 2006 Desk-based Assessment Yorkshire & Humberside Monuments, there were ten Grade II Listed buildings in the study area, along with a small portion of the Long Preston Conservation Area. There was a low to moderate spread of medieval agricultural archaeology over the site. The potential for buried remains was very high in some areas. A rapid walkover survey indicated that there was a high potential for archaeological remains. Much of the present landscape had been influenced by three major factors: the creation of Haveragh Park in the 12th century, the enclosure of land and the construction of Penny Pot Lane turnpike road in the late 18th century and the creation of Beaver Dyke Reservoirs in the 1860s. The study site to the south of John of Gaunt's Castle had been occupied since at least the early 17th century and probably before. The existing structures and features surviving on the surface represented the remains of the 18th century farmstead and later mid-19th century buildings. The discovery of sub-surface archaeology was possible or other such structures, perhaps also relating to John of Gaunt's castle.
