Johansen, transport economist and including: Messrs. G. Orsini, road engineer D. Raymond, port specialist which visited the Comoros in March 1977. The report was revised for publication on the basis of discussionswith the Comorian gov- ernment and an economic review in December 1978 by Mr. S. Rahim.     24 Fishery Exports and the Economic Development of LDCs: Chapter 6 Case study: Comoros Overview The Comoros is an island nation in the Indian Ocean, off the coast of East Africa, with a total population of about 734,900 in 2013 (World Bank, 2017a). Following independence in 1975, the country experienced a number of changes of Government; political stability has improved since 2009, enhancing prospects for economic development. As in many African LDCs, the population is young, and creating remunerative employment opportunities for new entrants to the labour force is a major challenge. Fishing is the second most important sector of the economy after agriculture, accounting in 2013 for 10 per cent of employment and 8 per cent of GDP (Cofrepeche et al., 2013). The share of the fishing sector in GDP decreased from 15 per cent in 2010 to 8 per cent in 2013, indicating the informal and subsistence nature of the sector and its vulnerability to shocks. The poverty reduction and growth strategy of the Government for 2010–2014 prioritized the sector (International Monetary Fund, 2010). Artisanal and industrial fishing at present operate entirely separately, to a greater extent even than in most LDCs. All domestic fishing operations are artisanal, and industrial fishing is fully conducted by distant water fishing nations. Foreign vessels, mainly purse seine vessels from France and Spain, fish offshore for several varieties of tuna and swordfish. Fish caught by distant water fishing nations are not landed in the Comoros due to the lack of infrastructure and processing facilities, and there are no exports from domestic fishers.

Did you know that Chanel No. 5’s essence (essential oils) comes from the flower called ylang-ylang, which is found in the African country of Comoros? Comoros is also where the so-called “living fossils”, a rare pre-historic species of fish called coelacanths, discovered in 1938 in South Africa after having thought to be extinct, are mostly found. So this time I would like to introduce the country of Comoros, fascinating like Marilyn Monroe and a little mysterious like the coelacanths. Table 1: Comoros Country Information The Union of the Comoros is an archipelago island nation located off the coast of East Africa east of Mozambique and northwest from Madagascar. 4 main islands make up the Comoros archipelago, Grande Comore, Moheli, Anjouan and Mayotte, with Grande Comore, Moheli, and Anjouan forming the Union of Comoros and Mayotte falling under French jurisdiction as an ‘overseas department” or region. The population of the 3 islands making up the Union of the Comoros is about 800,000, while their total land area comes to 2,236 square kilometers, about the same land size as Tokyo, which makes it quite a small country. Nominal GDP is roughly $600 million, which is second from the bottom among the 45 sub-Saharan African countries, just above Sao Tome and Principe, and its population is the 5th lowest (note 1).

    From the Indian Ocean to the Pacific: Affranchis and Petits- Blancs in New Caledonia Karin Speedy, Macquarie University The sugar crisis of 1860 in the Indian Ocean island of Réunion motivated the migration of thousands of Réunionnais to New Caledonia in the Pacific. Along with sugar planters, wealthy enough to transport their production equipment as well as their indentured workers, significant groups of both skilled and unskilled labourers made their way from Réunion to the Pacific colony in the second half of the nineteenth century. In previous publications, I have focused my attention on the sugar industry and the immigration of the rich planters and their coolies.1 While I have drawn attention to the heterogeneity of the sugar workers and have signalled the arrival and numeric importance of tradespeople, manual and low skilled workers from Réunion, I have not yet described these immigrants in detail. This is because this group has been largely ignored by history and details surrounding their circumstances are scant. In this paper, I discuss the background and origins of these people and highlight some of the fascinating stories to emerge from this migration to New Caledonia and beyond. From the earliest days of French settlement, immigrants from the Indian Ocean island of Réunion settled in New Caledonia. These ‘pioneers’ were generally involved in agricultural activities, laying the foundations for the sugar and coffee industries that would attract many of their compatriots in the coming years.
