Early occupants of Meadow Studio are known historically to be Frank Wright Bourdillon, George Sherwood Hunter and perhaps more famously Norman Garstin whilst Anchor Studio became the founding studio of the Newlyn School of Artists and its founder Stanhope Alexander Forbes. Positioned in the very heart of the Newlyn School of Arts historic artist’s studios and cottages, enjoying incredible elevated views from almost every room in the house across Newlyn Harbour and much of Mounts Bay. Set at the end of a long private driveway that only gives access to three other properties and positioned directly opposite the studio once used by world renowned artist Stanhope Forbes. To the lower ground floor there is a now self-contained one bedroomed garden level apartment that has served very well as extended family accommodation but could also be used to generate a lettings income if desired. The apartment still enjoys the views to the sea over the garden and has an area of hard landscaped sun terrace accessed via twin opening French doors which looks beyond the artist’s studio to the sea. On the southern side of the house is a good sized area of garden with lawns, apple tree, pear trees and an old medlar. The rear of this garden is retained by a beautiful stone wall and in addition there is a shed/workshop – 14’ x 8’. Beautiful kitchen/breakfast room of a good size and filled with light through a feature Crittall bay window which has views that look over the gardens towards Newlyn and out to sea, white painted handmade wall and base units, beech worksurfaces and a duck egg blue Aga, stripwood flooring. 4 Ref: LCAA6334 Impressive main and expansive sitting room with stripwood flooring, a huge box bay window with window seat giving an outlook over the gardens towards Newlyn Harbour and St Michael’s Mount, further feature Crittall bay window with views and high ceilings. A superb and light filled master bedroom currently used as an artist’s studio that sits above the main reception room on the ground floor and having similar proportions. This room has panoramic views and is bathed in beautiful light through a large box bay window again with window seating and a further enormous feature Crittall bay window and additional further window to the side. On this floor are two further bedrooms (1 double and 1 single) with the double bedroom again benefitting from really quite remarkable views. There is a detached single garage which is accessed off Belle Vue and lies about 2 minutes’ walk away. A rare opportunity likely to be of particular appeal and interest to artisans with appreciation for the famous Newlyn School of Artists. HISTORICAL NOTE - with regards to the history of Meadow Studio’s origins with the Newlyn School of Painters. The colony of artists who were attracted to work in Newlyn between the 1880’s and the early 20th Century became internationally renowned as the “Newlyn School of Painters”. Meadow Studio and its neighbour, Anchor Studio (now Grade II listed), were constructed in circa 1889 specifically to provide substantial studio space for the early artists. The original construction and design included glazed extensions to maximise the quality of natural light. Interestingly both Meadow Studio and Anchor Studio were built with generous sponsorship from a benefactor, Mr Bateman, who happened to own The Meadow at the time (early tenants of Meadow Studio are known to be Frank Wright Bourdillon (b.1859, d.1919) and Norman Garstin (b.1847, d.1926), whose most famous works include ‘The Rain it Raineth Every Day’, showing Penzance promenade on a rainy day. Another artist George Sherwood Hunter (b.1846, d.1919), owned Meadow Studio and approximately half of Bateman’s Meadow, while the other part of The Meadow and Anchor Studio came into the ownership of Stanhope Alexander Forbes who, along with his wife Elizabeth, later founded the Newlyn School of Artists in Anchor Studio around 1899. Over time The Meadow with its studios and views out over the harbour and Mounts Bay, became a focal meeting place for the artists working in Newlyn during this period. 5 Ref: LCAA6334 Whilst owned by George Sherwood Hunter Meadow Studio was described in Stanhope Alexander Forbes’ biography of 1906 as: ‘a perfect treasure-house of beautiful and interesting work’. In 1924 the original glass extensions were removed and the property was extended to include living accommodation. However, the two studio rooms remain intact to this day and serve currently as a fantastic main reception room on the ground floor and has a master bedroom/artist’s studio on the first floor. LOCATION Meadow Studio sits within Newlyn’s conservation area and was originally surrounded by the studio’s used by the Newlyn School of Painters. As you approach the property the Trewarveneth Studio is on the right hand side and this has been completely renovated in 2007 to recreate six artists’ studios. At the end of the driveway that leads to Meadow Studio you will find Anchor Studio which was built in the 1880’s, and is the last remaining studio from the Newlyn School still in its original layout. This Grade II Listed building is still used by a local artist today. The area abounds with architecturally interesting period homes with delightful slate roofs and stone elevations giving a feel that is only helped by the size and beauty of the surrounding sub tropical gardens, including those in the ownership of Meadow Studio. Newlyn is very much a busy fishing harbour with a working fleet and also provides good local amenities which cater for daily requirements including Stevensons and Trelawney fresh fish shops, a fish market, post office, bank, chemist, art galleries, school, community centre, gym, greengrocer, various public houses and cafés. Virtually connected to Newlyn, is the famous town of Penzance, renowned for its mild climate and known as the capital of West Penwith. Whilst Newlyn has a larger fishing fleet, Penzance’s bustling harbour is a haven for yachts and the Scillonian Ferry which gives access to the Isles of Scilly. There is also a mainline rail terminus at Penzance with a regular service to London Paddington and Penzance also offers all the amenities expected of such a central town including a hospital. West Penwith is known for its clarity of light, stunning rugged beauty and picture postcard coves and villages. Only a couple of miles along the coast from Newlyn is Mousehole with its nationally renowned Christmas lights and the Minack Theatre can be found on the way to Land’s End. The area has a plethora of superb beaches, with St Ives Bay offering around 4 miles of open sand.
