Trauma, Dissociation, and Amnesia: Myths and Reality in Cinema and Life A look at the psychological responses to trauma that include dissociation and amnesia, phenomena which are often misunderstood in the media and public perception. After looking at models that explain common responses to trauma, including post-traumatic stress, traumatic amnesia, and dissociative identity disorder (formerly called multiple personality disorder), we will screen five films that portray these conditions in various contexts. All are Hollywood produced. The stories have sometimes been manipulated to add drama so as to appeal to popular audiences, which is one of the dynamics this course will examine. Session 1 / Jan 31, 2020: Lecture/discussion: An overview of the mechanisms and dynamic of memory and the ways in which it is subject to traumatic distortion, dissociations and episodes of amnesia. We will focus on understanding dissociative and amnestic responses to trauma as defensive and self-protective mechanisms. When seen in this context, behaviors that often seem bizarre begin to make sense. TRANSCRIPT A PINEWOOD DIALOGUE WITH SIDNEY LUMET Sidney Lumet’s critically acclaimed 2007 film Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead, a dark family comedy and crime drama, was the latest triumph in a remarkable career as a film director that began 50 years earlier with 12 Angry Men and includes such classics as Serpico, Dog Day Afternoon, and Network. Shepard became a Pulitzer Prize winning playwright (Buried Child) and an Academy Award-nominated actor (THE RIGHT STUFF), while Dark was a homebody who supported himself with odd jobs. Through the decades, they stayed bonded by family ties. Dark married an older woman named Scarlett and Shepard married her daughter. For years, the two couples lived together, until Shepard broke away for a relationship with Jessica Lange in 1983, leaving Johnny to help father his first son. Nevertheless, he and Dark continued writing to each other, amassing hundreds of letters. Director Treva Wurmfeld began filming the two friends in 2010 during a period of transition and reflection for Shepard. At the time, he had quietly ended his relationship with Lange and agreed to publish his correspondence with Dark. The task required them to meet and sift through years of their shared history, stirring memories both good and bad. -

The Life and Times of Jimmy Hoffa Abstract In light of Martin Scorsese's popular movie "The Irishman," it is a good time to reassess Jimmy Hoffa. He's probably the most famous union leader in American history, but the only thing most people know of him is that he ran the Teamsters and was closely connected to the Mafia. He is often seen as nothing but a corrupt, evil, greedy sellout. The reality is a little different. In this article I discuss his record as a labor leader, the attacks on him by the McClellan Committee and Bobby Kennedy, and his ties to organized crime. I try to contextualize the Teamsters union of Hoffa's era, while at the same time providing a corrective to the public's overwhelmingly negative views of him. -

Wriston (1919–2005), banker, author, government adviser, and member of the Manhattan Institute’s board of trustees. The Wriston Lecture has since been presented annually in New York City with honorees drawn from the worlds of government, academia, religion, business, and the arts.
