Enkele jaren geleden stal Travelport Studiereis: Montclar, sneeuw onder de zon 17 zowat overal de show met zijn betalingsfiliale e-nett dat het nu ten gelde maakt via een TUI Experience Trip Ski 18-19 monsterdeal met Wex, het prominente Amerikaans financieel-technologisch bedrijf, - en dit Serie: Digitale Economie: mobile travel trends 2020 20 voor zo’n 1,7 miljard dollar. Ondertussen breken er cruciale maanden aan voor diverse airline groepen. IAG – de groep rond BA en Iberia – wacht op groen licht van én de Europese én Spaanse anti-trust overheden voor het binnenhalen van Air Europa (onderdeel van de familiale Globalia groep). Verder blijven vele vragen over hoe de nieuwe groep rond het Poolse LOT – net als LH 22-28 lid van de Star Alliance – zal omgaan met de Duitse vakantie airline Condor (de deal moet eind april afgerond zijn). Wat gebeurt er verder tegen eind mei met Alitalia na de zoveelste reddingsboei van de Italiaanse overheid nu Delta, na een 20% aandelenpakket van Latam binnengehaald te hebben, toch geïnteresseerd blijft in de nationale Italiaanse carrier (en zijn peperdure slots in Milaan). Opvallend in de marge van de Brexit-deal is hoe de Britse regering eind september geen hand uitstak naar de wankelende Thomas Cook groep, maar nu met Brits belastinggeld de carrier Flybe van de ondergang redt (niet toevallig verzorgt Flybe – electoraal interessant – meer dan © Caractère 80% van alle binnenlandse vluchten in de UK) en kan Europa – na de Brexit – niet meer ingrijpen. Ook de Chinese ex-grootaandeelhouder van Thomas Cook, Fosun, wil straks nog vóór de zomer Thomas Cook Cruises: recordaantal nieuwe cruiseschepen 30-31 als online portaal nieuw leven inblazen in de UK, terwijl de Turkse Anex-groep rond entrepreneur Neset Kockar, ijzersterk in Rusland ook dankzij o.a. de Intourist-overname, in Duitsland een nieuwe start neemt met de ex-T.C. filialen Bucher en Öger Tours. Dit alles tegen een wereldwijde achtergrond van dringende luchtvaart- en toerisme uitdagingen, zoals klimaatneutraliteit, vliegschaamte, klantendatagebruik, mobiliteitsproblematiek, CO2- uitstoot, vliegtuigbelastingen, LNG-cruiseschepen en bovenal keiharde internationale competitie waardoor op alle niveaus de prijsdruk (ook voor de eerdere succesvolle OTA’s), ondanks een continue consolidatiegolf, nog eerder toe- dan afneemt. Voor velen blijft de ultieme lakmoesproef in een nieuwe Europese ‘green deal’ nog altijd de realisatie van een Single European Sky project (SES) wat automatisch de milieuvriendelijkheid 33-35 © TUI van de luchtvaart zou verhogen en de emissie uitstoot dramatisch doen dalen! Vanaf de middag kon je overal op de beursvloer wel ergens van een receptie of een borrel genieten, al werd er door de organisatie bewust gekozen voor een aanpak met meer beleving. Op de Vakdag waren iets meer dan 12.000 bezoekers aanwezig en deze trok duidelijk meer studenten aan door de organi- satie van ‘Travel Talent’, waarbij de studenten contacten konden leggen met ervaren rotten uit de toerisme-sector. De deelnemers aan onze charter werden dan weer zeer gastvrij onthaald op de stand van Sunny Cars – met heerlijke barista-koffi e, stroopwafels, croissants en de aller- beste gevulde koeken – terwijl NMBS Internationaal voor de vlotte verplaatsingen en de tickets in Thalys Première De deelnemers aan de Vakantiebeurs-charter, gesponsord zorgde. VAKVERENIGING ABTO Nieuwjaarsreceptie Op 8 januari verzamelden zo’n 200 reisprofessionals zich in de b.House in Zaventem voor de jaarlijkse nieuwjaarsreceptie van ABTO, georganiseerd met de steun van Brussels Airlines en de Toeristische Dienst van de Dominicaanse Republiek. ABTO-voorzitter Luc Coussement blikte terug op een opmerkelijk 2019 en schetste de toekomst voor 2020. “2019 was in vele opzichten een opmerkelijk jaar, met het verdwijnen van Thomas Cook, de ruime aandacht voor het klimaat, en de nieuwe reiswet die haar eerste volle jaar in de praktijk erop heeft zitten. Het was een jaar waarin meer dan ooit de fl exibiliteit van het georganiseerde reizen op de proef werd gesteld, maar ook het jaar waarin we onze kracht hebben getoond,” aldus Luc Coussement. De ABTO Star ging dit jaar naar de Belgian Travel Summit. ABTO STAR Tijdens de Nieuwjaarsreceptie werd eveneens de ‘ABTO Star’ uitge- reikt. Na de erkenningen voor Geert Raes (Wings ’n Wheels) en Jean-Luc Hans (BT Tours) in 2018 en Pierre Fivet (VacanSoleil) in 2019, ging de ABTO Star dit jaar naar de Belgian Travel Summit, het gezamenlijk initiatief van de vak vereni- gingen VVR, UPAV, ABTO en CLIA. Die biedt een 3D-animatiefi lm met 4D-eff ecten in de zaal. Fabula, dat in de plaats komt van PandaDroom, telt ook een gloednieuw restaurant en een nieuwe speelzone. Het fi lmluik bestaat uit twee animatieprenten van elk acht minuten. “Voor de ontwikkeling van deze twee fi lms hebben we voor het eerst samengewerkt met de Britse animatie- studio Aardman”, zegt Peter Koppelmans, ontwerpcoördinator bij De Efteling. “Dankzij de combinatie van voor- en hoofdfi lm kan Fabula 1760 bezoekers per uur ontvangen. De naam verwijst naar een fabel: een verhaal van dieren met een moraal. Het thema ‘Natuur’ is niet alleen vertaald in het scenario, maar ook in de inrichting van het restaurant en de speelzone.” “De fi lm draait rond twee centrale fi guren: een stoere beer en een schattig eekhoorntje”, vult auteur-regisseur Steve Harding-Hill van Aardman Studios aan. “In het begin wil Peter Koppelmans (ontwerpcoördinator De Efteling), Steve Harding-Hill (auteur-regisseur Aardman Studios) de zelfzuchtige beer niet van het eekhoorntje weten. Op het einde neemt hij het in de en Melvin van Brakel (Food & Beverage Manager De Efteling) armen. De twee prenten zijn geknipt voor kinderen vanaf drie jaar tot de tienerleeftijd.” Fabula komt in de plaats van de attractie PandaDroom, die steeds minder bezoekers trok en na 17 jaar ook totaal verouderd was. Ook de setting van Fabula is compleet vernieuwd. Melvin van Brakel, Food & Beverage Manager De Efteling: “De capaciteit van het restaurant is met bijna de helft verhoogd tot 300 zitplaatsen. Het bestaat uit twee zones: een luik met wereldkeuken en de savannebar. Op een touchscreen maken de klanten hun keuze. Een buzzer geeft het signaal wanneer de bestelling klaar is.” Fabula betekent een investering van 3,5 miljoen euro. Het themapark trekt jaarlijks 5,4 miljoen bezoekers.     FINCANTIERI DELIVERS “SCARLET LADY”, THE FIRST VIRGIN VOYAGES SHIP Trieste, February 14, 2020 – “Scarlet Lady”, the first of four ships which Virgin Voyages (new cruise operator and a brand part of Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Group), ordered to Fincantieri, was delivered today at the shipyard in Genoa Sestri Ponente. The ship was presented yesterday during an official ceremony at the presence of authorities and the top management of the two companies. “Scarlet Lady” weighs about 110,000 gross tons, is 278 meters long and 38 wide. She features over 1,400 guest cabins designed to host more than 2,770 passengers, accompanied by 1,160 crew members on board. Virgin Voyages second ship, “Valiant Lady”, currently under construction in the same yard, will be delivered in 2021, while the third and the fourth units, still unnamed, will set sail respectively in 2022 and 2023. Fincantieri has built 98 cruise ships since 1990 and other 48 ships are currently being designed or built in all the Group’s yards. * * * Fincantieri is one of the world’s largest shipbuilding groups and number one for diversification and innovation. Nicola heads up the global US product except for any ski- related content. Scott Dunn is a high-end operator specialising in luxury holidays for affluent UK consumers. They have a strong repeat client base and its personal travel consultants know their customers extremely well. Nicola has been completing a product and contracting review since joining towards the end of 2019. Customers require concierge level service - guests don't want to share their time, they want exclusivity and reliably luxurious accommodation choices. Nicola will be reviewing hotel and villa options and will follow up with content requirements. If Only – We conducted a telephone meeting with Calum Findlater, Product Manager for North America. Calum advised the office was open but limited to reservations and after sales staff only, all other employees had been told to stay at home for the foreseeable future. All staff have been asked to reduce working down to 4 days per week. 9 out of 10 calls are for amendments and the majority of bookings are being moved to the same or similar dates in 2021. Suppliers are being flexible and If Only are not applying any additional change or cancellation fees. Biggest frustrations are the immediate repatriations, especially with the UK/Ireland bans on travel and removal of airlift.
