  • Diplomatic, Political, Educational and Military Connections Existed Between Scots, Scotland and the Rest of Europe
SCOTTISH TRAVELLERS ABROAD, 1660-1688 Diplomatic, political, educational and military connections existed between Scots, Scotland and the rest of Europe. This paper concentrates on the connections fostered between Scots and the European continent by travel. A great number of young gentlemen travellers left the British isles to travel abroad during the reigns of Charles II and James II. Young British gentlemen travelled for many and varied reasons. Many travelled for their education, often in company with a tutor. Rarely did a Briton travel in an area totally lacking in support networks of friends and social contacts; continental Europe was awash with members of Britain's ruling elite who travelled together or formed enclaves in almost every major town and city throughout western Europe. Much has been written on the subject of the British tourist abroad. By 'British' most scholars have meant 'English'. Where discussions of Scots have occurred these have usually been as an adjunct to, or an extension of, constructs associated with the English travel experience. Similarly, so great an emphasis has been placed upon the 'Grand Tour' of the eighteenth century that the travelling networks and experiences of the late seventeenth century have often been treated as a mere preamble to the better established routes of the following century. The disposition and personality of Scottish travellers in this period ranged from the strongly anti-English, pro-French Walter Scot, Earl of Tarras, to the anglophile James Douglas Hamilton, Earl of Arran. Scottish travellers were exclusively male, though many Scottish women lived abroad on a permanent basis. I Whatever their proclivities it was the duty and pleasure of all young noblemen to traveJ.2 The appeal of travel was further increased by the fact that Scots, all over the European continent, had little trouble finding co-religionists and other Britons of comparable social status wherever they travelled.

THE Hamiltons, so far as trustworthy evidence goes, cannot equal in descent either the Stewarts or Douglases, their history beginning about two hundred years later than that of the former, and one hundred years later than that of the latter ; still their antiquity is considerable. In the introduction to the first chapter I have dealt with the suggested earlier origin of the family. The Hamiltons were conspicuous in their loyalty to Queen Mary, and, judging by the number of marriages between members of the different branches, they were also loyal to their race. Throughout their history one hears little of the violent deeds which charac- terised the Stewarts and Douglases, and one may truthfully say the race has generally been a peaceful one.

Their Nation Dishonored, the Queen Shamed, and Country Undone: Feuding, Factionalism, and Religion in the Chaseabout Raid Abstract The mid-sixteenth century witnessed religious and political upheaval across much of Western Europe, particularly in the British Isles. In 1565, a good portion of the Scottish nobility rebelled against their sovereign, Mary, Queen of Scots. The roles played and decisions made by the nobles during this revolt, known as the Chaseabout Raid, provide important insights concerning the converging issues of feuding, factionalism, and religion in Scotland. My reconstructed narrative of the Chaseabout Raid indicates that there were, in fact, no firm factions determined yb ideology, but rather shifting allegiances in the midst of conflict, determined yb complex and interrelated factors, personalities, and motivations. The primary motivation for the coalitions formed during the Chaseabout Raid was selfish personal ambition—base desire for individual gain still superseded any proto-nationalistic ideas or purely ideological commitments.

LONDON: PRINTED BY J. E. TAYLOE & CO., LITTLE QUEEtf STEEET, HOLBORF. 1867. JKINTKD BY J. E. TAYLOR AND CO., LITTLE QIKEN STttBET, LINCOLN'S INN FIELDS. PREFACE. When Colonel Cowell Stepney recently applied to me for a consent to his reprinting the two following papers, which 1 contributed to the Transactions of the Society of Antiquaries in the years 1849 and 1851, it was with much pleasure that I gave an instant acquiescence. Indeed, with reference to the hitter paper, it ought to be regarded almost as much his pro- perty as it is mine, for it was mainly built upon materials which he himself collected, and placed in my hands for use. The incident with which these papers are connected, and which gives them any little interest they may possess, is that mysterious circumstance which passes under the name of the Gowrie Conspiracy. It is unquestionably a very curious subject of discussion, and especially so on account of the dif- ficulty of reconciling the facts really known with any of the theories which have been invented to account for them. Pre- sume it, as I do, to have been a treasonable design against King James, and it must be admitted that nothing in the annals of conspiracy, fertile as they are in folly as well as in crime, was ever more puerile in design or more weakly carried out.
