Abrams* ABSTRACT In 1972, Little League's national office forced 12-year-old Maria Pepe off her Hoboken (N.J) team because "[g/irls are not eligible. "The New Jersey Division on Civil Rights sustained her gender discrimination claim in 1973, and the courts upheld the administrative decision a year later. National reaction to Maria Pepe s courageous insistence on gender equity helped sustain the evolution in gender roles that had accelerated since the Women s Movement of the 1960s. Her landmark legal action also likely influenced the Supreme Court's gradual movement toward intermediate scrutiny of gender discrimination claims; the 1975 federal regulations that assured Title IX of the EducationAmendments of 1972 a prominent role in elementary, secondary and higher education; and children ' socializationconcerning gender roles in our society. -

GOODBYE, OLD FRIEND: TRIBUTE TO JUSTICE RUTH BADER GINSBURG Brenda Feigen* In the early 1970s, the National Board of the ACLU declared women’s rights its top legal and legislative priority, creating the national Women’s Rights Project in late 1971.1 Ruth Bader Ginsburg was then a law professor at Rutgers University2 and the ACLU’s pick for director. In 1970, Martin Ginsburg, her husband and a tax lawyer, spotted a curious case in a tax court advance sheet brought pro se by a single man who was taking care of his elderly mother. 3 Charles Moritz had to hire outside help to assist while he was away from home as a traveling salesman.4 He wanted a $600 dependent care deduction, a credit afforded any woman, married couple, widowed or divorced man, but not to a single man who had never married.5 Ruth and Marty took the case pro bono and appealed to the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit where, with the support of the ACLU, they won.6 Before Mr. Moritz could realize the benefit, the U.S. Government appealed to the Supreme Court, asserting that this case would cast a cloud of unconstitutionality over literally hundreds of federal statutes.7 In so doing, Erwin Griswold, formerly * J.D. 1969, Harvard Law School. She served as the National Legislative Vice President of NOW and was a co-founder of Ms. Magazine and the National Women’s Political Caucus. However, it is important to note that most films involve a complex weave of talents, properties, and personalities. Moreover, film is usually considered a director's rather than a writer's medium; consequently, it is often the director's rather than the writer's vision that shapes a film. Therefore, the extent of a screenwriter's contribution to any given film can sometimes be difficult to ascertain. Nevertheless, gay and lesbian screenwriters have played significant roles in both mainstream and independent film. The Hollywood-Studio Era During the Hollywood-studio era, roughly from the 1920s through the 1960s, homosexuality was rarely portrayed on the screen. When it did appear, it was typically depicted as something to laugh at or to scorn. As a result, gay and lesbian screenwriters learned to express their personal sensibilities discreetly between the lines of a film. Perhaps the most significant and prominent lesbian filmmaker to function in the studio era was Dorothy Arzner. Although working within the constraints on form and content imposed by the studio system, Arzner nevertheless brought a distinctive, personal point of view to her films about strong-willed, independent women, within the context of such controversial subjects as extramarital sex, prostitution, and cross-class relationships. -

The Escort follows the relationship between Charlotte, a high-class call girl played by Maggie Siff (Mad Men, Sons of Anarchy) and Rhona, her upper West side female gynecologist, played by Polly Draper (thirtysomething, Broadway’s Closer). James Eckhouse (CTG’s The Goat, Beverly Hills 90210) doubles as Rhona’s self-righteous liberal ex-husband and one of Charlotte’s johns, and LA-theater newcomer Gabriel Sunday (My Suicide, Taking Woodstock) doubles as Rhona’s manipulative teenage son and a seductive male escort. Helmed by Lisa Peterson, The Escort opens at the Geffen Playhouse on April 6 and runs through May 8. “The last play I wrote for the Geffen was about cancer, fire, suicide and death; so I thought I'd give us all a break this time and write about sex,” said playwright Jane Anderson. “Audiences shouldn't expect from me some bawdy farce filled with a lot of slamming of bedroom doors, but what I hope to do is to give them a great roller coaster ride where they swing between asking ‘why not?’ to saying ’enough is enough is enough.’" The Escort is the Geffen Playhouse’s second commission from Emmy Award winning playwright Jane Anderson. Her first, The Quality of Life, premiered in the Audrey Skirball Theater at the Geffen Playhouse in 2007 and was honored with numerous awards including both an LADCC and Ovation Award for Best New Play before moving on to subsequent productions around the country.
