Women have not only accessed and embraced higher education, but they perform exceptionally well in their chosen fields. They enter many different professions and careers, and they balance home and work – so one might ask what challenges remain? As I write I am preparing to address that question when I deliver a special Tanner Lecture at Ochanomizu University. The women’s university in Tokyo can trace its roots back to 1875 – just four years after Newnham began as a house for five students in Regent Street. Presented annually, the Tanner Lectures aim to advance and reflect upon the scholarly and scientific learning related to human values.

Success of new and existing series Twofour kicked off 2016 with The Real Marigold Hotel (BBC Two) which saw some of Britain’s best loved celebrities head to India on an experimental adventure. The series was the highest rating show in its slot for the past 12 months, consolidating at 4.2m. Candid factual shows such as Dementiaville and Kitchen Impossible delivered critical acclaim for Channel 4 whilst primetime entertainment series The Jump (Channel 4) recorded its strongest audiences to date. Twofour continued to develop its daytime slate with new titles including Chopping Block (ITV1) and evolved The Housing Enforcers into one of BBC One’s strongest daytime brands with a 30% share of the audience at its peak. The Vote Twofour produced BAFTA nominated The Vote (More4), an unprecedented national television event, on 7th May 2015, boasting a cast including Dame Judi Dench, Catherine Tate and Jude Law. The play dramatised the final 90 minutes before the polls closed in the election and was the first ever live fixed rig transmission for C4 using over 2,000 live cuts with 20 cameras to create television history in the run up to the polls closing. The live broadcast drew in the largest audience of the year on More4, with 673,000 viewers.

    Urbanities, Vol. 6 · No 2 · November 2016 © 2016 Urbanities Anglo-Indian Returnees: Reverse Migration to Goa1 Robyn Andrews (Massey University, New Zealand) [email protected] The Anglo-Indian community is a culturally hybrid Indian minority of colonial origin, whose members are English-speaking, Christian, urban dwelling and traditionally employed in government services such as the Indian railways. In the almost seventy years since India gained its independence from Britain Anglo-Indians have migrated in large numbers, mainly to English-speaking Commonwealth countries. There has been no notable trend of remittances or of reverse migration, as occurs with many other diasporic communities. Based on ethnographic research in the State of Goa, India, a new migration story is emerging, one of Anglo-Indians returning to India mainly or primarily for economic reasons. Some were struggling financially in their adopted countries for both personal and recent systemic reasons, while others who were quite economically comfortable have capitalised on the global north to south differential and exchanged comfortable for luxurious living. In contrast to other migrations their returns fit more closely with those ‘later life’ migrants (however they are termed) whose motives are mainly for improved climate and lifestyle. In the case of Anglo-Indians, there is the added appeal of an identity fit, in combination with the ethnic capital to make it achievable. Hershberg Professor of History and International Affairs George Washington University ([email protected]) Presented to the Panel, “New Perspectives on Latin America’s Cold War” International Studies Association/Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales (ISA/FLACSO) Conference, Buenos Aires, Argentina, 23 July 2014 1 This presentation draws on my ongoing book project on the US-Cuban-Brazilian triangular relationship (or quadrangular, if one adds their relations with what was quaintly still known as the “Sino-Soviet bloc”) at the height of the Cold War, in the early 1960s, a span encompassing such tumultuous events as the Cuban Revolution, the Bay of Pigs affair, and the Cuban Missile Crisis. My inquiry originated in, and spun off from, my longstanding in the international history of the October 1962 missile crisis, when in the late 1990s I first noticed (in a translated Soviet document) that at the height of the missile crisis, Brazil was involved in a secret mediation effort between US President John F. Kennedy and Cuban leader Fidel Castro. That Soviet document described a meeting between Castro and a special emissary sent by Brazil’s president, João Goulart, just after the crisis climaxed, relaying what in fact was a laundered U.S. proposal (although Castro didn’t realize that). On searching for background in the relevant literature—to use in annotating the document for the Cold War International History Project Bulletin, which I then edited—I discovered that none existed.
