The study analysed data from self-reported surveys from 133 members of the sub-district level disaster management committee and government officials working with DRR. Employing the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) method, we find that political economy factors explain 68% of the variance in funding allocations. We also show that four categories of political economy factors—power and authority, interest and incentives, institutions, and values and ideas—are significantly influential over the distribution of DRR funding across subdistricts of Bangladesh. Our findings offer important policy implications to reduce the potential risks surrounding political economy influences in fund allocation and advance climate Citation: Islam, Shafiqul, Khondker finance literature. Despite substantial gains in provision of safe water supply in many areas of Bangladesh through improved water supply sources comprising different types of water technologies, some regions of Bangladesh still continued to suffer from water scarcity and quality. Information on the extent to which long term climate changes, weather variability have already been impacted or will impact on water availability and water quality with subsequent impacts on health across country is limited, though future projections of climate change for the South Asian region illustrated that drought conditions will be worsen and water quality issues related to extreme events, flooding, sea-level rise and saline intrusion will continue. This study was undertaken by the Environmental Health Unit of WHO to gather some preliminary evidence of the community perceptions about climate changes, weather variability and climate extremes in coastal and drought prone areas on livelihood mainly in relation to the water and health and the capacities of the communities for adaptation. -

Redwanur Rahman2 *Former UNO, Charghat Up-Zilla, Rajshahi, Bangladesh’ 1Department of Zoology, University of Rajshahi, Rajshahi-6205, Bangladesh; 2Institute of Environmental Science, University of Rajshahi, Rajshahi-6205, Bangladesh.e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: The physical conditions of Beel Koshba consisting of water temperature (25.36±5.12°C/day), water depth (204.96±110.36cm/month) and water transparency (30.91±6.78 cm/day) were recorded. The chemical parameters of total hardness, alkalinity, pH, DO, CO2 and ammonia were 146.60±13.36 mg/l, 143.30±9.33 mg/l, 7.05±0.75, 6.03±1.08 mg/l, 8.64±0.88 mg/l and 0.73±0.31 mg/l respectively. A total of 54 species of different vegetations 123 species of phytoplankton and 73 species of zooplankton were recorded from the beel. A total of 104 species of fish and Annelids (8), arthropods (12), molluscs (15), amphibian (8), reptiles (21), avis (40) and mammals (12) were identified. Pesticidal toxic effluents contexts were also observed in the beel ecosystem. Abstract The aim of this thesis is to trace transformations among the Santal of Bangladesh. To scrutinize these transformations, the hegemonic power exercised over the Santal and their struggle to construct a Santal identity are comprehensively examined in this thesis. The research locations were multi-sited and employed qualitative methodology based on fifteen months of ethnographic research in 2014 and 2015 among the Santal, one of the indigenous groups living in the plains of north-west Bangladesh. To speculate over the transitions among the Santal, this thesis investigates the impact of external forces upon them, which includes the epochal events of colonization and decolonization, and profound correlated effects from evangelization or proselytization. The later emergence of the nationalist state of Bangladesh contained a legacy of hegemony allowing the Santal to continue to be dominated. -

Mahbubur Rahman* Department of Botany, Plant Taxonomy Laboratory, Faculty of Life and Earth Sciences, University of Rajshahi, Rajshahi, Bangladesh ABSTRACT This study reports the surveyed list of medicinal plants used by Santal tribes of Tanore, Rajshahi in ethnoveterinary practices. During the study, interviews were conducted with the help of a semi-structured questionnaire and the guided field walks method. The ethnoveterinary plants traditionally used by Santal tribes were collected and preserved as herbarium specimens by following the standard methods. The identification of plants was further authenticated with the Herbarium, Department of Botany, Rajshahi University, Bangladesh. In this study, a total of 23 plant species under 22 genera and 17 families have been identified as the potential source for treating 14 types of ailments. The objective of the present study was to conduct ethnoveterinary surveys at Tanore Upazila of Rajshahi, Bangladesh. The various ailments treated by the Santals included weakness, low lactation, intestinal problem, diarrhea, stomach trouble, burn, dry cough, chronic ulcerous wounds, disinclination, sickness, constipation, asthmatic problem, urinate trouble of calf and dysentery. Moreover, proper documentation of ethnoveterinary practices leading to further scientific research can also become an important source for discovery of newer and more efficacious drugs. Manuscript Details Manuscript number ENVDEV_2017_280_R2 Title Indigenous people’s responses to drought in northwest Bangladesh Article type Research Paper Abstract Bangladesh is highly disaster-prone, with drought being a major hazard which significantly impacts water, food, health, livelihoods, and migration. In seeking to reduce drought vulnerabilities and impacts while improving responses, existing literature pays limited attention to community-level views and actions. This paper aims to contribute to filling in this gap by examining how an indigenous group, the Santal in Bangladesh’s northwest, responds to drought through local strategies related to water, food, and migration which in turn impact health and livelihoods. A combination of quantitative data through a household survey and qualitative data through participatory rural appraisal is used. The results suggest that the Santal people have developed and applied varied mechanisms for themselves to respond to drought. The categories of responses found are water collection and storage, crop and livestock selection, and migration. These responses might not be enough to deal with continuing droughts, yielding lessons for Bangladesh and beyond. As IWRM is an interdisciplinary approach and used for different objectives, the main emphasis is given to IWRM approaches for sustainable irrigation and their environmental aspects. In general integrated approaches in Bangladesh are scarce. Groundwater is the main source of irrigation as well as for domestic and industrial purposes in Barind area. In recent years, lowering of groundwater table is observed in some areas of the region. Lowering of groundwater table during dry months creates problems in the operation of STWs and hand tubewells. In some places of Tanore Upazila, declining trend of groundwater level also observed. In the next 25 years, food demand of the country is expected to increase by 29% which will require increased cropping intensity. In absence of major surface water diversion, added pressure on groundwater will lead to further depletion of the sources. -

Religious status of the study area was more or less equal- 52.66% Muslim and 47.34% Hindu. Educational condition was very poor- 65.96% of the total fishermen are either illiterate or can sign only, the major group (35.11%) of fisherman was young of 21-30 years of age, average household size of the two beels was 4.75, Most of the fishermen family were poor- 79.79% houses were kacha and only 3.72% were pucca houses, 80.85% fishermen use drinking water from other’s tube well, 64.89% fishermen do not use electricity, sanitation condition of the study area is very poor- 51.06% fishermen have no sanitation facility and only 12.77 have pucca sanitation facility, the ratio of on farm and off farm was 1:0.25 indicating greatly dependency of the fishermen’s livelihood on the beels. In terms of well-being ranking, 60.6% belongs to lower class category followed by middle class (34.6%) indicating poor condition of the studied fishermen. -

Mahbub Geography and Environment, University of Dhaka, Dhaka, Bangladesh Email: [email protected] Received June 6, 2012; revised July 4, 2012; accepted August 1, 2012 ABSTRACT In this paper the lithological study and mapping of Barind Tract is done by using irrigation boreholes log data in the context of an upazila under Barind Tract in northwest Bangladesh. Northwestern part of Bangladesh is severely drought prone area with lowest yearly rainfall in the country. Before groundwater irrigation only one crop was cultivated in this area in rainy season. After spreading of groundwater irrigation agriculture is flourished here, but groundwater level is severely going down, which is making this area risky for several adverse effect like land subsidence, biodiversity loss etc. Lithology is one of the important factors that affect the recharging of groundwater aquifer of any area. This research mainly based on secondary data. Irrigation boreholes log data are collected from Barind Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA), a local authority under the Ministry of Agriculture of Bangladesh government provide irrigation in Barind Tract. A GPS survey is conducted to locate the boreholes in the study area. From the study highest thickness of clay layer found 90 ft and lowest 20 ft, and thickness gradually increase from eastern to western side. -

Additionally, homicide patterns over time shed light on regional differences, especially when looking at long-term trends. The connection between violence, security and development, within the broader context of the rule of law, is an important factor to be considered. Since its impact goes beyond the loss of human life and can create a climate of fear and uncertainty, intentional homicide (and violent crime) is a threat to the population. Homicide data can therefore play an important role in monitoring security and justice.
