In 1971 this community college was chartered by the state of North Carolina and at the time a number of articles appeared in the local paper noting the significance of the event and its potential impact on Stanly County. There was much talk about how the new technical school (we were Stanly Technical Institute at the time) would benefit hundreds and thousands of students. And, over the course of almost four decades, we have done just that...serve thousands of students in the county and region! But, as you consider selecting a college, your thought process probably does not focus on “thousands served”, more likely on what this particular college can do for you as a college student! After all, we have trained over 500 nurses in our college history. But, if you are a patient in a local hospital you don’t care how many SCC nurses there are...you are concerned that the one that is help ing you is well trained for their job! Much like McDonald’s, which has served billions of burgers, I am only interested in the one I am about to eat. So, you have to consider not simply that we have a strong history of service to the county, region and thousands of former students and graduates, but what this college can offer you. First, I hope you consider our curriculum programs. Simply stated, our programs are as good or better than any you will find. Our nursing graduates make great nurse practitioners in this community and dozens of surrounding commu nities in the region. Graduates of our Criminal Justice programs serve with distinction in police departments and county sheriff's offices around the entire state. Graduates of our Early Childhood program serve in classrooms throughout the county and region as teachers or run day care operations. Technology graduates have numerous opportunities to work at leading business and industries throughout the region. We have strong academic programs in a number of areas, but then so do other colleges in the region. We offer scholarships and support services to our students but then other colleges do as well. A large number of our students receive some form of financial support to help cover the cost of tuition and books. We also offer strong tutoring programs and other services designed to keep our students enrolled, but more than that...to be success ful. But, then I should say other colleges offer the same. So, what makes us different from those other colleges? I think it is the folks who work here and our attitude about you as a student, or should I say potential student at this point. It all begins with the folks who work at the college and share a common mission, to help you be as successful as possible. Many of us at SCC know firsthand how it is to be a community college student. If we had a t-shirt printed with any saying, it would read “Been there, done that”. Over 1/3 of our staff has been a community college student (this writer included). So, we know how demanding it is to be a full-time student, full-time worker and perhaps even parent. All those responsibilities place increased pressure on being a student and make our faculty and staff even more supportive of our students! At the end of the process you will go through to select your college of opportunity, you will weigh the academic programs and support services before making your decision. Perhaps what we offer our students is the most difficult to gauge—it is more a feeling than anything else. A feeling that the folks at Stanly Community College want you to succeed and will do everything within their power to help you reach your goals. In the end, many of the factors you will consider are equal at other colleges in the area. I believe what sets us apart more than anything else is our people. Dr. Michael R.
