Welcome to the 2019 IKD World Camp and thank you in advance for your support! This year’s camp is in a new location at Jacksons Point in beautiful Georgina, Ontario. It is about one-hour drive north of Toronto. Unfortunately, Camp White Pine in Haliburton was unavailable for the dates we wanted; hosting early in June would have been too cold. When I began my karate journey as a boy of 14 years old in 1964, I never dreamed or imagined that 55 years later, I would become the leader of perhaps, the fastest growing traditional karate organization in the world that in the span of seven years, IKD would be in 70 regions in 50 countries. I also did not dream I would have the honour and privilege of training in Japan, and as well, training under Japanese masters for over 40 years with: Masatoshi Nakayama, Teruyuki Okazaki, Hidetaka Nishiyama, Yutaka Yaguchi, and all other legendary JKA Masters like Suigura, Ito, Shoji, Kanazawa, Mikami, Enoeda, Ueki, Osaka, Yahara, Takashina, Koyama, Ochi, and many others. IKD is proud to announce another innovative and exciting programme for this year’s camp! This is another example for other organizations to emulate for years to come. IKD Distinguished Awards will be presented to members and friends who are nominated by their regional director or chief instructor for exceptional achievement and service to karate and the IKD. There are five levels of Awards: 1. Lifetime of Excellence Award. 2. Lifetime of Achievement Award. 3. Lifetime of Service Award. 4. IKD Hall of Fame Induction. 5. National or Regional Medal of Service. The first four Awards are at the International level and the fifth, at the National level. This means the International awards are only presented at World Camp or World Cup. Candidates are to be nominated by their regional director or chief instructor and they shall be a Member of the IKD Distinguished Awardees Association. There is a one-time registration fee with “Benefits of Membership”. On Saturday immediately after dinner, awardees will gather next door at the Norman Boyle Auditorium for the formal award ceremony and gala. Dress is formal. These Awards are unique: They can be detached from the ribbon, as well as the base, and can be worn around the neck, displayed at home or the office as a centerpiece, or mounted on the wall. It comes with a beautiful IKD diploma, similar to our dan diploma. As usual, I give you a brief history of IKD World Camp features: • 2011 – Swearing in Ceremony of Shuseki Shihan and two deputies and adoption of the Haori. • 2012 – Adoption of the IKD Kyu and Dan Examination Syllabus. • 2013 – Adoption of IKD Passports and the Instructor Training Programme. • 2014 – A New Method of Teaching: kihon, kumite, team kata, bunkai and enbu. • 2015 – General Membership participation and discussion of the new IKD Tournament Rules. • 2016 – Introduction of Oyo and Traditional Weapons. • 2017 – The Science of IKD Karate. • 2018 - FW 50 Years Teaching and Elite Karate Training. Second Edition IKD Passport. • 2019 – FW 55 Years Training Celebration and IKD Distinguished Awards Gala. International Karate Daigaku Distinguished Awards The Phoenix rising from the ashes in the “National Medal of Service Award”, represents 40 years of loyal service I gave my Japanese Masters until my resignation in 2011 with a broken heart and spirit. With the help of true and loyal friends, I rose again from the ashes to head the fastest growing karate organization in the world that in seven short years, IKD is represented in 70 regions in 50 countries worldwide. The Hall of Fame Award is a prototype; the final medal will look like the National Medal of Service. Rather than using a static immobile building to represent the “Hall of Fame Award”, I chose the world-famous “Kaieteur Falls” found deep in the Guyana Amazon to symbolize the Hall of Fame. Kaieteur Falls is the world’s largest single drop waterfall by the volume of water flowing over it. Its river is the “path or hall” that leads to the falls through the dense Amazon Rainforest. In karate, the important concept “A Mind Like Water” has its own symbolic interpretation of the “way” of karate. Water, in its calm state, symbolizes mental clarity, and in its thundering state, represents the power of karate. Moreover, the open hand symbolizes the meaning of the word karate – empty hand, no weapons. The other three Awards will feature Shuseki Shihan and Fuku Shuseki Shihan(s) performing their favourite techniques with their Chinese Zodiac animal birth signs in the background - the Tiger, Dragon and Horse. We look forward to working with you and hope to see you thrive as we begin this journey together. Shotokan karate training helps increase physical fitness, confidence, improved motor skills, flexibility, speed, concentration, discipline and personal safety. Karate is practiced by young and old alike. Anyone can learn karate no matter what your age, gender and physical condition. Karate encompasses so much more than just physical training. The mental & spiritual benefits of karate training are endless and increases as you progress along this journey. Learning karate can be an extremely awkward experience at first. Not only are you exercising your body in ways that you have never done before, but it also encompasses mental & spiritual aspects that you may have not foreseen. Karate is deeply rooted in Eastern philosophies and with that comes a different way of thinking. Mutual respect for one another is of utmost importance. That being said, persistence and a positive attitude towards learning will help overcome this initial awkwardness. Below you will find some useful information that will attempt to answer the most commonly asked questions and the rules and etiquette of the dojo (training place). If you have questions, please do not hesitate to ask the Sensei (Teacher) or Sempai (Senior Student).

  • An Interview with Hiroyoshi Okazaki
An Interview with Hiroyoshi Okazaki The name Okazaki needs absolutely no introduction at all. It is a name that, it could be argued, goes synonymously with not only karate in America, but JKA karate full-stop. I am of course referring to the legendary and iconic Teruyuki Okazaki. In this edition however we have an interesting interview with a younger generation of the Okazaki family – nephew and proud carrier of the Okazaki name and legacy Hiroyoshi Okazaki. The son of Teruyoshi Okazaki, also a direct student of Master Gichin Funakoshi, it seems somewhat inevitable that Hiroyoshi would soon follow in the family’s footsteps and become a karateka to contend with. Today, within ISKF, Hiroyoshi is one of its most senior members, and as a 7th Dan, is helping to further propagate the ISKF and Okazaki way. This is an insightful and interesting interview with someone that will undoubtedly be a significant force in the future of American karate. I hope you all enjoy!!! – Shaun Banfield Questions by THE SHOTOKAN WAY An Interview with Hiroyoshi Okazaki (Shaun Banfield) Hello Sensei Okazaki. Thank you for being so willing to give us this interview. I am very looking forward to speaking with you and hearing your thoughts. (Hiroyoshi Okazaki) Thank you for having me. (SB) You are of course the nephew of Master Teruyuki Okazaki 10th Dan, so perhaps this may sounds like an odd questions, but could you please tell us a little about how you first got involved with karate? (HO) I was introduced to karate when I was early teens.

  • Greer Golden – a Cornerstone of Shotokan Karate in America
Greer Golden – A Cornerstone of Shotokan Karate in America Many current Shotokan instructors, not only in the Mid-America Region, but also many who migrated throughout the country, began their training during their college years, under Sensei Greer Golden. Others from around the country were able to experience Sensei Golden’s teaching at ISKF summer camps or other events in the past. Virtually all would agree that he had a way of motivating and connecting to college-age students that made him genuinely special. His students, and their progeny, perhaps numbering in the thousands, owe much of their current understructure for karate spirit, technique, and personal growth, to Sensei Golden. His history of courage and enthusiasm, and his legacy as an instructor are truly inspiring. In 1956, Mr. Golden was stationed in post-World War II Japan. While stationed in Okinawa Golden saw Sensei Kobayashi conducting karate classes at the Air Force base. Mr. Golden began training with Sensei Kobayashi and Shotokan karate quickly became his passion. The Japanese were defeated but unbroken, and many were harsh on an American determined to master the skill and lifestyle of Shotokan. Golden persevered despite the difficulties, and extended his enlistment, allowing him to earn his shodan in Japan, as one of the first Americans to Sensei Golden at the ISKF do so. headquarters in the early ‘80s. Sensei Golden returned to the United States in 1961. He was invited by Master Hidetaka Nishiyama to train in his dojo in Los Angeles. In 1965 they were joined by a young assistant instructor from Japan, Master Yutaka Yaguchi, who had a major influence on Golden.

  • Training Handbook
Training Handbook Dedicated to Master Teruyuki Okazaki and Master Yutaka Yaguchi Copyright 2017, Boulder Shotokan Karate 5610 N 71st Street. Longmont, CO 80503 www.shotokan.net September 2017, All Rights Reserved Foreword As a new student you are already a valuable and essential part of our Karate-do training group. Your desire to learn, your energy, and your spirit all expand outward to those with whom you will train. More importantly, the challenges ahead for you will be shared by all, and are an important part of our mutual growth. Training in a new art, particularly a martial art, can be a bewildering initial experience. There is much more to learn than perhaps you had anticipated; mental and spiritual, as well as physical. No matter what your initial concept of karate, you will undoubtedly come to experience it as something much deeper. This handbook is an attempt to introduce you to some basic and guiding concepts, theory, the rules and etiquette of the dojo (training place) and amongst karateka (karate practitio- ners), background history, and other helpful information on Shotokan karate. Even with the best efforts at assembling this handbook, it must be emphasized that karate is not learned by reading, but from training! The dojo offers a uniquely safe environment for you to open yourself up; to experiment with new ideas, new movements, and even new feelings. Most of the revelations awaiting along the way come by merely freeing your mind, relaxing your body, and opening your heart. Training in Karate-do is a remarkable, multi- faceted experience. The efforts of training are well rewarded, and the enjoyment you had expected to find is but a fraction of the joys you will experience! "You cannot teach people anything, you can only help them discover it within themselves." - Galileo What is Karate? Karate is many things.
