Appendix Lagomorph Species: Geographical Distribution and Conservation Status PAULO C. ALVES1* AND KLAUS HACKLÄNDER2 Lagomorph taxonomy is traditionally controversy, and as a consequence the number of species varies according to different publications. Although this can be due to the conservative characteristic of some morphological and genetic traits, like general shape and number of chromosomes, the scarce knowledge on several species is probably the main reason for this controversy. Also, some species have been discovered only recently, and from others we miss any information since they have been first described (mainly in pikas). We struggled with this difficulty during the work on this book, and decide to include a list of lagomorph species (Table 1). As a reference, we used the recent list published by Hoffmann and Smith (2005) in the “Mammals of the world” (Wilson and Reeder, 2005). However, to make an updated list, we include some significant published data (Friedmann and Daly 2004) and the contribu- tions and comments of some lagomorph specialist, namely Andrew Smith, John Litvaitis, Terrence Robinson, Andrew Smith, Franz Suchentrunk, and from the Mexican lagomorph association, AMCELA. We also include sum- mary information about the geographical range of all species and the current IUCN conservation status. Inevitably, this list still contains some incorrect information. May 16, 2011 Federal Trade Commission Office of the Secretary, Room H–113 (Annex O) 600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20580 RE: Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking under the Fur Products Labeling Act; Matter No. P074201 On behalf of the more than 11 million members and supporters of The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), I submit the following comments to be considered regarding the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) advance notice of proposed rulemaking under the federal Fur Products Labeling Act (FPLA), 16 U.S.C. § 69, et seq. The rulemaking is being proposed in response to the Truth in Fur Labeling Act (TFLA), Public Law 111–113, enacted in December 2010, which eliminates the de minimis value exemption from the FPLA, 16 U.S.C. § 69(d), and directs the FTC to initiate a review of the Fur Products Name Guide, 16 C.F.R. 301.0. Thus, the FTC indicated in its notice that it is specifically seeking comment on the Name Guide, though the agency is also generally seeking comment on its fur rules in their entirety. As discussed below, the HSUS believes that there is a continuing need for the fur rules and for more active enforcement of these rules by the FTC. The purpose of the FPLA and the fur rules is to ensure that consumers receive truthful and accurate information about the fur content of the products they are purchasing. Unfortunately, sales of unlabeled and mislabeled fur garments, and inaccurate or misleading advertising of fur garments, remain all too common occurrences in today’s marketplace. -

Taiwan, Korea and Japan 2016
TAIWAN , SOUTH KOREA AND JAPAN 2016 After a winter trip in Japan 10 years ago I wanted to return in this country in spring to see different birds and more mammals. But by the end I added South Korea to see Finless Porpoise and Taïwan for Serow, Pitta and pheasants. To avoid the rainy season (summer) I decided to start in Taïwan, then to go to South Korea and by the end Japan (end of May being good in Hokkaido for the birds, earlier might be too cold). The problem was where to spend the Golden Week (first week of May) which is every year one of the worst time to travel in this part of the world. A lot of people at this time are on vacations: parks are crowded, as the roads, and it is difficult to find transport or accommodation. By the end I chose South Korea, thinking it was the best or the less bad. The 3 countries are expensive but people are very helpful especially in Japan and Taiwan. It is unbelievable in a western country to see what these people can do to help you. The security is good. And especially in Japan people respect the road of the rules. It is not the same in the rest of the world (I won’t say which countries are the worst.). I enjoyed this trip and want to go back next year. As often I used MAMMALWATCHING to prepare my trip. For the first time I also used Birdquest trip reports. It seems that now this company is more open to include information about mammals. -
Animal Sales from Wuhan Wet Markets Immediately Prior to the COVID-19
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Animal sales from Wuhan wet markets immediately prior to the COVID‑19 pandemic Xiao Xiao1,2, Chris Newman3,4, Christina D. Buesching4,5, David W. Macdonald3 & Zhao‑Min Zhou1,6* Here we document 47,381 individuals from 38 species, including 31 protected species sold between May 2017 and November 2019 in Wuhan’s markets. We note that no pangolins (or bats) were traded, supporting reformed opinion that pangolins were not likely the spillover host at the source of the current coronavirus (COVID‑19) pandemic. While we caution against the misattribution of COVID‑19’s origins, the wild animals on sale in Wuhan sufered poor welfare and hygiene conditions and we detail a range of other zoonotic infections they can potentially vector. Nevertheless, in a precautionary response to COVID‑19, China’s Ministries temporarily banned all wildlife trade on 26th Jan 2020 until the COVID‑19 pandemic concludes, and permanently banned eating and trading terrestrial wild (non‑ livestock) animals for food on 24th Feb 2020. These interventions, intended to protect human health, redress previous trading and enforcement inconsistencies, and will have collateral benefts for global biodiversity conservation and animal welfare. Alongside extensive research into the epidemiology, virology and medical treatment of SARS-CoV-2, known generally as COVID-19, it is also vital to better understand and mitigate any role that may have been played by the illegal wildlife trade (IWT) in China, in initiating this pandemic 1.
