Plant Guide for Rocky Mountain Penstemon
Natural Resources Conservation Service Plant Guide ROCKY MOUNTAIN Ornamental: The beautiful flowers and evergreen basal leaves of Rocky Mountain penstemon make it attractive PENSTEMON for ornamental and landscape planting (Smith, et. al., 2009). Rocky Mountain penstemon has been identified as Penstemon strictus Benth. a compatible and beneficial companion plant to grow Plant Symbol = PEST2 along with several paintbrush (Castilleja) species for ornamental applications (Nelson, 2005). Paintbrush plants require a companion plant to serve as host for its semi-parasitic needs. Status Please consult the PLANTS Web site and your State Department of Natural Resources for this plant’s current status (e.g., threatened or endangered species, state noxious status, and wetland indicator values). Description General: Rocky Mountain penstemon, a member of the Figwort family (Schrophulariaceae) is a semi-evergreen, native, perennial forb with fibrous roots and is 35-70 cm tall. Plants are mostly glabrous and the leaves are entire. Basal and lower leaves are 5-15 cm long, 5-16 mm wide, narrowly oblanceolate, rounded at the tip and tapering to the base. The upper leaves are 4-10 cm long, 2-7 mm wide, linear and often folded. The flower stalks have a whorl of 1 or 2 flowers (sometimes 4) at each node. The sepals are 3-5 mm long, glabrous and ovate or rounded to obtuse and are glabrous. The petals are 24-32 mm long and the flower tube is 6-10 mm long, deep blue in color with a whitish color at the opening and often with red- violet lines inside the throat and sparsely bearded to sometimes glabrous. -

This listing emphasizes temperate families of the Northern Hemisphere and is meant as an overview with examples of Oregon native plants. If Schmac is right, the gene must be present in a whole lot of Coloradans, considering nearly 3,500 people packed The Ranch's First National Bank Building for this weekend's 10th annual Larimer County Fishing Expo. The free, two-day event also attracted more than 50 vendors, plus several of Colorado's most expert anglers, who taught seminars on topics that included "Fishing from Kayaks and Small Boats," "Choosing the Right Baits for Any Time of Year" and "Latest Technology in Fishing Sonars." The event originally started as a way to teach locals how to fish in reservoirs, since the Front Range and most of Eastern Colorado have no natural lakes. "If you're fishing around here, chances are someone dug a hole," said Chad LaChance, a professional angler and host of television's "Fishful Thinker," which air on World Fishing Network and Altitude Sports. The lack of natural lakes in the area, however, isn't all bad news. -

APPENDIX D.2 Plant Survey Memorandum Athos Memo Report To: Aspen Environmental Group From: Lehong Chow, Ironwood Consulting, Inc. Date: April 3, 2019 Re: Athos Supplemental Spring 2019 Botanical Surveys This memo report presents the methods and results for supplemental botanical surveys conducted for the Athos Solar Energy Project in March 2019 and supplements the Biological Resources Technical Report (BRTR; Ironwood 2019) which reported on field surveys conducted in 2018. BACKGROUND Botanical surveys were previously conducted in the spring and fall of 2018 for the entirety of the project site for the Athos Solar Energy Project (Athos). However, due to insufficient rain, many plant species did not germinate for proper identification during 2018 spring surveys. Fall surveys in 2018 were conducted only on a reconnaissance-level due to low levels of rain. Regional winter rainfall from the two nearest weather stations showed rainfall averaging at 0.1 inches during botanical surveys conducted in 2018 (Ironwood, 2019). In addition, gen-tie alignments have changed slightly and alternatives, access roads and spur roads have been added. PURPOSE The purpose of this survey was to survey all new additions and re-survey areas of interest including public lands (limited to portions of the gen-tie segments), parcels supporting native vegetation and habitat, and windblown sandy areas where sensitive plant species may occur. The private land parcels in current or former agricultural use were not surveyed (parcel groups A, B, C, E, and part of G). METHODS Survey Areas: The area surveyed for biological resources included the entirety of gen-tie routes (including alternates), spur roads, access roads on public land, parcels supporting native vegetation (parcel groups D and F), and areas covered by windblown sand where sensitive species may occur (portion of parcel group G). -

Doing so involves balancing residents’ desire for outdoor recreation with their desire to see us preserve and protect lands.1 In 2015, we progressed toward our vision in new and dynamic ways. Table of Actions We made significant land acquisitions, celebrated trailhead openings, expanded education offerings, and lauded volunteers, who set a record Commit 2 for service hours. We restored and advanced trails, invited visitors to become stewards, and initiated a countywide effort to connect youth Plan 3 and nature. All the while, we applied conservation practices informed by staff-guided, volunteer-supported research of animal and plant life on Preserve 4 open space lands. Steward 4 In the Douglas Mountain Area, we acquired properties totaling 1,036 acres—our largest acquisition in nearly 15 years. At Apex Park and Crown Create 5 Hill Park, we completed reimagined, amenity-rich trailheads. In Clear Creek Canyon Park, the 4-mile segment of the Peaks to Plains Trail Communicate 5 progressed to connect Jeffco segments with Clear Creek County— a project supported by Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) through Teach 6 Colorado Lottery proceeds. Enlist 6 To extend the mind, body and spirit benefits of nature to more youth, we brought together a 31-partner coalition to receive GOCO funding for the Share & Care 7 Inspire Initiative. -

Trees and Shrubs: Drought, Heat, Cold Tolerant Species This list of trees and shrubs is intended to provide guidance for choosing a tree or shrub which will grow in Las Vegas, New Mexico yards. This list of species is for residential yards, not City Parks which are regularly watered during the summer. Purpose. Before selecting a tree, think about the purposes of the tree you are going to plant: do you want it for shade, privacy screen, windbreak, beauty, wildlife value? Due to unpredictable late frosts, fruit producing trees are not recommended as a food source. For more information about what to look for buying a tree, watering, correct planting, watering, and pruning methods, read the Tree Owner’s Manual. A tree is an investment in both time and money. You can find the manual at http://na.fs.fed.us/pubs/uf/tom_natl/tree_owners_manual_web_res.pdf Site selection. Before buying a tree, determine where you are going to plant it, based on the purpose of the tree and these additional factors. Deciduous trees lose their leaves in the winter; if you plant them on the south and west side of your home, they will help with cooling during the summer. Because they lose their leaves, they allow winter sun to help warm your house. Reduce winds by planting trees and shrubs on the windy side of your home. Do not plant a tall tree near or under electric lines (height and width are listed in the descriptions). PNM recommends that a tree which is 25 feet tall at maturity be at least 15 feet from a power line; a 30 foot tall tree should be at least 30 feet away from a power line. -

Executive Summary This survey was a continuation of several years of rare plant survey on San Juan Public Lands. Funding for the project was provided by San Juan National Forest and the San Juan Resource Area of the Bureau of Land Management. Previous rare plant surveys on San Juan Public Lands by CNHP were conducted in conjunction with county wide surveys of La Plata, Archuleta, San Juan and San Miguel counties, with partial funding from Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO); and in 2004, public lands only in Dolores and Montezuma counties, funded entirely by the San Juan Public Lands. Funding for 2005 was again provided by San Juan Public Lands. The primary emphases for field work in 2005 were: 1. revisit and update information on rare plant occurrences of agency sensitive species in the Colorado Natural Heritage Program (CNHP) database that were last observed prior to 2000, in order to have the most current information available for informing the revision of the Resource Management Plan for the San Juan Public Lands (BLM and San Juan National Forest); 2.
