Received 16 February, 2018; Accepted 2 May, 2018 In this study, we learn how audiences make sense of a non-dominant text that is conveying a non- Western story about the Global War on Terror (GWOT). The audiences affective narratives affirm Deuze’s argument that media is not separate from our lived experience; we live in media rather than with media. This study was conducted on an urban campus in the Pacific North-West, with film audiences of over fifty Saudi Arabian, Baharanian, Iranian, Iraqi, Yemeni, and other Arab and non-Arab Muslims. Multiple screenings of Hindi language film, My Name is Khan, shows that it speaks to a global, transcultural, primarily Muslim audience that has lived in the pall of a world changed by 9/11. As audiences, they weave an oppositional narrative of security, multiculturalism and Muslim identity. While their visas define them as students, their experience as simply Arab or Muslim women and men situates them, in a wider articulation of their transnational identity. Rizwan, who has Aspergers, falls in love with Mandira. Despite protests from his family they get married and start a small business together. They are happy until September 11, 2001 when attitudes towards Muslims undergo a sea change. When tragedy strikes, Mandira is devastated and they separate. Rizwan is confused and very upset that the love of his life has left him. To win her back, he embarks on a journey across America. His main purpose for setting out on this journey is to meet the President of the United States and inform him that despite having Khan for a surname, he is not a terrorist. His simple understanding of the very serious situation is what grips us. Director Karan Johar is typically known to make films that are much more exaggerated and opulent. That is why people cannot avoid problems between their society and even with them selves. Problem will exist when there is a discrepancy between their present state and their perceived goal state and there is no readily apparent way to get from one to other. They sometimes have experiences in sadness, happiness, hesitation, and anxiety. Anxiety is one psychological problem. Anxiety can be a nightmare for some individual. Anxiety may occur when one individual feels his society no to treat him as an individual who has right to decide what he or she wants to express his or her feeling. Instead he or she pushes to speak. Anxiety is an unpleasant emotional experience similar but not identical to feelings of nervousness, worry, agitation, or panic (Burger, 1986:59). Under the pressure of excessive anxiety, the ego is sometimes forced to take extreme to relieve the pressure. These measures are called defense mechanism. In general, defense mechanism serves the useful purpose of defending the ego against the pain of anxiety. Although they are normal and universally used when carried to an extreme they lead to compulsive, repetitive, and even neurotic behavior. The establishment and maintenance of defense 1 2 mechanism require a consist expenditure of energy any person who elaborates them has little psychic energy left to satisfy id impulses. Defense mechanism deals directly with instinctual demands and defense itself against the anxiety (Feist, 1983:33). Defense mechanism is unconscious process to protect someone from anxiety.
