The previous ISI inspection was in October 2009. The Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) is the body approved by the Secretary of State for the purpose of inspecting schools belonging to the Independent Schools Council (ISC) Associations and reporting on compliance with the Education (Independent School Standards) Regulations 2014. The range of these Regulations can be viewed on the website www.legislation.gov.uk. Additionally, inspections will consider the school’s accessibility plan under Schedule 10 of the Equality Act 2010 and the ban on corporal punishment introduced by the School Standards and Framework Act 1998. The inspection was also carried out under the arrangements of the ISC Associations for the maintenance and improvement of the quality of their membership. -

SYNOPSIS OF BOARD OF GOVERNORS DR ANDREA ARLIDGE Andrea Arlidge is the CEO of Wellsway Multi Academy Trust. The trust runs a number of schools in South Bristol, South Gloucestershire and Bath & North East Somerset, including primary, secondary, studio and a special school. She has 16 year’s headship experience in three schools: St Katherine’s School in Pill 2000 – 2005; Wellsway School in Keynsham 2005 – 2016 and carried out an interim headship role at Sir Bernard Lovell School in Oldand Common during 2014/15. Alongside her role as CEO, Andrea is Chair of the Trust Board of the County Sports Partnership for the West of England (WESPORT) and a governor at City of Bristol College, she also sits on the Ofsted South West region Headteachers’ Reference Group and is a member of Ofsted’s South West region Scrutiny Committee. In 2018 Andrea was named a National Leader in Education by the Department of Education as well as being awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Education by Bath Spa University. ALAN BARR Alan became a Governor in 2011. He was a practising solicitor for over 30 years specialising in corporate law. He retired as the senior partner of Burges Salmon LLP, a large UK law firm based in Bristol, in 2018. Alan still works advising businesses in areas as varied as from dairy farming to shoe manufacturing. He is an active member of Redland Parish Church and a Director of the Diocese of Bristol Academies Company. He was educated in a Grammar School in Coleraine, Northern Ireland which in many ways was not dissimilar to BGS save that thanks to the 11 plus exam had no fees. -

The partnership launched in 2019 with a Climate Challenge project to address the challenges we are all facing in terms of the climate crisis and environmental breakdown. Head teachers at partner schools agreed to support this project as a response to the climate emergency declared by Bristol’s Mayor, the aspiration to make Bristol carbon neutral by 2030 and the school climate strikes which have indicated the concern that children and young people feel about this issue. The partnership was fortunate in receiving a grant from OVO Foundation to carry out this project. This report outlines the activities undertaken across the partnership as part of the project, key achievements, the challenges and lessons learned and recommendations in terms of next steps. The projects carried out in individual partner schools are included at Appendix 1. -

University of Bristol ITE Partnership Initial teacher education inspection report Inspection dates Stage 1: 30 April 2018 Stage 2: 12 November 2018 This inspection was carried out by Her Majesty’s Inspectors (HMI) and Ofsted Inspectors (OI) in accordance with the ‘Initial teacher education inspection handbooK’. This handbook sets out the statutory basis and framework for initial teacher education (ITE) inspections in England from September 2015. The inspection draws on evidence from the ITE partnership to make judgements against all parts of the evaluation schedule. Inspectors focused on the overall effectiveness of the ITE partnership in securing high-quality outcomes for trainees. The outcomes for trainees 1 The quality of training across 1 the partnership The quality of leadership and management across the 1 partnership Information about this secondary partnership ¢ The University of Bristol works in partnership with schools in and around Bristol to provide the postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) qualification. Trainees are provided with the opportunity to complete units of study that contribute towards a Master’s degree in education. ¢ The partnership offers two routes for training: university-based study and a school-based programme known as ‘School Direct’. In 2017/18, the university set a target of 225 places and, at the time of the inspection, there were 191 trainees. 16 of these trainees followed the School Direct route. -
