These next four years, I would like us to focus on being more welcoming of visitors and each other, and being more inviting of others to the Catholic faith. We have a fabulous community to invite people to experience our Lord and grow in their relationship with Him. Our faith is the antidote for people’s hunger for excellence and self-fulfillment. When we know God and God’s love, when we strive to be good and caring people, when we use our gifts for God’s glory and the benefit of others, that’s when we live the excellent life. Then it doesn’t matter if you make 7 digits or only 3, live in a mansion or a crowded single apartment, eat at Chez Panisse or the Asian Ghetto, knowing you made a difference for God and others by excelling in your gifts, makes life worth living and what it means to feel alive. Our Catholic faith, which inspires us and ignites us to be Christ for the world, is a treasure yearning to be shared. Let’s be God’s laborers in the harvest. I invite you to learn more about the Paulists and our charisms. I want you to be infected with the same Paulist charisms that have infected Fr. Al, Fr. George, and others to be such great missionaries for Christ. Check out Paulist.org or just speak to any of the Paulists on staff. We believe we have a wonderful spirit and attitude for sharing the Good News with creativity, joy, compassion, and zeal. Each Paulist has his own individual style, as we recognize and appreciate the diversity of gifts from one Holy Spirit. For such a time as now, a world facing much brokenness, I believe we have been called. My hope for Newman these next four years, is that we embrace our Paulist identity and be a vibrant parish reaching out to our friends, our neighbors, and beyond to invite folks to “come and see” the beauty of our Catholic faith and the power of Christ, as experienced at Newman and beyond. Contact [email protected] Being a Paulist Parish Did you know that Newman Hall-Holy Spirit Parish is staffed and led by of the ? Do you know who the Paulists are and their charisms? I’m proud that some can answer this question but realize we still need more education to help all in our parish understand we are different from other . God inspires the formation of each religious order to address certain needs of the Church and the world. As Paulists, we were founded in 1858 to address the thirst in America for excellence and self-fulfillment. Our founders, Fr. Hecker and his companions found this best satisfied through the Catholic faith, even in the midst of anti-Catholic sentiment among Americans who saw Catholicism as the faith of poor immigrants and folks who were clinging too much to Europe () instead of America. Fr. Hecker would be proud that we are ministering here at Berkeley. This area is ripe for evangelization, the spreading of the Good News of Jesus Christ through the intellectual and spiritual depth of Catholicism. After all, we are surrounded by ambitious, highly intelligent students and adults who tend to have tenuous and no religious affiliation. We are in a secular liberal environment where Catholicism is often looked down upon as another evil imperialism or a feel-good fairy tale for the weak-minded. So to be a Paulist parish, our ultimate focus cannot stop with our moving liturgies or excellent preaching or great works of social action or fabulous learning opportunities. These are all good and important steps to our end, but they are not our main goal. Rather as a Paulist parish, our goal is to share the Good News of Jesus Christ so as to bring others into a deeper, richer relationship with our Lord and God through our Catholic faith, so we all become disciples of Christ, Kingdom builders helping to continue Christ’s work of ushering God’s Kingdom in the world. All our great ministries help accomplish our main goal, but they are not the main goal in themselves. After all, Jesus told His disciples, “Go and make disciples of all nations.” We must always be about others, serving others and our God. Love after all is our verb, our reason for being. I just finished my 4-year term at Newman. I cannot believe it has been 4 years. Four years is the maximum years I’ve stayed in one place. So I’m pleased that I have been renewed for another 4 years. This is a grand opportunity for me and for us. I feel these past four years have been focused on healing the hurts and setbacks of the past and getting us back on track, being the great parish we know we are. I believe our bishop now knows that. He has told me he is very glad the Paulists are here in his diocese and leading the campus ministry at Cal. ↵
