Sunday: Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Am 7:12-15 Ps 85:9-14 Casting a Net Eph 1:3-14 Mk 6:7-13 ome of us have bad memories of being the last one chosen for the kickball game during Monday: school recess. Or we may have been overlooked at work when the boss chose somebody Ex 1:8-14,22 S else for the new position. Some of us may have trouble choosing what to eat at a Ps 124:1b-8 restaurant or choosing what to wear on a night out. Our choices, and other people’s choices, Mt 10:34—11:1 can have a big impact on our lives. Tuesday: We live in a culture of ‘choice’ where there are dozens of cereal options at the grocery store, Ex 2:1-15a hundreds of different shows & movies to stream on Netflix, and thousands of different shoes Ps 69:3,14,30-31, to buy on Amazon. It’s invigorating to have so many options and the power to choose how we 33-34 want, but it’s also overwhelming at times. What do we choose? And why are we choosing it? Mt 11:20-24 Our readings this week are all about being chosen and then making a choice. In our first Wednesday: reading, Amaziah the priest of Bethel tells Amos to get out of town. He’s stirring up too much St. Kateri trouble with his prophecy. Amos responds, I’m really just a shepherd. I didn’t choose to do all Tekakwitha this but God chose it for me. I’m just following God’s call. Ex 3:1-6,9-12 Ps 103:1b-4,6-7 In our second reading, St. Paul tells the Ephesians that God has chosen them, among others, to Mt 11:25-27 live in Christ, who was sent to them by the Father so that they may have life to its fullest. And in our Gospel reading, Jesus’s twelve apostles are chosen by Him to journey outward and cure Thursday: those who are ailing. The disciples chose to follow Jesus’s call; the Ephesians only sometimes. St. Bonaventure Ex 3:13-20 In these readings, Amos, the Ephesians, and the Apostles are chosen for some greater purpose. Ps 105:1,5,8-9, They are chosen to prophecy, to praise, and to heal. They didn’t get a choice in that. But they 24-27 did choose what they did after that. Just as God chose them, he chooses ALL of us for some Mt 11:28-30 greater purpose. And we can respond or not. Friday: What are you chosen for? And how will you respond? There are many Cathedral service Ex 11:10—12:14 opportunities about which you can discern. With COVID restrictions lifted and liturgical Ps 116:12-13,15, ministers coming back, the Cathedral is looking for people to serve as Eucharistic Ministers, 16bc,17-18 Altar Servers, Sacristans, Lectors, Ushers, and Greeters. We don’t get a choice in that, but we can 10-15 Mt 12:14-21 choose how to respond. If we choose God who first chose us, we usually choose the right path. Built 1875-85; initial design attributed to Jeremiah O’Rourke; upper walls of towers, c. 1900; “Conversion of Paul” bas-relief by Lumen Martin Winter, 1958 Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 1131, Lot 31 On June 11, 2013, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a hearing (Item No. 2) on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Church of St. Paul the Apostle and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site.1 The hearing was duly advertised according to provisions of law. Five people spoke in support of designation, including representatives of New York State Senator Brad Hoylman, Community Board 7, the Historic Districts Council, Landmark West! and the Society for the Architecture of the City. One person, representing Father Gilbert Martinez, CSP, spoke in opposition to designation. Summary The Church of St. Paul the Apostle, located at the southwest corner of Columbus Avenue and 60th Street in Manhattan, was built in 1875-85. Commissioned by the Missionary Society of St. Paul the Apostle, commonly called the Paulist Fathers, it is an austere and imposing Medieval Revival style design, loosely based on Gothic and Romanesque sources. The Paulists trace their origins to 1858 when Isaac Hecker traveled to Rome and received permission from Pope Pius IX to organize an American society of missionary priests. The following year, Archbishop John Hughes of New York asked Hecker’s group to establish a parish on Manhattan’s Upper West Side and a simple brick church was constructed.

Pedlar 2013 A Theology of Ecclesial Charisms With Special Reference to the Paulist Fathers and The Salvation Army James Edwin Pedlar Doctor of Philosophy in Theology University of St. Michael’s College 2013 ABSTRACT This project proposes a theology of “group charisms” and explores the implications of this concept for the question of the limits of legitimate diversity in the Church. The central claim of the essay is that a theology of ecclesial charisms can account for legitimately diverse specialized vocational movements in the Church, but it cannot account for a legitimate diversity of separated churches. The first major section of the argument presents a constructive theology of ecclesial charisms. The scriptural concept of charism is identified as referring to diverse vocational gifts of grace which are given to persons in the Church, and have an interdependent, provisional, and sacrificial character. Next, the relationship between charism and institution is specified as one of interdependence-in-distinction. Charisms are then identified as potentially giving rise to a multiplicity of diverse, vocationally-specialized movements in the Church, which are normatively distinguished from churches. The constructive argument concludes by claiming that the theology of ecclesial charisms as proposed supports visible, historic, organic unity.
