St. Thecla Orthodox Church Schedule August 2021 August 14–27: Dormition Fast The Dormition fast precedes the great feasts of the Transfiguration of the Lord (August 6/19) and the Dormition of the Mother of God (August 15/28). The fast lasts two weeks: August 14–27, n.s.). While not as strict as the Great Lenten fast, the Dormition Fast is stricter than both the Apostles’ and Nativity fasts. On Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays of the fast, the Church rubrics prescribe xe- rophagy, that is, the strictest fast of uncooked food (without oil); on Tuesdays and Thursdays, “with cooked food, but with no oil”; on Saturdays and Sundays wine and oil are allowed. Until the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, when grapes and apples are blessed in the churches, the Church requires that we abstain from these fruits. According to the tradition ofthe holy fathers,“If one of the brethren should eat the grapes before the feast, then let him be forbidden for obedience’s sake to taste of the grapes during the entire month of August.” On the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, the Church rubrics allow fish. After that day, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, the fruits of the new harvest would always be included in the meals. Sat Aug 14 Saturday of the Eighth Week after Pentecost. • Chapter 2 Orthodox Church Life A. Church Etiquette an Orthodox
chapter 2 Orthodox Church Life A. Church Etiquette The Church is the earthly heaven in which the heavenly God dwells and moves. An Orthodox Church is that part of God’s creation which has been set apart and “reclaimed” for the Kingdom of God. Within its walls, the heavenly and earthly realms meet, outside time, in the acts of worship and Sacrifice offered there to God. Angels assist the Priest during the Divine Liturgy, and Saints and members of the Church Triumphant participate in the Ser- vices. The Blessed Theotokos, the Mother of God, is also present and, of course, our Lord Jesus Christ is invisibly present wher- ever two or three gather in His Name, just as He is always present in the reserved Eucharist preserved on the Holy Table of most Orthodox Churches. Given these very significant spiritual realities, we should al- ways approach an Orthodox Church with the deepest attitude of reverence. Even when passing an Orthodox Church on foot or in a car, we always cross ourselves out of respect for the presence of God therein. It is, indeed, unthinkable that we should ever pass in front of an Orthodox Church without showing such rev- erence. Therefore, it is obvious that we must approach our meeting with the heavenly realm during Divine Services with careful and proper preparation. When preparing for Church, we should always dress as we would for a visit to an important dignitary. After all, we are about to enter into the very presence of God. Therefore, casual apparel is not appropriate. For example, shorts should never be St.

Every Sunday we remember the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The word “Liturgy” means work of the people which means everyone participates through singing, praying, hearing the teaching, and opening our hearts to allow God’s grace to enter. For those who have committed and are members of the Orthodox Faith (through Baptism and/or Chrismation) it also means, if prepared, the reception of Holy Communion. Preparation includes the Sacrament of Confession (7 years and older) within the last 2 months, prayer, being on time for church, being at peace with others, attending the Divine Liturgy regularly, and fasting (no food or drink from midnight the night before). If you are new, just visiting, or have any questions, please introduce yourself to Father Joe. Please know that everyone is invited to venerate the Holy Cross and receive Holy Bread at the end of Liturgy. All are welcome to our Coffee Fellowship in the hall after Liturgy. In the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom {The Golden-Mouth}, we sing these special hymns, Third Antiphon (during the Little Entrance) Troparion of the Resurrection—Tone 8 From the heights Thou didst descend, O compassionate One, and Thou didst submit to the three-day burial that Thou might deliver us from passion.

  • 03-25 Annunciation Matins on Good Friday.Musx
Matins propers, March 25, 2016 GREAT AND HOLY FRIDAY THE ANNUNCIATION OF THE MOTHER OF GOD AND EVER-VIRGIN MARY when, in the city of Nazareth, the angel of the Lord announced to Mary, "Behold, you will conceive and bear a son, and he will be called the Son of the Most High.” Mary said: "Behold the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word." And thus the fullness of time was accomplished, and he who before time was the only-begotten Son of God was made flesh for our sake and for our salvation, by the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became human. For parishes which desire to celebrate Matins for Great and Holy Friday, but do not wish to incorporate all the hymns of Annunciation Matins as described in the Typikon, the Inter- Eparchial Liturgical Commission recommends the following order of service. Matins of Great and Holy Friday is celebrated up to and including the seventh Passion Gospel. Then: Deacon: Let us be attentive! Priest: Peace be to all! Deacon: Wisdom! Be attentive! • Cycle of Services in the Eastern Orthodox Church Compiled by Archimandrite Nektarios Serfes
Cycle of Services in the Eastern Orthodox Church Compiled By Archimandrite Nektarios Serfes Introduction by Father Nektarios Serfes: Nothing is so spiritually uplifting, and so rewarding then prayer before God in the Church. The Orthodox Church has a cycle of services, and all of us should make every means to attend these services. It’s not really how long are these services, but what we put into them that is spiritually rewarding. When the Church calls us to prayer, we should rush with great Christian love to go to these services, and give our Lord God due honor and worship, at the same time we should think about our spiritual relationship with our God, and our path to our salvation. During these cycle of services we begin to realize how much our Lord God loves us, and wants us to be a part of His Kingdom. We can participate in His Kingdom in prayer, and we can behold His great spiritual beauty as we gaze around the Church and behold Him, as well as the opening arms of the Mother of God, the saints, the prophets, the apostles, and the martyrs all surrounding us with their prayers and intercession on our behalf, what a blessing! Then again preparations before the Divine Liturgy are spiritually necessary, and that is if when we will go to Holy Communion, we should consider speaking to our priest about going to Holy Confession. We also should fast from certain foods anticipation of receiving the Body and Blood of Christ, i.e. at the least, fast from meats on Wednesday and Friday, and all foods and liquids the morning of the liturgy unless these are deemed necessary for medical reasons.
