  • Maurice Wants Production from Third, Fourth Lines with Nine Players in the Mix, Bottom Six Looks Crowded
Winnipeg Free Press https://www.winnipegfreepress.com/sports/hockey/jets/maurice-wants-production-from-third- fourth-lines-452913503.html Maurice wants production from third, fourth lines With nine players in the mix, bottom six looks crowded By: Mike McIntyre It’s getting awfully crowded at the bottom for the Winnipeg Jets. But the team’s growing list of depth players — believed to be a strength headed into this season — have provided next to nothing when it comes to offence. That’s creating a frustrating situation for head coach Paul Maurice as he tries to figure out his lineup card these days, especially with a pair of injured forwards set to return and further cloud the situation. Consider this: the Jets' third and fourth lines have yet to score a goal in five-on-five play through seven games this year, in which they've managed to go 4-3-0. Brandon Tanev and Joel Armia each have a short-handed tally, while Andrew Copp assisted on a shorty scored by defenceman Tyler Myers. As for the rest of the lot, Shawn Matthias has no points through seven games despite ample chances. Nic Petan has been blanked in his six games, which has included plenty of power-play time. Marko Dano has nothing through five and Adam Lowry was kept off the scoresheet for four games prior to being injured. Brendan Lemieux has one game under his belt since being recalled from the Moose, while veteran Matt Hendricks has yet to play this season but is expected to be in the lineup Thursday when the Jets battle the Penguins in Pittsburgh.

  • Buffalo Sabres Digital Press
Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips January 7, 2017 Jets ride high-octane offense into matinee vs. Sabres Associated Press January 6, 2017 BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Winnipeg Jets have gotten off to an explosive start to the new year, and they're looking to end a three-game road trip on a high note Saturday when they take on the Buffalo Sabres. The two teams will meet in a matinee game at 1 p.m. After ending 2016 with back-to-back losses, Winnipeg's offense has been electric in 2017. The Jets (19-19-3) picked up a 6-4 win over Tampa Bay on Tuesday and a 4-1 victory over Florida one day later. "It feels really good. It's what we wanted to do on this road trip and we're off to a great start," center Bryan Little told the team's website. "We're getting rewarded offensively for playing the right way. We're not cheating for our chances, we're playing a simple game and we're taking advantage when we do get those chances." The Jets have benefited from balanced scoring across their top lines. Little had two assists in the 4-1 victory over the Panthers. Nikolaj Ehlers has eight goals in his last eight games, while rookie sensation Patrik Laine has continued his outstanding campaign with five points (two goals, three assists) in the two-game win streak. "It's been six games since we've been pretty close to the lineup that we thought we'd start the season with," Jets head coach Paul Maurice said.

  • Evaluating Team-Level Pace of Play in Ice Hockey Using Spatio-Temporal Possession Data
Playing Fast Not Loose: Evaluating team-level pace of play in ice hockey using spatio-temporal possession data David Yu*, Christopher Boucher, Luke Bornn, Mehrsan Javan SPORTLOGiQ, Montreal, Quebec, Canada *Email: [email protected] 1. Introduction Pace of play is an important characteristic in ice hockey as well as other team-invasion sports. While in basketball pace has traditionally been defined as the number of possessions per 48 minutes, here we focus on pace and movement within a possession, leveraging the tremendous advancements in the capture of spatio-temporal data in team sports in recent years [1]. While much attention has been focused on speed and distance covered at the player level, spatio-temporal datasets also allow for more granular definitions of team-level pace of play such as measures of the speed between successive events or the speed of a possession as a whole. While ice hockey has always been one of the fastest-moving sports, rule and tactical changes in the past 15 years, such as the removal of the rule limiting 2-line passes and the stricter enforcement of obstruction/holding infractions, have placed further emphasis on pace. At the start of the 2016-17 NHL season, Paul Maurice, head coach of the Winnipeg Jets said: "This game is just so fast now... I've seen fast players and I've seen fast teams, it's the first time I thought we had a fast league. The speed, to me, is the one thing that’s changed more than anything. Our team, and the league as well, is as fast as I’ve ever seen it.” [2] Given the emphasis on pace in hockey in recent years, it is surprising that a recent study found a slight negative correlation between various metrics of forward attacking pace and offensive output such as shots and goals [3].
