    MEDIA CLIPS Columbus Blue Jackets at Boston Bruins January 2, 2020 Columbus Blue Jackets Columbus Blue Jackets’ troubles in overtime tied to penalties By Jacob Myers – The Columbus Dispatch – December 31, 2019 Back in October when the Blue Jackets lost two games in overtime on back-to-back nights, John Tortorella didn’t hesitate to mention the importance of those additional points at the end of seasons when playoff spots are hanging in the balance. More than two months later, the Jackets have posted a 1-4 record in games decided in overtime or a shootout in December, prior to Tuesday night’s game against the Florida Panthers, while sitting six points out of the final wild card spot. In each of those overtime or shootout losses, the Jackets either lost on the penalty kill or had to kill one off. Three-on-three overtime can be a crapshoot, with its fast-paced nature and high frequency of odd-man rushes. But the improvement in those extra periods — and avoiding them entirely — starts with cutting out unnecessary penalties that have limited the Jackets’ ability to sustain any offense. "It's not so much getting back in the race, it's about winning the next game," Tortorella said Tuesday after morning skate. "It's about giving yourself a chance to win the game and not lose sitting in the box and taking more than two or three (penalties) during a game. Your whole bench is disrupted. It's hard to do." Overall, the Jackets are one of the least-penalized teams in the league.

A depth piece or two? Nothing at all? Winnipeg Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff says all options are on the table heading into Monday’s NHL trade deadline — and plenty of intrigue surrounds what the local squad might do. The Jets resemble a Stanley Cup contender and have the prime opportunity they’ve been building toward for years. "I couldn’t tell you with a crystal ball what we’re going to be talking about Monday with respect to additions, or not, with our group," Cheveldayoff said Tuesday in a wide-ranging conversation with the Free Press. Cheveldayoff made it clear that while he’s willing to move draft picks and prospects to help his team win now, there are a few untouchables. While he wouldn’t identify them by name, one has to think young players such as Kyle Connor, Jack Roslovic and 2017 first-round pick Kristian Vesalainen might be among them. "We have assets within this organization — whether they’re picks or prospects — and there’s going to be a threshold that will be determined as to whether we will use them or not," Cheveldayoff said. "There’s some assets within our organization that I will not use. If there’s the right fit, and the right deal, then certainly I’d be willing to do that.

    PREGAME NOTES 2019 TIM HORTONS NHL HERITAGE CLASSIC WINNIPEG JETS vs. CALGARY FLAMES MOSAIC STADIUM, REGINA, SASK. – OCT. 26, 2019 JETS, FLAMES FACE OFF OUTDOORS The Winnipeg Jets and Calgary Flames face off tonight in the 2019 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic (10 p.m. ET / 8 p.m. CST, CBC, SN1, CITY, TVAS2, NBCSN) – the League’s 28th regular-season outdoor game and fifth in the Heritage Classic series. The Jets and Flames each have participated in one prior outdoor game, both under the Heritage Classic umbrella. Winnipeg played host to the 2016 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic at Investors Group Field, falling 3-0 to the Edmonton Oilers. Nine Jets players who appeared in that game remain with the team: Kyle Connor, Nikolaj Ehlers, Connor Hellebuyck, Patrik Laine, Adam Lowry, Josh Morrissey, Mathieu Perreault, Mark Scheifele and Blake Wheeler. Current Calgary goaltender Cam Talbot started for Edmonton in that contest, stopping all 31 shots he faced for the third shutout in outdoor NHL game history. Current Jets forward Mark Letestu scored the winning goal (while shorthanded), as a member of the Oilers. And current Flames forward Milan Lucic recorded two penalty minutes for Edmonton. Calgary served as hosts for the 2011 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic at McMahon Stadium, defeating the Montreal Canadiens 4-0. Two players who appeared in that game remain with the Flames: Mikael Backlund and Mark Giordano. Overall, the Jets feature 11 players who have participated in a prior outdoor NHL game (minimum: 1 GP in 2019-20), while the Flames have four. Talbot leads that group with four such appearances, though he served as a backup goaltender for three of them (2014 SS w/ NYR [2 GP], 2019 SS w/ PHI).

Laine scored twice — ho hum, what else is new? — and assisted on another to lead the Jets to a 3-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes as they kicked off a six-game road trip. It's the second straight game, and third time in four, the Finnish sniper has lit the lamp twice as he continues to climb up the NHL record book in addition to helping his team gather valuable points in the playoff race. "I can feel it, when the game is going to be like that, when you’re going to get a lot of chances," the 19-year-old said following the game. With 35 goals so far this season, Laine is now up to 71 in his career. That puts him sixth for goals scored by a teenager in NHL history. Jimmy Carson leads the way with 92, and Laine said earlier Sunday he had visions of leading that list when all was said and done. We think he was joking, considering there are just 17 regular-season games left in the season, after which he will turn 20.
