    Kevin Sheehan’s 2011 Top 30 It’s over a month since the NAB AFL Draft Combine was held at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne to scrutinise the talent pool. The event tested agility, speed and skills. Meanwhile the endurance testing was a highlight, with many record breaking performances. Now our focus is on the NAB AFL Draft which for the first time, be held in Sydney and will welcome 18 AFL clubs, including the newest club the Greater Western Sydney Giants. In the last month AFL Recruiting Managers and their teams have watched endless edited highlights of prospects; absorbed countless numbers relating to the speed, endurance, effective kicks, efficiently rates and clearances, studied medical reports and conducted interviews not just with the players, but with coaches, parents and teachers. It now comes down to opinions – human judgements on which players, in the view of the individual clubs, have what’s necessary to make a difference at the elite level. The computer in this instance won’t provide the answer but sports science helps with decisions. Who has the greater ball-winning ability, decision-making and skill execution? Who has the competitive edge and sufficient athleticism to be chosen for a professional AFL career? Who will grow and develop most in the AFL club environment? What we do know is that more than 90 players can be given the chance (there will be passes late in the draft to leave room for preseason draft selections in late December) and only father-son selections and upgraded rookies can be certain of their destination.

They are designed to build on the pre-reading skills of oral language and phonological awareness needed for reading success. The books support the learning of letter-sounds and blending in a sequential phonic order, helping students to develop their independent decoding skills. The books also contain limited high frequency words that need to be taught before reading the book. The questions and activities focus on increasing a student’s vocabulary and fluency and encourage the student to make deeper connections with the author’s message. The footy game (135 words) Before reading the book, use the practice page to: 1. Revise the alternative spellings for sounds 2. Teach the blending of letter-sounds in regular words The student points to each letter or combination of letters, saying the sound they represent. Swipe left to right under the letters, saying the sounds quickly and smoothly together to read the word. e.g. p-i-le is ‘pile’; j-o-ke is ‘joke’; f-oo-t-y is ‘footy’. During single word practice, check that the student understands the meaning of the word. If the student is having difficulty hearing the word when blending: • repeat the sounds more than once in succession to help the student ‘hear’ the word • model stretching the sounds together without pauses, e.g. nnnniiiiiip, is ‘nip’ • use letter tiles and push them together while saying the sounds. 3. Teach the high frequency words Tell the student the words and determine any ‘tricky’ parts by breaking up the word into its sounds.

    CPI2 ENGLISH 2018 Australian Rules Football Read the text and answer the questions Australians are proud of a popular national winter sport fondly referred to as Aussie Rules but also known as Australian football, Australian rules football, football and footy. Since the earliest known football matches held in the 1800s this popular spectator sport is now played in more than thirty countries around the world including Japan, Argentina, Spain, South Africa, Pakistan, Indonesia, France, India, China, Canada, North America, Britain, Sweden and Germany. It is a fast paced contact sport whereby two opposing teams, playing on an oval shaped grass field, score goals and points by passing the ball between four posts at either end of the field. With no offside rules players can go anywhere on the field and propel the ball in any direction. Each team of eighteen players uses a variety of kicking, handball and running strategies to score goals between the middle posts and points between a goal post and a smaller post known as the behind post. Each goal is worth 6 points and the combined goals and points make up the final score. Australians love watching their footy. The crowd goes crazy when players show skill and talent in taking possession of the ball and scoring.
