Lessons Learned from the Netflix Contest Arthur Dunbar Background ● From Wikipedia: – “The Netflix Prize was an open competition for the best collaborative filtering algorithm to predict user ratings for films, based on previous ratings without any other information about the users or films, i.e. without the users or the films being identified except by numbers assigned for the contest.” ● Two teams dead tied for first place on the test set: – BellKor's Pragmatic Chaos – The Ensemble ● Both are covered here, but technically BellKor won because they submitted their algorithm 20 minutes earlier. This even though The Ensemble did better on the training set (barely). ● Lesson one learned! Be 21 minutes faster! ;-D – Don't feel too bad, that's the reason they won the competition, but the actual test set data was slightly better for them: ● BellKor RMSE: 0.856704 ● The Ensemble RMSE: 0.856714 Background ● Netflix dataset was 100,480,507 date-stamped movie rating performed by anonymous Netflix customers between December 31st 1999 and December 31st 2005. (Netflix has been around since 1997) ● This was 480,189 users and 17,770 movies Background ● There was a hold-out set of 4.2 million ratings for a test set consisting of the last 9 movies rated by each user that had rated at lest 18 movies. – This was split in to 3 sets, Probe, Quiz and Test ● Probe was sent out with the training set and labeled ● Quiz set was used for feedback. The results on this were published along the way and they are what showed upon the leaderboard ● Test is what they actually had to do best on to win the competition. -

1 Chapter 1. Origins of Mac OS X "Most ideas come from previous ideas." Alan Curtis Kay The Mac OS X operating system represents a rather successful coming together of paradigms, ideologies, and technologies that have often resisted each other in the past. A good example is the cordial relationship that exists between the command-line and graphical interfaces in Mac OS X. The system is a result of the trials and tribulations of Apple and NeXT, as well as their user and developer communities. Mac OS X exemplifies how a capable system can result from the direct or indirect efforts of corporations, academic and research communities, the Open Source and Free Software movements, and, of course, individuals. Apple has been around since 1976, and many accounts of its history have been told. If the story of Apple as a company is fascinating, so is the technical history of Apple's operating systems. In this chapter,[1] we will trace the history of Mac OS X, discussing several technologies whose confluence eventually led to the modern-day Apple operating system. Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? Caught in a landslide, no escape from reality” (Queen, “Bohemian Rhapsody”). Abstract The following article explores different conceptions of fantasy and science fiction that characterized many popular music performances in the 1970’s predominantly in the genres of glam rock and funk. By focusing on a few artists that were at the peak of their music careers at this time, such as David Bowie, P-Funk, Queen, Labelle and others, it attempts to un-earth some historical conditions for women, queers, and people of color and reveal how these artists have attempted to escape and transform certain realities by transgressing the boundaries of real/fiction, masculinity/ femininity, race, sexuality, and the “alien”. Accessibility Features on Macintosh There are several options already available to users of all abilities who own Macintosh computers. There are 4 categories of access offered on a Mac: Literacy and learning; vision; hearing; and physical and motor skills. Literacy and Learning - features are built-in and accommodate learning disabilities to improve productivity and academic performance. Features include : Text to speech, spaces, grammar and spelling check, word completion, Finder, iCal, and Grapher. Vision - features are built-in and allow visually impaired and blind persons to access the computer. Features include: VoiceOver, screen magnification, text to speech, and refreshable Braille display support. Hearing - features are built-in to facilitate deaf or hard of hearing persons with tools to access the computer. Features include : iChat, closed captioning, Photo Booth, GarageBand, and screen flashes for when an alert sounds. Physical and Motor Skills- features are built-in and provide support through keyboard, mouse, or trackpad for people with motor skill or physical challenges. Features include : Automator, sticky keys (key combinations in sequence instead of simultaneous), slow keys (adds a delay between key strokes to avoid mistakes), mouse keys (using buttons on the keyboard instead of trackpad or mouse), multi- touch trackpad, Inkwell, and keyboard shortcuts. To change/view accessibility options on your Mac: Go to System Preferences and select Universal Access located at the bottom right under the “System” category. -

Abstract When Netflix launched in April 1998, Internet video was in its infancy. Eighteen years later, Netflix has developed into the first truly global Internet TV network. Many books have been written about the five broadcast networks – NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, and the CW – and many about the major cable networks – HBO, CNN, MTV, Nickelodeon, just to name a few – and this is the fitting time to undertake a detailed analysis of how Netflix, as the preeminent Internet TV networks, has come to be. This book, then, combines historical, industrial, and textual analysis to investigate, contextualize, and historicize Netflix's development as an Internet TV network. The book is split into four chapters. The first explores the ways in which Netflix's development during its early years a DVD-by-mail company – 1998-2007, a period I am calling "Netflix as Rental Company" – lay the foundations for the company's future iterations and successes. During this period, Netflix adapted DVD distribution to the Internet, revolutionizing the way viewers receive, watch, and choose content, and built a brand reputation on consumer-centric innovation. -

In such processes, the thermal energy required for the endothermic reaction is supplied by concentrated solar energy and the hydrogen production routes differ as a function of the feedstock resource. While hydrogen production should still rely on carbonaceous feedstocks in a transition period, thermochemical water-splitting using metal oxide redox reactions is considered to date as one of the most attractive methods in the long-term to produce renewable H2 for direct use in fuel cells or further conversion to synthetic liquid hydrocarbon fuels. The two-step redox cycles generally consist of the endothermic solar thermal reduction of a metal oxide releasing oxygen with concentrated solar energy used as the high-temperature heat source for providing reaction enthalpy; and the exothermic oxidation of the reduced oxide with H2O to generate H2. This approach requires the development of redox-active and thermally-stable oxide materials able to split water with both high fuel productivities and chemical conversion rates. The main relevant two-step metal oxide systems are commonly based on volatile (ZnO/Zn, SnO2/SnO) and non-volatile redox pairs (Fe3O4/FeO, ferrites, CeO2/CeO2 δ, perovskites).
