  • Sarah Haley, No Mercy Here: Gender, Punishment, and the Making of Jim Crow Modernity (University of North Carolina Press, 2016)
No Mercy Here 181 BOOK REVIEW Sarah Haley, No Mercy Here: Gender, Punishment, and the Making of Jim Crow Modernity (University of North Carolina Press, 2016) Viviane Saleh-Hanna* arah Haley’s NO MERCY HERE: GENDER, PUNIShmENT, AND THE MAKIng of Jim Crow Modernity is a beautifully written, empirical yet nuanced account of imprisoned and paroled Black women’s lives, deaths, and Sstruggles under convict leasing, chain gang, and parole regimes in Georgia at the turn of the twentieth century. Although the majority of Haley’s book focuses on Black women, she notes that 18 percent of Black female prison- ers were not yet 17 years old (42). One prisoner was 11 years old (96) at the time of her sentencing. The majority were young adults, many in their early twenties, some remaining imprisoned for decades. All, regardless of age, were sentenced to hard labor. Haley ties together wide-ranging archival data gathered from criminal justice agency reports and proceedings, government-sponsored commissions to examine prison and labor conditions, petitions and clemency applica- tions, letters, newspaper articles, era-specific research, Black women’s blues, historic speeches, and other social movement materials. This breadth of data coupled with Haley’s Black feminist analysis and methodology unearths the issues of Black women’s imprisonment, abuse, rape, and forced labor under Jim Crow’s carceral push into modernity. Haley also presents records of white women’s imprisonment, as well as their living and labor conditions, and discusses the responses these elicited from politicians, criminal justice agents, social organizations, and media outlets. Though the number of white women ensnared within Georgia’s * Viviane Saleh-Hanna is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Crime and Justice Studies at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth.

Travers Scott, Committee Chair Dr. Erin Ash Dr. Darren Linvill ABSTRACT For a long time, professional wrestling has existed on the outskirts of society, with the idea that it was just for college-aged men. With the rise of the popularity of the World Wrestling Entertainment promotion, professional wrestling entered the mainstream. Celebrities often appear at wrestling shows, and the WWE often hires mainstream musical artists to perform at their biggest shows, WrestleMania and Summer Slam. Despite this still-growing popularity, there still exists a gap between men’s wrestling and women’s wrestling. Often the women aren’t allowed long match times, and for the longest time sometimes weren’t even on the main shows.

No Mercy. The story of a soldier girl Word count= 4310 words. Author: Chantal Edie Ntube The Forecast forum. The protest that started timidly in 2016 has turned into a civil war between the military and armed separatist. The villages along the roads have become deserted with the smell of burnt houses lingering the air. Muyuka was once a peaceful village, okay not totally, certainly not the safest place on earth but it was made of people who hustled their day out and in to provide for their loved ones. But nothing ever prepared this vibrantly hot village for what visited them in 2018. A mishap that would change the life of a young girl called Blessing. Agatha had just returned from the farm, all her thoughts were on peeling the cassava she had just harvested and steeping it in the basin she had asked her children to fill. She was emptying the cassava peelings in the nearby bush when she noticed her shadow was indicating the time to be 5pm as per usual to her, She looked left, then right and far ahead, putting her hand on her forehead to shadow from the scotching sun heating the town of Muyuka this early may. She put her thumb in her mouth and raised it to the sky, she spat out realizing the dirt she has just put in her mouth. That made her laugh recollecting how her mother always said „ dirty no di kill black man” In doing that, she was trying to determine if she had to ask her children to remove the laundry from the lining or just let it dry out through the night.

Simpkins Master of Arts in African American Studies University of California, Los Angeles, 2016 Professor Sarah Haley, Chair This project endeavors to make an intervention in the discourse of carceral analysis by unapologetically placing the experiences of Black women at center while moving beyond the concrete and barbed wire walls of State and Federal prison facilities to explore the ways in which the public sphere is transformed into a carceral space. Approaching incarceration in this way illuminates areas that are not often considered when imprisonment is the subject matter at hand. Gendering the phenomenon of incarceration also permits carcerality to be conceptualized in alternative and various geographical spaces and locations, as opposed to being limited to static

Cubed Circle Newsletter Issue 229 – It's Here Everybody! Say what you will about the build to WrestleMania 32, or even recent WrestleManias in general; I don't think that many would argue with the idea that WrestleMania Weekend is the best time of the year to be a wrestling fan – perhaps only rivalled by the G1 Climax. If you are a fan of professional wrestling there will be something for you to enjoy this weekend, of that you can be sure. We have a light issue for everyone this week, as we get ready for one of our best and biggest issues of the year in our annual WrestleMania issue next week. As always, Ben covers all of the news in the Pro-Wres Digest, as well as coverage of the go-home edition of RAW from Monday night! – Ryan Clingman, Cubed Circle Newsletter Editor The Pro-Wres Digest for March 27th – April 1st. @BenCarass. Top Stories: We unfortunately have some heartbreaking news to start what is the biggest week of the year for pro wrestling, as 32 year-old British wrestler Kris Travis tragically passed away after an 18 month battle with stomach cancer on 31/3. Travis was diagnosed with the disease in October 2014 and had to pull out of the second season of TNA British Bootcamp because of the diagnosis. In 2015 he underwent surgery to remove a tumour and a part of his stomach then went through 18 weeks of intensive chemotherapy, which appeared to put him on the road to recovery. Travis defied all doctors expectations and returned to the ring at a Preston City Wrestling show on August 7th 2015.
