Summary: In the following report an overview is given of the known propagation of Pseu datemelia species in our working area, based on lists and maps of places of observation. This valuation is based on the collection of Rhineland-Westphalian Lepidoptera in the LÖBBECKE-Museum and Aquazoo, Düsseldorf, the Rhineland collection in the Zoological Re search Institute and Museum Alexander Koenig, Bonn, and my own collection. Literatur: J ä c k h , E. SYSTEMATICS OF THE MEGADIVERSE SUPERFAMILY GELECHIOIDEA (INSECTA: LEPIDOPTEA) DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for The Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Sibyl Rae Bucheli, M.S. ***** The Ohio State University 2005 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Dr. John W. Wenzel, Advisor Dr. Daniel Herms Dr. Hans Klompen _________________________________ Dr. Steven C. Passoa Advisor Graduate Program in Entomology ABSTRACT The phylogenetics, systematics, taxonomy, and biology of Gelechioidea (Insecta: Lepidoptera) are investigated. This superfamily is probably the second largest in all of Lepidoptera, and it remains one of the least well known. Taxonomy of Gelechioidea has been unstable historically, and definitions vary at the family and subfamily levels. In Chapters Two and Three, I review the taxonomy of Gelechioidea and characters that have been important, with attention to what characters or terms were used by different authors. I revise the coding of characters that are already in the literature, and provide new data as well. Chapter Four provides the first phylogenetic analysis of Gelechioidea to include molecular data. I combine novel DNA sequence data from Cytochrome oxidase I and II with morphological matrices for exemplar species. The results challenge current concepts of Gelechioidea, suggesting that traditional morphological characters that have united taxa may not be homologous structures and are in need of further investigation. Resolution of this problem will require more detailed analysis and more thorough characterization of certain lineages. To begin this task, I conduct in Chapter Five an in- depth study of morphological evolution, host-plant selection, and geographical distribution of a medium-sized genus Depressaria Haworth (Depressariinae), larvae of ii which generally feed on plants in the families Asteraceae and Apiaceae.

2010, Entomologist’s Gazette 61: 207–221 Notes on the early stages of four species of Oecophoridae, Gelechiidae and Pyralidae (Lepidoptera) in the British Isles R. J. HECKFORD 67 Newnham Road, Plympton, Plymouth, Devon PL7 4AW,U.K. Synopsis Descriptions are given of the early stages of Pseudatemelia josephinae (Toll, 1956), Argolamprotes micella ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775), Hypatima rhomboidella (Linnaeus, 1758) and Pyrausta cingulata (Linnaeus, 1758). Key words: Lepidoptera, Oecophoridae, Gelechiidae, Pyralidae, Pseudatemelia josephinae, Argolamprotes micella, Hypatima rhomboidella, Pyrausta cingulata, ovum, larva. Pseudatemelia josephinae (Toll, 1956) (Oecophoridae) It appears that the only descriptions of the ovum, larva and life-cycle in the British literature are those given by Langmaid (2002a: 103–104) and these are stated to be based on those by Heylaerts (1884: 150). Heylaerts’ paper begins by referring to an account of the larva given by Fologne (1860: 102–103), under the name Oecophora flavifrontella ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775), now Pseudatemelia flavifrontella. Heylaerts also uses the name Oecophora flavifrontella but Langmaid follows Jäckh (1959: 174–184) in attributing Heylaerts’ description to Pseudatemelia josephinae, then an undescribed species. Although neither Fologne nor Heylaerts gives any indication of localities, because they published their accounts in a Belgian periodical I presume that both found the species in that country. After P. josephinae was described in 1956 it was found to occur in Belgium. Fologne (1860: 102–103) states that he found cases in May on the trunks of ‘hêtres’, beech trees (Fagus sylvatica L.), onto which he assumed they had climbed towards evening to eat and that during the day they remain concealed amongst dry leaves.

LVOVSKY А.Л. A.L. Lvovsky, Zoological Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences, 1 Universitetskaya Emb., St Petersburg 199034, Russia. E-mail: [email protected] A new eastern-palaearctic monotypic genus of the gelechioid moths, Paralypusa gen. nov., is established for the Chinese species Paralypusa chinensis (Lvovsky, 2010), comb. nov. This genus is considered closely related to Lypusa Zeller, 1852 on the base of several synapomor- phies. However Paralypusa also shares some features with the genera Pseudatemelia Rebel, 1910 and Amphisbatis Zeller, 1870. Its transitional state confirms the belonging of all the afore- mentioned genera to one family and synonymy of the Lypusidae Herrich-Schäffer, 1857 and Amphisbatidae Spuler, 1910 (Nieukerken et al., 2011). Lypusi- dae Herrich-Schäffer, 1857 and Amphisbatidae Spuler, 1910 (Nieukerken et al., 2011).

  • Sherwood Forest Lepidoptera Species List
Sherwood Forest Lepidoptera Historical and modern species lists and records - First Edition 2009 T. and D. Pendleton Introduction to Sherwood Forest Lepidoptera First edition 2009 One aspect of recording which has not changed since the 1800’s, is the lack of attention given by Lepidopterists to the site’s micro lepidoptera. Virtually all This publication is aimed at providing an accurate record of all Sherwood Forest micro records sourced from Carr’s book were attributed to R.E. Brameld, who Lepidoptera recorded from the 1800‘s, the 1900’s, post-2000 records and must have spent many hours in the field recording. Without his work, then much completely up to date with the inclusion of the latest records from 2008 and larger gaps would have appeared in the records. As it is, much work is still follows the same format as we have used in the accompanying publication required to record the many leaf-mining species which Sherwood Forest Sherwood Forest Coleoptera - 2009 Edition. undoubtedly holds. It is by no means a complete list and should not be treated as so, but Recent Lepidoptera surveys and recording represents a hopeful start on the way to producing a definitive Sherwood Forest site list, by trying to gather all available Lepidoptera records in one document. A great deal of moth trapping and recording took place at the Visitor Centre during the 1980’s and has provided some very useful data, which at some time This is the first edition of this project and includes traceable public records in the future, will perhaps be used to enable a comparison with more recent and those held privately by local naturalists and our thanks go to those records and numbers.

124 JOURNAL OF THE LEPIDOPTERISTS' SOCIETY THE STATUS OF THE GLYPHIPTERIGIDAE AND A REASSESSMENT OF RELATIONSHIPS IN YPONOMEUTOID FAMILIES AND DITRYSIAN SUPERFAMILIESl JOHN B. HEPPNER2 Department of Entomology and Nematology, IFAS, University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida 32611 Current studies of the North American Glyphipterigidae have revealed major fundamental morphological and behavioral characters which dem onstrate that the inclusion of thc choreutid and glyphipterigid groups within a single family is untenable. The discordant characters involved have been shown in the past by other workers to be so fundamentally and evolutionarily conservative in Lepidoptera phylogeny that it is not even possible to consider the two groups to have evolved within the same superfamily, Glyphipterigid moths have long been considered of unusual interest because of apparent affinities to the Yponomeutidae and the Sesiidae, as well as to the Tortricidae. Most early workers considered them as dis tinct groups: the choreutids were placed with the tortricids and the glyphipterigids sensu stricto were placed among the tineoid moths. This segregation was rarely altered until Meyrick (1914) combined them into one family. Meyrick's classification was based largely on general facies-the two groups share a number of superficial characters-and not fundamental relationships. He also relied strongly on wing venation and did not use genitalia, internal morphology or larval characters. He formed a conglomeration of what now are no less than nine distinct families in several superfamilies, although he realized the true affinities of many of the included genera in later years. Current revisionary studies on the choreutids and glyphipterigids, using modern systematic tech niques, are revealing the true affinities of these moths.
