When Jesus sent his disciples on mission, while instructing them along the pathways of Judea, Luke 9:1-2 states, “he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.” The desire of The Awakening Church is to raise up disciples who continue to proclaim and demonstrate the kingdom of God with power and authority. In order to forward the gospel’s message and ministry to the broken, including those who are affluent, kingdom-laboring disciples must find freedom in Christ and operate fully with the abundant joy, divine guidance and real-time empowerment of the Holy Spirit. This project seeks to enhance the current disciple-making strategy by embracing the development of a spiritual deliverance and healing ministry within the local body and for the valley. As part of The Christian and Missionary Alliance (C&MA) denominational movement, the historical emphasis on the four-fold gospel of Jesus is central – Jesus is Savior, Sanctifier, Healer and Coming King. Jesus as Divine Healer will take a renewed emphasis in the life of the church and the fulfillment of the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20). To make disciples of all nations we engage both the natural and spiritual worlds. Both are equally real when it comes to meeting the challenges and seizing the opportunities associated with our culture. Ongoing Healing 119 9. “ROOTED” Strongholds 126 vi GLOSSARY Deliverance – A Christ-centered ministry practice of freeing individuals from spiritual bondage caused by unseen demonic spirits afflicting the mind, will and emotions. The ministry practice can be initiated by a devout Christian exercising the authority of Jesus Christ who defeated Satan through his atoning death on the cross and resurrection. Deliverance includes counseling of the whole person, prayer and the expelling of demons as needed. It is different than exorcism which relies on formalized rituals and often secretive acts of appointed clergy within high churches. Demonization – The state of being troubled by demonic spirits, whether outward or inward, and passively coming under the direct influence of their lies, accusations, sickness and supernatural control. Demonization comes from the Greek word “daimonízomai,” but should not be mistakenly translated as “being demon-possessed” because no demon has ownership of an individual. Rather the word means to “have a demon” which can manifest itself in various ways causing physical, psychological, volitional or sometimes mental disorder within a person’s life. Inner Healing – A term generally reflecting the broad and deep-level healing work of Jesus Christ for the whole person. It includes addressing the brokenness of painful events, suppressed memories, unforgiveness of others, debilitating depression and personal condemnation. Healing is brought about by biblical counseling establishing self-worth on a believer’s identity in Christ, his presence in all life circumstances and his power to set a captive sinner free. Damaging thoughts and feelings are replaced with truth, the mindset of Christ and his unconditional love. Spiritual Warfare – The ongoing fight to resist Satan and the evil works of his fallen angels in the invisible world as they try to thwart God’s purposes and oppress humans in the visible world. It is not a battle over power, but an active engagement of enforcing the authority of Christ upon demons. Warfare includes strategic encounters with both higher- level spirits overseeing spiritual realms, territories and institutions and also lower-level demons afflicting individuals through the mindset of the world, the sinful nature, and by direct attacks of the devil’s demons themselves. Stronghold – Used as a general term to designate any area where the enemy Satan still has some control over a person’s life. This control may stem from a pattern of ongoing sin, an external attack by a demonic spirit or the internal attachment of a demon to a part of the body, mind, will, or emotions. Bondage to spiritual strongholds are broken foremostly through repentance, prayer, obedience and embracing the truth and power of Christ to set a person free. Strongholds which carry demonic attachment often require deeper inner healing ministry and even deliverance. vii PART ONE MINISTRY CONTEXT INTRODUCTION Unfamiliar environments often create anxiety, especially when special protocol and decorum are in order. Whether it be a formal dinner invitation for a casual soul or a third world experience for a member of the social elite, we can all identify with being a bit uncomfortable in foreign settings. What should one wear, how should one act, and what should one say or be thinking are a few questions weighing on the mind of a novice sojourner in uncharted terrain. Questions arise, and our internal reservations throttle our external engagement when confronted with unfamiliar lifestyles and activities. Associated beliefs and practices are also avoided, if possible, and flight back to our own tastes for life are made as soon as possible. The same is true when asking a person who lives solely in the natural realm to attend to the realities of the supernatural dimension of life. Such a pursuit looms as a foreign subject matter to avoid. To contemplate, investigate and discuss the unseen spiritual world breeds apprehension and anxiety; it is an unfamiliar environment. We may believe in the existence of the supernatural, but our preference is to not visit the reality or give it much attention. Regrettably, engagement with the invisible spiritual realm has become an uncommon practice for the majority of Christians in the western world. But it should not be so. Encountering the unseen things in this visible world is not only given little attention in our modern ministry portfolios, but it is not even a subject of discussion or belief in most churches.

    In Christianity , deliverance ministry refers to the activity of cleansing a person of demons and evil spirits in order to address problems manifesting in their life as a result of the presence of said entities and the root causes of their authority to oppress the person. Adherents to this theological concept attribute physical, psychological, spiritual and emotional problems that people suffer to the activities of the oppressing spirits following the example of Jesus Christ given in the gospel . The practices and many of the underlying beliefs of these ministries are not accepted by all Christians. Methods Deliverance ministries focus on casting out the spirit or spirits believed to cause an affliction. The method of casting out varies. Some adherents directly recite Biblical examples in prayer intended to command a demon to depart an afflicted person, and do not believe an ordained clergy is required to perform the deliverance. Ministries also organize the removal from homes of items that are believed to harbor demons, including fantasy or horror novels , and artworks / artifacts depicting pagan gods .[citation needed ] Members are instructed to burn items that are related to idol worship, "demon drawing" symbols and music that summons demons. Although Rev. Don Jeffrey, An exorcist in Arizona states that any and all of these objects should be exorcised of any evil spirits and blessed before burning them or sending them to the dump. An Ouija board is a perfect example of this. It acts like a gateway for the demonic and must be exorcised and blessed, the gate must be closed before it is destroyed.

This person had received Jesus Christ as Savior and I had baptized her tile previous Easter. Now, after three a~nbulal~cetrips in two days to the local hospital, she was in the psychiatric ward suffering from seizures, edaaustion, and the awareness of a presence in her that was tl-rreatening,malicious, and dangerous. Little did she know that this signalled the begin~~ingof inner healing and the expulsio~aof many evil spirits. Much less did I know that it also launched a personal odyssey which wouid take me into three symbiotic experiences: the hands-on pastoral practice of what is usually called 'deliverance ministry';' a major theological research project i~iquiringinto the dernonizatioii and exorcism of persons from ara Anabaptist-Mennonite per~pective;~and an intense and life-threatening battle with evil spirits in my own life. These varied influences have deeply shaped my present understanding of the spiritual, theological, and pastoral foundations which undergird the Christian practice of deliverance (exorcistic) healing.     Dear Friends, Recently I was asked to make a statement about the use of authority in the Unbound model. It has come to my attention that certain individuals have been critical of Unbound in their teaching, and that this criticism has negatively influenced several people who are doing Unbound ministry. In this letter, I will present a response to some of the criticism and explain the biblical and theological basis for our methodology within a Catholic framework. I intend to present my position with clarity in the hope that I can find common ground with those who disagree. For those who may be unfamiliar with Unbound ministry, our teaching and ministry is based upon Five Keys: Repentance and Faith, Forgiveness, Renunciation, Authority, and the Father’s Blessing. The Controversy over Authority (the Fourth Key). Over the years I have encountered some people who promote the idea that a lay person cannot command evil spirits to leave a person to whom they are ministering. This idea seemed to be a response to the experience of demonic confrontations during exorcism and to reflect the fear that a layperson may become vulnerable to spiritual attack or reprisal if he or she gives a command. There have also been abuses in deliverance ministry over the years that have provoked many valid pastoral concerns for the protection of God’s people. When these pastoral concerns were misinterpreted, misunderstood, or over accentuated, vague and overreaching theological reasoning about lay people and their authority developed without a proper review. This, combined with an unhealthy fear of the devil and a misplaced sense of obedience, has created a cloud of suspicion regarding the Catholicity of our teaching that lay people can command evil spirits to leave a person in the context of Unbound.

BADÉ A Biblical and Theological Foundation for a Seventh-day Adventist Practical Approach to Deliverance Ministry Introduction The Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church believes that during Christ’s earthly ministry Jesus had victory in all his encounters with Satan and his demonic forces (Ministerial Association 2005:149). Adventists argue that although “spiritual wickedness in heavenly places” (Eph 6:12) still exists with Satan roaring today like a lion seeking whom he may “devour” (1 Pet 5:8) or operating with discretion and subtlety like a snake seeking whom he may “deceive” (Gen 3:1, Matt 10:16, Rev 12:9), every disciple of Christ can be empowered by the Holy Spirit to have victory over the deceptive, destructive power, and malice of Satan and demons. Unfortunately, the biblically sound doctrinal statement on “Christian Spiritual Warfare” (Ministerial Association 2005:149) that clearly empha- sizes Christ’s dominant authority and power over Satan and his agents has been a source of debate, dissension, and polemics concerning its prac- tical aspects in some Adventists quarters (see Biblical Research Institute 1983; Koranteng-Pipim 2005:163–205). Objectives The first goal of this article is to suggest an holistic approach for a “Practical Spiritual Warfare and Deliverance Ministry” that can be in conformity with the 28th Fundamental Belief (Growing in Christ) of the Seventh-day Adventist Church that was voted during the 2005 General Conference Session in St. Louis, Missouri. To meet that overarching goal, this article will ground its suggestions on two principles that are impor- tant to Seventh-day Adventists.

Dr.Gerrit van Veuren When Jesus told His disciples to heal the sick and cast out demons, I believe He intended them to do just that – heal the sick and cast out demons! However, in common with most of my contemporaries who were nurtured and reared in the latter half of the previous century, I was taught nothing about the healing and deliverance ministry. Some fifteen years ago my ministry took a turn when I was confronted with a demon-possessed woman who I could not help. I knew she was sick and in bondage, but I was unable to deliver her from the demonic strongholds in her life. Later I realised that there were actually many such cases before her, but I was neither capable to recognise nor equipped to handle the situations. I felt so inadequate and realised the need for deliverance ministry. I enrolled for postgraduate studies in psychology and counselling. I researched everything I could lay my hands on about spiritual warfare, demonization, deliverance and counselling. I even crossed conventional borders to study the occult and other religions. However one thing transpired; I discovered that the body of Christ found it difficult to accept that our Lord intended to minister beyond conversion, to heal the deep hidden things from the past that are harboured in our soul. I believe that Satan hides the truth of deliverance ministry from pastors and ministers to keep believers in sickness and poverty. However God knows that only after believers have been delivered, can they be truly free to serve Him in fullness and worship Him in truth and in spirit.

When Jesus sent his disciples on mission, while instructing them along the pathways of Judea, Luke 9:1-2 states, “he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.” The desire of The Awakening Church is to raise up disciples who continue to proclaim and demonstrate the kingdom of God with power and authority.

  • Deliverance Ministry.”
    No Such Thing as a “Deliverance Ministry.” Among the spiritual gifts listed in the New Testament, there was nothing that says Jesus established a ministry of exorcism. The Lord Jesus never, nor did the apostles, give instructions as how to look for demons in other believers or encourage them to seek their own lives and pray for the Lord to manifest any demon they may have in their life. What Jesus did give believers was the power of authority over demons, but did not say this would be the primary role of some believers to have a “deliverance ministry.” There is no such thing as a “Deliverance Ministry.” We must be very careful because there have been many people hurt by “deliverance ministries.” We should also not be surprised that many will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons. (1 Tim. 4:1) There is no example of believers delivering demons out of other believers. There is no mention that they should search for or ask the Lord to manifest demons that might be in their life. There was no “specializing” in one area of the ministry where a person could be elevated to a superior position of authority from the rest of the church. Our mission is to preach the gospel to get people saved, healed and delivered and become disciples of Christ. I can remember reading many years ago a book titled “Pigs in the Parlor.” From what I read, just about everything was a demon, had a name, and had to be cast out.
