Some of the discussion of priming in chapter four was also used in a conference paper, Behind the Camera: Priming the Spectator of Found Footage Horror, delivered at The Society for Cognitive Studies of the Moving Image in 2015. Sections on personal imagining also formed the basis of a conference paper, Personal Imagining and the Point-of-View Shot in Diegetic Camera Horror Films, delivered at The Society for Cognitive Studies of the Moving Image in 2017. Finally, significant amounts of Chapter 3 and Chapter 5 will be featured in two chapters of an upcoming edited collection on found footage horror films with the working title [Rec] Terror: Essays on Found Footage Horror Films. i Abstract The main research question underpinning this study asks why and how the diegetic camera technique has become so popular to both contemporary horror filmmakers and audiences. Genren piirteitä tutkitaan sekä teknisestä näkökulmasta että taiteellisen sisällön kannalta tarttuen tyylisuunnan sääntöihin ja niiden varaan rakennetun uskottavuuden välisiin, mahdollisiin paradokseihin. Tutkimuksessa keskitytään vahvasti found footage -äänikerrontaan, mutta ilmaisua käsitellään myös visu- aalisen maailman, käsikirjoituksen ja näyttelijäntyön kannalta. Dr. Defne Tüzün Nisan, 2017 Bu tez, işlediği cinayetlerin video kaydını alıp bu kayıtlarla kendi filmini çekmeye çalışan seri katil Max’in başkarakter olduğu The Last Horror Movie (Julian Richards, 2003) filmine odaklanıyor. Film, korku türüne ait başlıca konvansiyonlarını kullanmakla beraber “buluntu film” (found footage) biçimini de kullanıyor. Bu filmi benzerlerinden ayıran ve derinlikli bir incelemeye değer kılan ise “buluntu film” biçiminin farklı bir işlev üstlenerek kullanılmasında yatıyor. Bu çalışma öncelikle The Last Horror Movie filminin detaylı bir biçimsel analizini yaparak filmi, korku türü ve “buluntu film” modu açısından değerlendirir. Tez, bu filmin, korku türünün özelliklerini ve bahsedilen modun stratejilerini nasıl kullandığını ve hangi açılardan bu kalıplardan farklılaştığını inceler. Bu bağlamda tez, filmin anlatı ve üslup özellikleriyle “buluntu film” modunu araçsallaştırarak nasıl ve ne amaçla korku konvansiyonlarını baltaladığını araştırır. Filmin ana karakteri seri katil Max’in işlediği cinayetleri göstermekten çekinmesi, karanlığı bir korku unsuru olarak kullanmayı reddetmesi ve korku sahnelerine müdahale ederek ve bu sahneleri keserek izleyiciye uzun uzun açıklamalar yapması detaylı olarak ele alınır. Film, tüm bunları “buluntu film” modunun gerçeklik iddiasına dayanarak yapar. Böylece tez, filmin bu tür stratejilerle, korku türünün alışılagelmiş konvansiyonlarını yıkarak aslında daha da gerçekçi ve inandırıcı bir korku efekti yarattığını iddia eder.

The trailer is a viral phenomenon on YouTube and has garnered over 21 million views. The sequel focuses on film student Alex Wright, who is a fan of the first film and comes to believe that it may not just be a movie. It is done in a student-documentary style along the lines of Catfish, filmed from handicams, cell phones, web cams, etc. Alex is contacted online by a mysterious blogger with the screen name "Death Awaits 666", who links him to a strange video clip that appears to show Sean Rogerson - the lead actor from Grave Encounters - still alive and trapped in the building. Alex researches the real life whereabouts of Sean Rogerson and finds there is little information about him or any of the other cast or crew. Finally, Alex manages to track down Grave Encounters purported producer, Jerry Hartfeld, who reveals that the events of the film were in fact TRUE. Jerry took the doomed crew's footage and released it as a “found footage” style horror film he could exploit for profit. He settled out of court with the crew’s families and made them all sign non-disclosure agreements. Death Awaits 666 alerts Alex to the fact that the mental institution from Grave Encounters is actually only a few hours drive away from his campus.

Movies such as Cannibal Holocaust (1980), The Blair Witch Project (1999), Paranormal Activity (2007) and The Gallows (2015) capitalize on the blur between reality and fiction, interfering with the way part of the audience responds to the movies. The article also contends that found footage films are natural by-products of postmodern times, which is especially characterized by ‘convergence culture’ (JENKINS, 2008) and ‘the disappearance of something real’, as two prime features of this genre. Keywords: horror cinema; found footage; claims to truthfulness; factual genres; media. Resumo: Este artigo analisa como o design textual de filmes do formato found footage subverte o discurso factual a fim de potencializar a pretendida sensação de horror na tela. Filmes como Canibal Holocausto (1980), A Bruxa de Blair (1999), Atividade Paranormal (2007) e A Forca (2015) exploram a confusão entre realidade e ficção, interferindo na maneira como parte da audiência reage aos filmes. O artigo também parte do princípio que o found footage é um produto natural da pós- modernidade, que tem a cultura da convergência (JENKINS, 2008) e o desaparecimento do real como duas de suas maiores características.
