I N TH E FO OTSTEPS OF MERCHANT PRINCES

Southbank House has its origins in a time of opulence for wealthy cotton merchants as the shock waves of The Industrial Revolution reverberated around the world.

In 1861, Joseph Thompson, a cotton merchant employing over 600 people occupied the impressive residence with his wife Mary, their two children and servants. The quality, prestige and setting of his home reflected his status and standing in a period when Lancashire completely dominated the world market in textiles. A decade later Robert Jervis, another successful merchant, was master of Southbank, taking up residence with his wife Emily and four children.

The heritage and timeless appeal of this fine building has been carefully maintained and enhanced in a development that offers a range of opportunities and accommodation for today’s purchasers to experience the home comforts that attracted Manchester’s merchant princes to Bowdon in a bygone era.

6 7 Delamer Lodge was built after Southbank House but shares its high historic value as the grand building was constructed as part of the growing development of the area and retains most of its original form.

The 1881 census records that it was occupied by Thomas Briggs Somer, a ‘Gentleman’, along with his wife, their two children and servants. The impressive building evokes the name of Baron Delamer, later created First Earl of Warrington, who is commemorated in the parish church at Bowdon.

An appreciation of the heritage significance of both buildings has been at the heart of DeTrafford’s development plans – stipulating high quality improvements and sensitive restoration and repair of the original fabric. The character and appearance of the conservation reflects the rich legacy of the site, while the internal specification satisfies the exacting standards of today’s discerning buyer.
