She has received many honorable awards include Noble Prize for Literature and Booker Prize for her novel The Conservationist (1974), W.H. Smith Commonwealth Literary Award, James Tait Black Memorial Prize, Bennett Award and received many righteous degrees from various universities like Oxford and Cambridge. She belongs to the period of Apartheid in South Africa. Many of her stories deal with the issues of racial injustices, cultural clashes between Whites and Blacks, segregation, displacement, love, political power, alienation and the sufferings of Africans in the White lands. She has been called the leader of South African people. She expresses her views not only on African people in her novels but also criticizes the government policies and activities. Nadine Gordimer’s writing symbolizes that there is a need for political change. Because of protest, many of her novels are banned by the government. Being brave woman, she has never become tired. NAGARAJ Assistant Professor, Department of English and Foreign languages Bharathiar University, Coimbatore ,Tamil Nadu, ABSTRACT In Afrikaans the term ‘apartheid’ means ‘apartness’. This system of racial segregation brought by the Afrikaner National Party in 1948 was the culmination of the intense political situation experienced by South Africa for the last few centuries. The blacks were cornered into ‘homelands’ and left without a choice other than living in their own country like foreigners. Those who did not own a passport were deprived of even the limited liberty to enter the white inhabited area. When the world politics grew sophisticated in the second half of the twentieth century, the persisting savagery in South Africa caught world’s attention. More than historians and media it is the literature from the country that sent the exact colour of the picture across the border. KEYWORDS: Nadine Gordimer, Politics, Novels. Among the revolutionary writers emanated from apartheid, Nadine Gordimer has produced an oeuvre that is observed as an unofficial record of the South African history by her famous critic Stephen Clingman (13). Her literary career runs parallel to the apartheid and post apartheid era and she has nothing to transmit to the world other than the traumatic experiences of individuals under the regime. It is in this aspect she differs and elevates herself from the traditional historians. Hers is not a cold account of the sequence of events of history. -

Nadine Gordimer (Estate) Nadine Gordimer was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1991. She was the author of 15 novels, including THE LYING DAYS (her first novel, published in 1953), A GUEST OF HONOUR , THE CONSERVATIONIST, BURGER'S DAUGHTER, JULY'S PEOPLE and, in 2012, NO TIME LIKE THE PRESENT. Among her collections of short stories are SOMETHING OUT THERE, JUMP and BEETHOVEN WAS ONE-SIXTEENTH BLACK. In 2010 her collected stories and non-fiction were published as LIFE TIMES: STORIES 1952-2007 and TELLING TIMES: WRITING AND LIVING 1950-2008. Educated in South Africa, she had honorary fellowships at universities including Harvard, Yale and Leuven, and was awarded an Honorary Degree from Oxford University in 1994. Among her other numerous literary awards were the MLA, the Malaparte Prize from Italy, the Nelly Sachs Prize from Germany, the Scottish Arts Council's Neil Gunn Fellowship, the French International award, the Grand Aigle d'Or, the Benson medal from the Royal Society of Literature, the James Tait Black Memorial Prize, the Booker Prize (1974 joint winner), the CNA Literary Award and the National Arts Club Medal in New York. She died peacefully at home in Johannesburg on 13 July 2014 at the age of 90. By means of textual analysis, the study investigates how the representation of numerous female characters in these texts reflects on and reflects the sector of South African society that forms the social setting of each text. This thesis explores the portrayal of female characters in selected fictional works by examining the ways in which the novelists Mandla Langa, Zakes Mda (both of them black and male writers) and Nadine Gordimer (a white and female novelist) characterise women in novels depicting this adapting society. In scrutinising these texts of the transition period, the thesis writer employs detailed individual delineation of female characters, to some extent by means of a comparative approach, with emphasis on parallels between as well as differences among the abovementioned authors’ ways of describing South African women’s circumstances and responses to their social predicaments. -

Barker Department of English (Associate) UNISA E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Crossing lines: the novels of Nadine Gordimer with a particular focus on Occasion for loving and The pickup Novelist, playwright, short-story writer, polemicist and activist, Nadine Gordimer (1929), received the Nobel Prize for literature in 1991. She is an implacable opponent of apartheid, which she opposed through her imaginative writing as well as through essays and polemics. The end of apartheid was heralded by the release of Nelson Mandela in 1990, and officially ended with the first democratic elections that were held in April of 1994. Gor- dimer has produced fourteen novels to date: ten falling clearly within the apartheid period, and four novels that can be classi- fied as falling within the postapartheid period. There is evidence of several general and interrelated shifts in her novels since the demise of apartheid. The previous emphasis on the community and communal responsibility has to some extent been replaced by a relatively greater emphasis on the individual, that is, a move from a stress on public identity to private identity. Local, South African concerns are succeeded by more global con- cerns. Odette Blumenfeld PhD Student Cătălin Tecucianu Iași, 2014 1 For many decades Nadine Gordimer has been at the centre of South Africa‟s literary and socio-political developments. As a writer whose career covers over more than sixty years, from the beginning of apartheid until its demise and well into the post-apartheid period, Nadine Gordimer‟s fiction and non-fiction represent a history of the problems the South African nation has faced throughout these years. At its core, Gordimer always puts the theme of identity, so important to an internally compartmentalized society like South Africa, and weaves it with that of place, offered by the historical background. However, it is in the novels that Gordimer truly manages to bring to the fore the life of South Africans and create memorable landscapes in which the characters play out their existences. For Gordimer the novel occupies an especially important place among her writings and although she started her career as a short-story writer, she soon discovered that the novel gave more opportunities for exploration, more space for the action to develop and, equally important, more depth to the characters. Taking these aspects into account, in a succession of five chapters, this study of Nadine Gordimer‟s novels presents the themes of „identity‟ and „place‟ through a focus on the impact of physical and mental barriers (typical of South African society) in the characters‟ lives.
