The conference was organized through the University of California Extension Programs. The advisory committee consisted of Thomas Parkinson, Professor of English at U.C. Berkeley, Donald M. BEFORE COLUMBUS FOUNDATION PRESENTS THE AMERICAN BOOK AWARDS 2004 America was intended to be a place where freedom from discrimination was the means by which equality was achieved. Today, American culture THE is the most diverse ever on the face of this earth. Recognizing literary excel- lence demands a panoramic perspective. A narrow view strictly to the mainstream ignores all the tributaries that feed it. American literature is AMERICAN not one tradition but all traditions. From those who have been here for thousands of years to the most recent immigrants, we are all contributing to American culture. We are all being translated into a new language. BOOK Everyone should know by now that Columbus did not “discover” America. Rather, we are all still discovering America—and we must continue to do AWARDS so. The Before Columbus Foundation was founded in 1976 as a nonprofit educational and service organization dedicated to the promotion and dissemination of contemporary American multicultural literature. The goals of BCF are to provide recognition and a wider audience for the wealth of cultural and ethnic diversity that constitutes American writing. BCF has always employed the term “multicultural” not as a description of an aspect of American literature, but as a definition of all American litera- ture. BCF believes that the ingredients of America’s so-called “melting pot” are not only distinct, but integral to the unique constitution of American Culture—the whole comprises the parts. In 1978, the Board of Directors of BCF (authors, editors, and publishers representing the multicultural diversity of American Literature) decided that one of its programs should be a book award that would, for the first time, respect and honor excellence in American literature without restric- tion or bias with regard to race, sex, creed, cultural origin, size of press or ad budget, or even genre. -

York University Graduate Program in English Post-1900 US Literature Comprehensive Reading List [Updated MarCh 2007] Candidates should submit a reading list composed of the following texts. Where indicated, students may substitute another appropriate text by the same author. Additionally, up to 10% of each section of this list may be replaced with alternatives decided upon by the candidate in consultation with the examination supervisor. Note well: In addition to mastering the list provided below, candidates in twentieth-century American literature are expected to develop a familiarity with a range of major American literary texts from before the 20th century. Ideally, candidates planning to specialize as Americanists will sit the pre-1900 American Literature exam and the twentieth-century American Literature exam. Candidates who opt not to take the earlier American exam should refer to that exam’s reading list in consultation with their supervisor to determine which American authors/texts from before 1900 are unavoidable prerequisites for this field exam. Likely possibilities include: Mark Twain, Herman Melville, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Emily Dickinson, Walt Whitman, Ralph Waldo Emerson, etc. Candidates will not be examined on these materials as part of this field, but exam questions may take for granted knowledge of such fundamental texts. If this will be a second field exam, students are required to submit a copy of their first field examination reading list along with the final copy of the 20th century American list. Prose Candidates should read texts by approximately 10-15 authors from each time period below, selected in consultation with their supervisors. A total of approximately 45-55 prose texts by as many authors is appropriate. -

According to his close friend, the poet David Lehman, “Ammons published Ommateum, his first book, at his own expense in 1955; sixteen copies were sold in the next five years.” A very fine copy, essentially as new. $2,500.00 2. [ARCHIVES & COLLECTIONS] Bisbee Poetry Festival Archive (1979-1985). In 1979, Jon Friedman founded the annual Bisbee Poetry Festival in the historic mining town of Bisbee, AZ, a picturesque town on the Mexican border that had become a vibrant center of creative activity for musicians, writers, and artists. Every year for the next seven years Friedman invited six of the best contemporary poets to Bisbee during the third week of August to read their poetry to audiences that usually exceeded 500 avid fans from around the country. The readings, which might more accurately be described as performances, varied from an hour to an hour and a half, and these readings, along with the interviews, workshops, press conferences and informal social events that surrounded the readings, were all professionally videotaped, thereby capturing some of the most riveting live poetry readings of the period, readings that, it must be emphasized, were enhanced by their non-academic environment. -

ka mate ka ora: a new zealand journal of poetry and poetics Issue 11 March 2012 Two Women Poets: Helen Adam and Bub Bridger Jan Pilditch It is a truism of feminist literary criticism, most especially of the nineteenth century, that women’s poetry took place in the private, and often domestic, sphere. In the occidental contexts of this essay, poetry was the province of men. In the twentieth century, however, western women poets emerged, such as Edith Sitwell or Anna Wickham, who rejected the idea of a private poetry in favour of performance and a public poetry. As a new intellectual climate grew in the aftermath of World War II, performance by women poets became more common, and in 1947 Madeline Gleason organised the Festival of Modern Poetry at Lucien Labaudt Gallery, Gough Street, San Francisco. This was one of the first public presentations of poetry as a performance-oriented art form. Performance continued to grow, especially through the “Happenings” associated with the emancipation of culture and art, but this did not entirely bring women’s poetry into the public sphere. Riemke Ensing, in her introduction to the 1977 Private Gardens: An Anthology of New Zealand Women Poets, comments on the disturbing similarities of experience of the poets represented in the anthology: “problems which had to do with the condition of being a woman—of being a wife and mother first, a poet second” (11). Performance continued to bring some women poets popularity and even acclamation during their lifetimes; but despite this, performance, though sometimes commented upon, is rarely considered as integral to the art of the women poets whose practice it was to perform. -
