INTRODUCTION The annual apple production of the world bas in­ creased immensely during the last two decades and parallelled With this there bas been an increase in the number and complexity of chemical treatments to combat the various pests attacking this fruit. Spraying is now an accepted, though not welcome, practice and it is be­ coming increasingly evident that the desired control can not be attained at this time through the use of chemicals alone. Arthropod pests "resistant" to chemicals have been observed in numerous instances. Suppression of one pest only to allow another to increase is a common re­ sult of disturbing nature's natural balance. Largely for these reasons no chemical bas adequately controlled any pest for a long period of time. These principles were known long before post World War II discoveries of more powerful insecticides but even with these recent Wide spectrum chemicals the insects and related arthropods still survive and cause heavy lasses each year. Entomologists in various parts of the world are be­ coming increasingly aware of the value of natural and biological agents in insect control. There are many examples of biological control in which the controlling agents have been introduced by man. This type of - 2 - cont~ol is very stmilar to controle effected when native biological control agents are manipulated tbrough the selected use of spray chemicals as well as other cultural practices. Apple growers in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia have been utilizing auch an integrated pro­ gram with succesa for the past 15 years. This modified or integrated p~ogram is the result of ecological investigations on the rauna of apple or­ ehards and the determination or the influence or chemieal sprays on the interactions of pesta and benericial arth­ ropods. This study, initiated about 1945 (Pickett !! !!•, 1946), bas been carried on by the staff or the Entomology Section of the Research Station, Canada DepartMent or Agriculture, Kentville, Nova Scotia. As a part or these investigations the writer bas studied the lite histories and habits of the predacious Miridae round on apple trees. This group constitutes a large portion of the total pre­ date~ complex. The p~edacious mirid Hyaliodes harti Knight was the tirst species to be studied in detail because of its tm­ portance as a predato~ of noxioùs orchard inseets. This importance has been 1nd1cated by the observations ot workers in Nova Scotia (Gilliatt, 1935; Lord, 1949;

The three forest types surveyed included a red pine woodlot, a red pine- white pine woodlot and an oak-hickory woodlot. Bach woodlot was approximately ten acres in size. The woodlots studied are located in the Kellogg Forest, Kalamazoo County, Michigan. They were surveyed, using the same methods in each, from June 20 to August 19, 1951. and from April 30 to June 19, 1955. ' collecting of the insects was done mainly by sweeping the herbs, shrubs, and lower tree strata with a thirty-centimeter insect net. other insects were taken after direct observation. In addi- tion, night collecting was done by using automobile headlights as attractants from various locations on logging roads throughout each area. An attempt was ends to collect as many insects as possible from each woodlot. Due to the nunbers involved and the fact that the surveys did not cover an entire year, the insects collected represent only a sample of the woodlot insect commities. Of the animals collected, only adult or identifiable imature forms of insects were recorded.

Two egg parasitoids, Oligosita spp.(Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) and a unidentified mymarid (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae), the predators, green lace wing, Chrysoperla rufilabris (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) and a predaceous mirid, possibly, Hyaliodes vitripennis (Heteroptera: Miridae). Both the green lace wing and the predaceous mirid, caused at least 30% reduction of nymphs and eggs. During 1996-1998 the egg parasitoid Oligosita spp., was the most frequent during the first major peak of P. perseae. However, recent surveys conducted between 2005 and 2007 suggest that the mymarid, Erythmelus spp., might be more important than Oligosita spp. Besides these parasitoids, the current predators, Paracarniella cubana (Heteroptera: Miridae), Sthetoconus praefectus (Heteroptera: Miridae) and a new genus and undescribed species of Cecidomyiidae appear to be the major predators of this pest. In other countries where P. perseae has been found, i.e., Cuba, Dominican Republic, there has not been any reports of parasitoids of this lace bug.     WORLDWIDE INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT OF THE IMPACTS OF SYSTEMIC PESTICIDES ON BIODIVERSITY AND ECOSYSTEMS http://www.tfsp.info/assets/WIA_2015.pdf Report in brief The Task Force on Systemic Pesticides is an independent group of scientists from all over the globe, who came together to work on the Worldwide Integrated Assessment of the Impact of Systemic Pesticides on Biodiversity and Ecosystems. The mandate of the Task Force on Systemic Pesticides (TFSP) has been “to carry out a comprehensive, objective, scientific review and assessment of the impact of systemic pesticides on biodiversity, and on the basis of the results of this review to make any recommendations that might be needed with regard to risk management procedures, governmental approval of new pesticides, and any other relevant issues that should be brought to the attention of decision makers, policy developers and society in general” (see appendix 2). The Task Force has adopted a science-based approach and aims to promote better informed, evidence-based, decision-making. The method followed is Integrated Assessment (IA) which aims to provide policy-relevant but not policy-prescriptive information on key aspects of the issue at hand. To this end a highly multidisciplinary team of 30 scientists from all over the globe jointly made a synthesis of 1,121 published peer-reviewed studies spanning the last five years, including industry-sponsored ones. All publications of the TFSP have been subject to the standard scientific peer review procedures of the journal (http://www.springer.com/environment/journal/11356). Key findings of the Task Force have been presented in a special issue of the peer reviewed Springer journal “Environmental Science and Pollution Research” entitled “Worldwide Integrated Assessment of the Impacts of Systemic Pesticides on Biodiversity and Ecosystems” and consists of eight scientific papers, reproduced here with permission of Springer.

Sieber September 2020 Copyright © Miranda Galey 2020 Abstract Bat fecal samples are a rich source of ecological data for bat biologists, entomologists, and microbiologists. Feces collected from individual bats can be used to profile the gut microbiome using microbial DNA and to understand bat foraging strategies using arthropod DNA. We used eDNA collected from bat fecal samples to better understand bats as predators in the context of their unique gut physiology. We used high through- put sequencing of the COI gene and 16S rRNA gene to determine the diet composition and gut microbiome composition of three bat species in Minnesota: Eptesicus fuscus, Myotis lucifugus and M. septentrionalis. In our analysis of insect prey, we found that E. fuscus consistently foraged for a higher diversity of beetle species compared to other insects. We found that the proportional frequency of tympanate samples from M. septentrionalis and M. lucifugus was similar, while M. septentrionalis consistently preyed more often upon non-flying species. We used the same set of COI sequences to determine presence of pest species, rare species, and insects not previously observed in Minnesota. We were able to combine precise arthropod identification and the for- aging areas of individually sampled bats to observe possible range expansion of some insects. The taxonomic composition of the bat gut microbiome in all three species was found to be consistent with the composition of a mammalian small intestine.

Redacted for Privacy Abstract approved: /- Documentation of the side effects of pesticides on arthropod natural enemies has expanded rapidly since the 1950's as part of an increase in non-target side effects literature. Most reviews have been based on empirical analysis of selected literature. The SELCTV database was developed to make a larger information base accessible for characterization and analysis. The feasibility of such a database is a function of improving microcomputer technology and database management software. Record structure and scope of the SELCTV database included 40 information fields covering natural enemy biology, pesticide chemistry, toxicology and literature citations. SELCTV was assembled from over 900 published papers, believed to constitute 80-90% of available literature through the early 1980's. Currently, some 12,600 records contain taxonomic, biological, toxicological, reference and summary information for over 600 species of natural enemies in 88 families. Research was conducted in 58 countries around the world and included predators and parasitoids associated with 60 agricultural commodities. All major classes of pesticides are represented,including microbial insecticides. The impact of over 400 agricultural chemicals on natural enemies by means of one of ten basic test types has been distilledinto SELCTV. Many different types of natural enemy responses were reported in the literature. In addition to recording these as documented, measurements were translated to a scale ranging from 1(0% effect) to 5 (90-100% effect).
