Badenoch and Strathspey Community Transport Company Newsletter March 2021 1 A message from Maggie to keep you up to date with what the Community Transport Company is currently doing. Hello everyone I hope you are all well and enjoying some of the nice spring weather we have been having. Things at “Where2Today” continue to operate although albeit a little differently. So, I just wanted to give you some news both about what we have been doing and what we are working towards. During both lockdowns the office has been open and working with a skeleton staff at base with a couple of people working from home, to minimise the risks. Social Activities: Whilst most of these have been on hold, the ‘fish & chip’ run is still going great guns, along with phone calls, planting seeds and putting packs together. The Car Scheme: as you know has not been operating, but we hope to resume our service very soon, now that restrictions are lifting a little. Preparations are being made, so we hope you will bear with us. We have missed you all so much and we know the clients have too! Vaccination Rollout: many of the clients and volunteers have had their 2nd vaccine now, which is wonderful news. This gives people more confidence in the fact they are protected and unlikely to become infected with the virus. The excitement from our clients about having the vaccine and being keen to get out and about again has been lovely to hear. Minibus Service: over the last year the company has mainly been covering the areas from Boat of Garten to Newtonmore, as each community in Strathspey has been doing its own services for people shielding. Where2Today has been using our minibus service to collect and deliver shopping; deliver food boxes and prescriptions for people. This has been a huge support to those folks who have been shielding or unable to get out. The community spirit over the past year has just been amazing with people talking more to their neighbours, young people who are furloughed getting involved along with new ways of working being developed . Befriending : our team have continued to have weekly telephone contact with their Befriendees. With lockdown soon easing, it will hopefully mean a return to meeting in coffee shops along with going for walks as soon as people feel more confident about going out. 2 A friendly chat goes a long way Thursday shopping deliveries for Kingussie & Newtonmore clients. Over 200 deliveries made by Where2Today during lockdown Thumbs up from Valerie after receiving her first vaccine at the Aviemore Medical Practice We know that things will never feel the same as before, but I think we have learned a lot about peoples’ needs over this time, through the huge number of telephone calls which have been made both by staff and our wonderful volunteers. Without that support, a lot of people may have had no contact whatsoever. We want to see you all again and we want to hear what you would like to do to help us, per haps things have changed in your life and you have learned new skills which you can transfer to someone else. Let us know, as we are hearing stories from so many people who have been learning to do gardening, knitting, art, photography etc. These could be ideas for us to set up little social groups, so don’t keep it a secret! Social inclusion and outdoor health are two things we will definitely be concentrating on for the future. Looking forward to hearing from you all! Take care everyone Maggie Lawson 3 The Badenoch & Strathspey Community Transport Company Allotment A NEW YEAR and A NEW PROJECT. If there is one thing we have learnt from this year of lockdown, is that being outside in the fresh air is the best tonic. To this end, we here at BSCTC, decided to take this seriously by trying to get a project running that will do just that, help people get outside. So WELCOME to the allotment. Now, I am not much of a gardener but even I can feel the benefits of working on the allotment getting it started. The layout fits us perfectly, with 6 raised beds already in place and a plot to dig and plant vegetables. With two keen volunteers, the work began in digging over the soil in the beds and having a general tidy up. The weather has been good to us so far, enabling the earth to be turned, weeds to be taken out and even the transplanting of the existing raspberry canes. We hope to create raised beds with wild flowers, fruit and herbs, along with growing vegetables in the plot. There has even been talk of getting a shed. The site has lots of potential and can be bathed in sunshine which will be fabulous now that spring is in the air. “Oh to be in the sun and fresh air To watch the flowers grow Spend some time with good company Then to the allotment I must go” SUNFLOWER GROWING CHALLENGE To celebrate Plant and Share Month - 19th April to 19th May, We are holding a competition to see who can grow the tallest SUNFLOWERS. If you would like to take part, just give Victoria a call and she will get you started. 4 Can you help our new project? To help our allotment grow, if anyone has any gardening equipment that they no longer use, bits of wood, netting, sticks, garden bench even, then perhaps it could be donated to the BSCTC. Anything will be considered. Just telephone the office to let Dorothy know and we can sort out the logistics. IF you would like to volunteer to work on the Allotment, grow some seeds on your window sill, or just come by for a visit; give us a call. Introducing the new kid on the block Hello, I’m Gordon Gilfillan and took up my role as Community Engagement Officer with Badenoch and Strathspey Community Transport Company on 8th January 2021 and absolutely love being part of such a great team. As we’re in lockdown, I have been spending most of my time on the phone and on zoom meetings getting to know many of our clients, volunteers, partners, other charities and third sector organisations. I am very much looking forward to the coming weeks and months when lockdown starts to lift and I can get out into our community and start meeting people face to face. I was born in Glasgow, but was fortunate enough that my family always had a holiday house in Aviemore. From when I was 2 we spent every weekend, every school holiday and every other spare moment in Aviemore. By the time I was 12 in 1991, my mum Maggie Gilfillan, had decided that it just made sense to move to Aviemore permanently and it has been my home ever since. I now live in Dalfaber with my wife, 2 young children and dog. When I’m not busy at work, I love walking, cycling and playing outdoors with my kids. At the end of a busy day when the kids are asleep, there’s nothing I like more than relaxing on the couch with the fire burning and watching a good movie. This is my first job in the charity sector having spent the rest of my career in law, retail and the oil industry. Working for a charity is very different and there’s a lot to learn but I’m enjoying the journey. Best wishes Gordie 5 GRANTOWN SHOPPING PROJECT During lockdown, the Grantown Initiative was set up to help with shopping and the food delivery to those that were isolating. This is now coming to a close so BSCTC have been asked to take the project on. Usually run on a Tuesday, it will entail, doing someone’s shopping and then helping to deliver it in Grantown. Final plans have still to be ironed out, but the one thing that will be needed, is Volunteers to do the shopping. If you would like to help, then please get in touch on the office number 01479 810004 Hello EVERYONE On January 18th 2021, much to my own amazement, I started a new role within BSCTC as the Volunteer Recruitment Officer. Having worked in the voluntary sector for many years, it is going to be great working again with Maggie and Dorothy, as well as getting to know my new colleagues, Donna, Gordie, Julie and Derek. Having arrived in Aviemore in 1988, for what I thought was going to be a winter job, I now find myself happily living in Carrbridge and spend my time, when not working, roaming our glorious hills and swimming in the luscious lochs. Mind you, as anyone will tell you, my favourite place to be, is, with my book in hand, in or outside in the sunshine preferably, a cafe having a coffee and chatting to everyone I meet. Mind you, the allotment is becoming a close second. The best part of my role though, will be getting to know all the wonderful volunteers that are such a vital part of our organisation. Some of you will already know me through my association with the company over the years, whilst others I am very much looking forward to meeting. So when Covid restrictions allow and we have the possibility of gathering, meeting and socialising once more, you can call me or email me to have a chat or catch up with what is new in the BSCTC.
