HOLY FAMILY March 24,2013 HOLY WEEK: THE WEEK OF SALVATION

GLORY TO !

Great and Holy Week begins this Palm Sunday, March 24. This week is called “great” because this is the week when the central events of our salvation are commemorated. The suffering, death and resurrection of the Lord are remembered and the Church comes together in worship and prayer to celebrate the extreme lov- ing kindness of our God. This week is called “holy” because the Christ, the Holy One of God acts for our good and our salvation to make us holy, a sacred and unique people who are adopted as sons and daughters of God.

On Monday of Holy Week, March 25, Confessions will be heard from 6:30pm to 7:30pm

On Great and Holy Wednesday, March 27, the Church remembers the anointing of the Lord at Bethany by the sinful woman in preparation for his burial and the betrayal of the Lord by Judas. This sinful woman, not the kind of woman who would have attended Temple, nor would she find herself welcomed in the church, un- derstands Christ in a way that Judas does not, for he is in the lesson plotting to betray Christ. Judas is seeking to make money by betraying Christ; the woman is giving her money to honor the Lord. She under- stands the love she has freely received from Christ. The Sacrament of Anointing is offered tonight for the healing of soul and body and for forgiveness of sins. (It is a good thing to go to Confession before receiving the Sacrament of Anointing.) At the conclusion of the Service, we are anointed with oil, and the grace of God, which heals infirmities of soul and body, is called down upon each person. As Christ was anointed in prepa- ration for his burial so we are anointed as we prepare to celebrate the events which heal and bring us God’s forgiveness. The Service is at 6:30pm in the church.

On Great and Holy Thursday, March 28, the Church commemorates the giving of the gift of the Holy Eucharist and the washing of the feet of the Apostles by the Lord. The foot washing reminds us that the Lord, through who all things were created, whose throne is in heaven bows down like a servant to wash the feet of those he created and give all Christians an example of humility. The Savior gives his body and blood to his Church as food as on the cross he gives his body and blood for the salvation and reconciliation of the world. Those who are already baptized and have prepared to enter the fullness of the faith in the Catholic Church are confirmed and given the body and blood of the Lord for the first time.

After the Liturgy the body and blood of the Lord are taken from the church to the small chapel and reserved there for Holy Communion on Good Friday. The faithful are invited to pray before the Holy Gifts as the Lord invited the Apostles in Gethsemane during his agony “Stay here and keep watch with me.” (Mt 26:38). The Liturgy begins at 7:00pm in the church.

On Great and Holy Friday, March 29, we remember the suffering and death of our Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ. We hear the passion of the Lord proclaimed in the Holy Gospel. We pray the solemn prayers for the whole world, the Church and the needs of all people. We come before the cross of the Lord to vener- ate it with signs of love and devotion, for by the cross, joy has come into the whole world. We come before the altar of the Lord’s sacrifice to partake of the body and blood of Christ so our hunger and thirst for the life he gives us might be satisfied and we may be healed. The Liturgy is at 7:00 PM in the Church.

PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD

The Church is open all day, from noon to three, the Passion Gospels will be read with prayers.

On this day, we also commemorate the burial of the Lord, with the procession to the tomb, the placing of the shroud in the tomb and veneration of the shroud. All are invited to bring flowers to place at the tomb. The Service is at 10:30pm in the church.

On Great and Holy Saturday, March 30, the Church keeps memory of the descent of the Lord to the dead. In this time when the Lord’s body was in the tomb, his soul went to visit the souls of Adam and Eve and all the just ones who awaited his coming. He frees them from the place of waiting in anticipation of his resurrec- tion. A short Service will be offered at 10:00am in the Church.

The Great Vigil of the Lord’s Passover. As night falls the Church gathers in darkness to celebrate the Great Vigil of the Resurrection. The new fire is blessed and Christ who scatters the darkness of sin and death is acclaimed as our risen God. We hear the accounts of how God saved his people in the Old Testament as a gift of hope and promise even before the Lord’s coming. We hear the joyful news of the Gospel of the Res- urrection, “Why do you seek the living one among the dead, he is not here, he is risen!” (Mt. 28:6) The wa- ters of Baptism are blessed, new Christians are born from the font, and they are confirmed and with all of us, partake of the risen body and blood of the Lord for the first time. This is the feast of all feasts, the greatest day of the year on which Christ rose from the grave destroying death by His death and giving life to all. Let us rejoice and be glad in it! Everyone is invited to Kirk Hall for a reception to welcome the new members into the Church. All are invited to bring a basket of the foods that you will be sharing during your Easter celebration at home. These will be blessed after Mass. The Vigil begins at 8:30pm in front of the church.

Easter Sunday, March 31, the Church continues to celebrate the Lord’s resurrection with Liturgy at 10:00am. (Please note that the 5:30pm Mass on Saturday and the 8:30am Mass on Sunday are not cele- brated.)

Christ is risen! He is truly risen!
